Cut To The Chase: The entire discernment series (David Platt, Beth Moore, Joyce Meyer, Jackie Hill Perry, Lori Alexander, Jen Wilkin, Priscilla Shirer)

By Elizabeth Prata

Last week I wrote a series on discernment in 6 essays. They are below. I called it “Wolf Week” because false teachers are called wolves in scripture. My own version of Shark Week, lol.

Wolf Week Intro: or, We DO know the heart
Wolf Week # 1: My two “starter false teachers”
Wolf Week # 2: Why Wolves?
Wolf Week # 3: Types of false teachers and their different methods
Wolf Week # 4: Has that false teacher REALLY ‘helped’ you?
Wolf Week # 5: Why does God allow false teachers?

A short follow-up series I am publishing contains 5 more essays in short form focusing on 4 influential ‘Bible’ teachers. I have written discernment essays on these four previously in years past, but those essays were longer. Nowadays however, people like to read less lengthy material. So I cut to the chase and made shorter essays showing why these folks are false.

Here they all are in one place:

Cut to the Chase: Priscilla Shirer

Cut to the Chase: Jen Wilkin

Cut to the chase: Six Reasons why Joyce Meyer is a false teacher

Cut to the chase: Five reasons to avoid Jackie Hill Perry

Cut to the chase: Four reasons to avoid Lori Alexander of godlywomanhood

Cut to the chase: Six reasons why you should avoid Beth Moore

Cut to the chase: Five reasons to avoid Jackie Hill Perry

A short follow-up series I am publishing contains 4 more essays in short form focusing on 4 influential ‘Bible’ teachers. I have written discernment essays on these four previously in years past, but those essays were longer. Nowadays however, people like to read less lengthy material. So I cut to the chase and made shorter essays showing why these folks are false.

Today I look at 5 reasons not to follow Jackie Hill Perry.

Jackie Hill Perry (JHP) is an author, spoken word artist, poet, and speaker. She was saved, she said, in 2008. Until that point, Jackie had indulged in all manner of sins, including long-term lesbianism.

Issue # 1- Direct Revelation

Jackie’s manner of conversion began with a voice from God. As an aside, many of the false teachers I warn you about claim either as part of their conversion story or part of their foundation of their ministry, a voice from ‘God’.

In Jackie’s case when she was an active lesbian, she said that despite knowing the scripture for ‘the wages of sin is death’, apparently the biblical statement was not enough for her to repent of her perversity. It wasn’t until she heard the Lord speaking directly to her that she believed. Source and Source. And notice the displacement of the core issue. Jackie said she ‘heard’ the Lord say of her girlfriend, “She will be the death of you” and Jackie said, ‘then things clicked.’ Emphasis mine

No. SIN is the death of us. In JHP’s case, her lesbianism. The girlfriend isn’t the problem, choosing sin and indulging in it is the problem.

Issue # 2: Lack of Discernment

After her stated conversion in 2018, Jackie Hill Perry was seen as solid enough (by some) to be invited to appear in the American Gospel film, which combatted word-faith doctrine and prosperity gospel. But in 2022, JHP renounced her participation in AG film, saying she wished she had never been featured in it. She said it was “too tribalistic” whatever THAT means; and reeked of “theological superiority”.

As a side note: true doctrine IS superior to false to half-true doctrine. The Bible commands us to separate from liars, the greedy, false teachers, and so on. Jackie became unwilling to set doctrinal boundaries and separate. See the following-

In 2019, Jackie Hill Perry was invited from the upcoming Answers in Genesis Conference where she had been slated to speak. That is a pretty big deal, because not many other ministries have been consistently faithful and biblical over decades. It spoke volumes.

Then she was disinvited. Her disinvite followed on the heels of a controversy after Perry publicly endorsed Jenn Johnson of Bethel Church, who is a heretic and her organization is a heresy factory. No wonder Answers in Genesis said, ‘no thanks’ to JHP’s participation in their conference. The disinvite from a credible ministry like AiG spoke volumes, yet it did nothing to prompt JHP to reconsider her endorsement of Jenn Johnson, at least publicly. In fact, JHP doubled down. She later defended her endorsement of Jenn Johnson of Bethel by claiming that Word-Faith theology isn’t ‘actual heresy’. These were Jackie’s own words. Jackie’s unwillingness to separate shows her to be a man-pleaser.

Issue # 3: Reverse racism

In 2020 in an episode of her show “With the Perry’s” she said many woke things, including that “all white people” must look within themselves to search out the deceitfulness in their hearts over their inherent racism and reject the notion that, “all white people” have bought into the narrative that all black people are criminals. Source.

Issue # 4: Usurper

JHP preaches. Here she is at Liberty University in April 2024 preaching at the convocation where men are present. Here she is in 2023 preaching at the Passion Conference, where men are present. Other examples abound. You cannot listen in good faith to a ‘Bible’ teacher or preacher who openly and brazenly rebels against the very scriptures they purport to uphold.

Issue # 5: She is a Prideful ‘prophet’

In 2022, Jackie came out as a prophet. See again, direct revelation. She quotes what God has allegedly said, and claims that ‘God’ has allegedly given Jackie information about other people, for whom she then intercedes. God had told her she’d have a boy. She didn’t. She had a girl.

The canon is closed. God is not speaking directly or individually to people today, giving inside information. The ‘voice’ Jackie says she is hearing is not God’s. She is either lying, massively deceived, or mentally incompetent.

I wrote two previous pieces on JHP:

Jackie Hill Perry: Discernment review

Jackie Hill Perry comes out as ‘prophet’

The size of a ministry isn’t an indicator of their standing with God or the credibility of their organization. In fact, the larger and more popular a so-called ministry is the more we should be suspicious of it. In Luke 6:26 we read, ‘Woe to you when all the people speak well of you; for their fathers used to treat the false prophets the same way.

Avoid Jackie Hill Perry. She is false.

Discernment: Women on the ‘Speaking circuit’- example, Jackie Hill Perry

By Elizabeth Prata

Jackie Hill Perry Partnering with Bill Johnson at Bethel Music School

Woman are biblically urged to be at home, tend to their home, abide in their home, and perform duties oriented to the home. Are you getting the idea? The Proverbs 31 woman did all she did FOR the home, which is biblically her sphere.

1 Timothy 5:14, Titus 2:5, Proverbs 14:1 are just a few of the verses that outline a woman’s sphere.

That’s not to say that the husband and the wife may make other decisions based on certain circumstances. That’s not to say that at certain times it may require a woman to be away from the home for work or other reasons. I am not setting a mandate.

The Bible however, does make some clear statements that a wife’s primary orientation circulates around the home- especially when she has children. It should be her priority. This isn’t a popular statement these days.

In 2016 at the height of popularity for Joanna Gaines of Magnolia Enterprises, I wrote that she was a hypocrite and a liar. Joanna constantly claimed in interviews and on her TV program “Fixer Upper” that she was a mom first and her children were her priority. I showed with facts that this was not true. Her orientation was for herself according to her own “testimony”, her enterprises, her books, her speaking, her TV program, her bakery, her furniture store, her design products, her book tour, and so on. I received a LOT of heat for saying this. But I mean, you could even SEE it on the TV show. Facts are facts.

Don’t only listen to what they say. Watch what they do. Both must match up.

Jackie Hill Perry at the Activate 2019 conference with other speakers

I took heat for saying that Beth Moore was also a hypocrite and a liar for the same reason- not there for her kids. Beth’s public speaking engagements, IRS tax return statements of working 50 hours a week as President of her corporation, her own admissions in her blog writing of travels for writing, book tours, and television taping added up to a busy career women. Her lifestyle contradicted her claim that she was at home for her kids. Eventually, a few years later when her two daughters were grown they admitted in an interview that mom was gone a lot, dad picked up the slack, and they “ate a lot of takeout.” The interviewer also said of Moore, “Her days are tightly scheduled and obsessively focused on writing. She spends hours alone in an office…”

Propel Activate women’s conference 2019 tagline. We are not called to lead, nor step out

She is boisterous and rebellious, Her feet do not dwell at home; (Proverbs 7:11)

Speaking of hypocrites, when Diana Stone was writing for She Reads Truth, we read in Diana Stone’s bio that, “You can find her in the mornings with a cup of coffee and her Bible flung open, preparing for the day ahead.” And “With a sweet daughter in tow, Diana clings to God’s Word daily.” It turns out that Mrs Stone relaxes with the Bible “flung open” … after she drops her daughter to daycare. At the time of that writing, in 2014, the couple had employed a part time nanny to care for their daughter in their home so Mrs Stone could work as a freelance writer. After bumping along with several nannies, they put their child in daycare so Mrs Stone could continue to write at home. So yes, she was at home…while a day care worker took care of her kid.

Don’t only listen to what they say. Watch what they do. It must match up.

It is impossible for a woman to claim undivided attention for the children at home AND have an outside the house career, especially when it’s evident by reading their blogs, seeing their speaking schedules, and just having common sense to see their lifestyle.

When a woman has a full-time “ministry,” AKA career, it means the children will suffer a lack of attention from the mom. Which brings us to another career woman, Jackie Hill Perry. One of the main indicators of whether a woman is genuinely converted and submitted to the word of God is seeing her home life. Where is her attention? If she is a mother, do her children come first? Did she submit to the word of God as per her role and let go other entanglements? Or is she using the word “ministry” as a synonym for career and living a lifestyle at odds with the word of God?

In Jackie’s case, she has four children under the age of 10. To the best of my research, her kids are currently 9, 6, 3, and 2. Unlike Joanna, Beth, and Diana, Priscilla; Jackie hasn’t to my knowledge claimed to be an at-home mom. She is proud of her kids and writes of them often, but doesn’t try to maintain a fiction of being a SAHM.

At Jackie’s website her speaking engagements for 2023 were listed. It looked like a busy year of travel away from her children for this mom of four.

2023:
March 10-11. New Orleans, LA.
March 17-18. Atlanta (Decatur), GA.
April 14-15. Kansas City, MO.
April 21-22. Philadelphia, PA.
August 18-19. Greensboro, NC.
September 8-9. Grand Rapids (Wyoming), MI.
September 22-23. Dallas, TX.
September 29-30. Sacramento, CA
October 27-28. Knoxville TN

Jackie’s speaking engagements in 2024, many of which require travel, are below. The list is INCOMPLETE, these are just the ones I could find individually searching. JHP’s speaking event page on her website isn’t updated for 2024 yet.

January 10: podcast interview
February 23-24: Philadelphia PA
February 23: Canada (online)
March 1-2: Ft Worth TX
April 12-13: Bluefield W.VA
July 10-19: Bethel, Redding CA (It’s a 10-day event, I do not know which day or all of the days JHP is appearing there).

I wrote yesterday about JHP’s trajectory away from orthodoxy and that in many people’s estimation (mine included) partnering with heretic Bill Johnson AT Bethel to teach at their music school crossed the line.

Jackie Hill Perry claims to hear directly from God, basks with heretics, refuses wise counsel, rejects correction, and calls setting doctrinal boundaries ‘tribalism.’ But add to the cadre of items to be reviewed when assessing an influencer or teacher, is her home life.

I think it is QUITE telling when a mom of children gallivants all around the country for speaking engagements, leaving the care of her children to someone else (OR dragging them with her like Shirer did) in order to curate her own career. Oh, they call it “ministry”, they call it “using their God-given gifts”, but it’s a career. When you have kids, according to God, your ministry IS the kids. A woman’s priority according to the word of God, should be at home with them, raising them, keeping the home.

If a wife/mom won’t submit to the priority of God in this instance, what else of God does she rebel against?

Jackie Hill Perry is false. Avoid her.

Jackie Hill Perry partnering at Bethel with Bill Johnson (this is BAD)

By Elizabeth Prata

I’ve written about poetic speaking artist, former lesbian, self-identified Christian Jackie Hill Perry (JHP) before. Negatively. And positively. But at all times had asked readers and followers of JHP to use caution.

Jackie Hill Perry performs jig-a-boo, about not tolerating false teachers, (ironic now that she’s doing that exact thing).

We often feel such joy when a fellow member of the human race converts in faith by grace of God to His kingdom. If that person has a “platform” then all the better, some believe, because the person can use it for the glory of God. Unfortunately, we often rush to put the person up on their platform, or other platforms, forgetting to use patience and wisdom to see if their conversion is genuine.

Paul warned Timothy when explaining qualifications for pastors, that he must not be a recent convert lest he become puffed up with pride, conceit, and fall into the devil’s snare. (1 Timothy 3:6). The same concept can be applied to any new convert who is thrust into leadership before they are ready.

Preaching at UYWI National Conference Aug 21, 2019

Jackie wasn’t ready.

Spencer Smith on JHP began his latest video on JHP this way:

Here is a timeline of JHP’s biography as an adult starting with conversion:

2008: JHP renounces lesbianism and converts to Christianity. She’d heard the Lord speak to her. She said- “I repented of my sins that day in my bedroom, believing that Jesus was simply better.” (Better than what?)
2010: Began performing her poetry with Preston Perry.
2014: Marries Preston.
2018: Appeared in documentary American Gospel: Christ Alone as a solid Christian.
2019: Partners with some of the type of people she spoke against in the film; sparks backlash and a disinvite to Answers in Genesis conference. Open Letter from Truth + Fire is published pleading to JHP to be discerning.
2019: AG filmmaker tries to reason with JHP about her discernment. Fell on deaf ears. (see below for Facebook post about this).
2020: In a Q&A Session on Instagram Story, JHP pointedly refutes her participation in AG film, declares doctrinal divides as “tribalistic”.

2021: JHP continually partners with false teachers. List from Michelle Lesley: JHP partners with false teachers-  Beth Moore, Priscilla ShirerChristine CaineLysa TerKeurstLisa HarperLauren Chandler, and Amanda Bible Williams at various LifeWay Abundance and LifeWay Women Live conferences.
2022: JHP often openly mentions hearing directly from God, (see link above “JHP comes out as prophet”) and tells some prophecies ‘God’ has allegedly given her. JHP rejects pleas for her to employ better discernment.
2022: Frequent preaching at many conferences and other locations, which requires much travel. Preaches unashamedly to men.
2023/2024: December 2023 it’s revealed JHP to be a teacher at the 10-day Bethel Music School in 2024, teaching WITH Bill Johnson. See immediately below the American Gospel summation of this sad situation-

Yes. She has crossed that line.

The discussion circling around Jackie these past few years has been whether JHP was genuinely converted and been drawn into a circle of wolves early on but will eventually come out of it, or that she was not genuinely converted and is now unconcernedly circling with wolves. I was suspicious from the start because her original testimony contained alleged direct hearing from God, and she later admitted publicly she hears from God in personal prophecies. For this reason I do not believe she is saved.

Jackie said the right things at the beginning and sadly, the wolves glommed on to her. She was promoted, touted, and trumpeted as a trophy of God. Discerners had warned that the Bible tell not to puff a new convert too soon else they become conceited. Jackie, in my opinion, showed an almost immediate disregard for wise counsel, indicating the aforementioned puffed-up-ness. No genuine Christian even with a small amount of discernment, would be comfortable with SO MANY wolves SO OFTEN as she has been associating with. And I put the timeline to show that she is not a newbie any more. She should have grown in wisdom and discernment by now, and she hasn’t.

Avoid Jackie Hill Perry. She is with her ‘tribe’- the wolves.

Jackie Hill Perry renounces Enneagram

By Elizabeth Prata

Jackie Hill Perry (JHP) is a spoken word artist who converted to Christianity in 2008 after years of drug use, promiscuity, and lesbianism. She became heterosexual, attributing the change in herself to God, saying that God can transform anyone’s life and further, that He helps a person resist temptation afterward. She is now married to Preston Perry and they have 4 children.

After conversion, she performed her poetry at conferences and became famous on the ‘circuit’ in interviews, podcasts, and TV shows giving her testimony. She is a quick study, grasping doctrinal nuances, and so she began to not only perform her own works but to teach and sadly, to preach.

JHP preaching at the Passion conference in 2022.

In 2022 JHP ‘came out’ as a prophet, explaining that she had sort of been Charismatic all along but was reluctant to say so publicly. But in 2022, JHP explained that she hears God and He comes to her in dreams and speaks. He tells her to intercede for this person or that person, or gives other instructions.

Along the way, Justin Peters noted that JHP has partnered with and endorsed some of the rankest heretics going.

Last year she also publicly renounced her participation in the American Gospel video, a documentary that teaches solidly doctrinal things featuring solid theologians.

Perhaps because she was used so quickly as a trophy of God’s grace and hadn’t had time to develop discernment, or perhaps because she is a false convert herself, as some claim, but these issues certainly are problematic. Hearing from God, taking certain actions because of instructions received in a dream, endorsing obvious heretics, not to mention preaching, are doctrinal boundaries she’s crossed that spark concern about JHP’s walk.

When Enneagram became popular, JHP began playing with it, openly promoting it, and undiscerningly endorsing it. Enneagram is a “personality test” with origins from the demonic side. More information on the Enneagram below.

Though it is sad when a convert is hurtling to the false side of things, it’s sadder because rarely do they retreat from it even an inch. But this week JHP may have done just that. She said she was prompted by the Lord to examine the origins of the occult personality test, and was shocked and dismayed at what she found. In an Instagram story, now gone, (but captured on Twitter by a follower of hers from Instagram). JHP said the following, here is the transcription-

‘I’mma’ say thus and I’mma out y’all way. I was really skeptical and have been for some years when people were saying that the Enneagram was demonic. Cuz I do feel like sometimes people can be way too deep. But the Lord prompted me to study that thing- for a good 2 days. Evil. /laughs nervously/

It ain’t even funny. Literally, doctrines of demons. Divination. Witchcraft. I had no idea. No idea. OK so one of the dudes who is originator of the contemporary understanding of Enneagram as we know it, he said that he got his information about it from an angelic visitation from a spirit or divine being named Metatron. Which we know is a demon. And then the other guy who created the types he said on YouTube he got his understanding of the wisdom of types through automatic writing. Which is a form of channeling spirits. Where a demon basically guides your hand or guides your mind to help you write down certain ideas.

So when we say I’m type 1, type 2, type 3, whatever, we are literally applying to our identity the ‘wisdom’ of demons. It’s literally that deep.

And I had…yah. /looks down sadly/

And I was telling Preston [husband] part of this is … I’ve talked about Enneagram on several occasions and so part of me feels a responsibility to renounce it publicly and to bring attention to the demonic nature of it.

—end JHP transcription—-

It takes a dose of humility to openly say you were wrong, and for that I applaud JHP. I am proud that she looked it up and I’m proud that she publicly renounced it and proud that she warned the sisters about it.

In a previous article I wrote about JHP coming out as a prophet, I’d asked for prayer for her that the Lord would deliver discernment to her. If this is an answer to prayer then it is a praise to the Lord. This is point - a praise that JHP is renouncing the Enneagram.

But point is a warning. Too often people lack discernment themselves, and after a one-inch retreat of a favored person, decide that the person is good to go, can or should be followed, and their material be absorbed. Whoa. Hold your horses there pardner. JHP still preaches, still claims direct revelation, still partners with heretics. She hasn’t renounced any of those sins. In fact, when she came out as a prophet, she got a lot of flak for it. Instead of prayerfully considering the facts of the concern stated to her, she made a second video about the issue where she dismissed the concerns, derided discernment talk from bloggers, whom she said were non-credible.

Jackie Hill Perry rejects discernment talk about her false prophesying

So praise the Lord for the good work of a social media influencer publicly renouncing a damaging and demonic activity. JHP has more than a million followers combined over her social media accounts, so it’s good she is rejecting the Enneagram. This is influence in the right direction

But friends, Matthew 10:16 says “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.” Therefore, wait a bit before jumping back on JHP’s bandwagon. Watch if the Lord will clear up JHP’s other issues. Meanwhile, avoid the Enneagram!

Jackie Hill Perry rejects discernment talk about her false prophesying

By Elizabeth Prata

On April 4 I posted a blog reacting to Jackie Hill Perry’s (JHP) coming out as a prophet. In a multi-tweet thread she announced that God deals with her in dreams, speaks to her, gives her information about other people for JHP’s intercession. My examination of her statements is here.

I am not all that familiar with JHP. I don’t follow her on social media nor have I listened to her raps, songs, or sermons (Yes, she is a preacher too). But I know a false teacher when I see one. Or when I hear one… preach to men or claim direct revelation from God. These are easy. You don’t need a nuanced or advanced discernment radar to know the bells are going off when a so-called Christian says that.

Her following is huge. She has 688,000 on Instagram and 211,000 on Twitter and I’m sure more on TikTok. Let’s say north of a million followers. So what she says and does matters, because numerous impressionable and undiscerning women are being impacted by her consistently unbiblical example.

When I posted about her admission that she is a prophet, that blog got a lot of views. See chart below. You can guess which hits are the days when my JHP essay dropped. People are influenced by influencers, and JHP is an influencer. My job is to praise the ones the Lord has raised up and warn people about the others. My job is to tell the truth using the gift of discernment for y local church and the wider body, to warn, admonish in love. And I mean it in love. No one is happy to see someone drift away from Jesus.

Jackie Hill Perry does not like “discernment bloggers” (I purposely used scare quotes). She certainly didn’t like that many have called her false. So, she posted an Instagram video pushing back. She did not address the scriptural issues raised by me or other discerners. Of course. She cannot: there is no scriptural basis for denying the spiritual gift of discerning of spirits, no basis for receiving direct revelation nor of scriptures allowing females to preach to men. So, JHP’s push-back was against discernment as an activity.

She raised the usual canards about discernment: It’s unloving. It’s unwarranted. It’s unbiblical. Well, I’ll just let you take a listen yourself. It is 52 seconds.

I’ll go through her points one by one.

JHP: “If you follow somebody or something and literally all the content they produce is talking about other people, you don’t need these people to teach you how to spot false teaching or error.”

EP: I agree with this. When authors, bloggers, preachers, teachers etc get ‘stuck’ on one topic and that is ALL they ever “literally” produce, speak of, write about, their perspective becomes skewed. We must focus on Christ and employ the spiritual gifts for His glory and the good of the body. A skewed or myopic perspective won’t accomplish that. We should be balanced.

But while I agree with her general point, her comment is a straw man, because only a few discernment bloggers produce ONLY content that is “talking about other people.” She deliberately focused on only the fringe bloggers and lumped the bad ones in with the good ones and denied the total use of the gift of discernment. JHP says people who focus too much are not to be followed. So, opponents will find a reason to try and dismiss your warning or admonitions and then just focus on the emotional.

JHP: “You need the Spirit, you need the church, and you need your Bible.”

EP: I agree with this. However, her list is not complete. You also need the gifts of the Spirit. The Spirit dispensed gifts to believers. One of them is discerning of Spirits. All gifts that are in use today are for the edification of the body, which is the church. (1 Corinthians 12:7-10).

Now this is interesting. JHP maintains that she is a charismatic (not in those terms, but yes). She believes the gift of prophecy is in use today, and tongues, and hearing from God etc. So does she not believe that the gift of discerning of spirits is also in use? Did it go away? We don’t need believers with that gift anymore? But miracles and tongues and the rest we do need?

Or does she believe that NONE of the gifts are in use today, all we need is the Bible and the Spirit and the church?. And what does she mean by needing “the church” to discern? Are not believers with gifts the ones who make up the church?

You see when Peter in 2 Peter 3:16 wrote that the untaught and unstable distort scripture, this is one way they do it. JHP is giving us an example here. They move your eyes from scripture to emotion. They use church-y verbiage like Bible and Spirit and church. They use verses but omit the parts they dislike. There’s another example of twisting coming up in a second.

JHP: “You don’t need a constant diet of someone tearing down the body to teach you how to contend for the faith”

EP: Contending for the faith is messy. It involves a fight. Not that we are pugnacious. Not that we look for it. But if you contend for anything, it gets painful. Paul contended and in almost every city he went to there were riots. All the apostles contended, and they were killed, or exiled.

I already addressed the ‘constant diet’, but now here is a common phrase, ‘you’re tearing people down.’ Well yes and no. We love people and pray for the ones like JHP. But we also tear down. We are commanded to tear down philosophies that oppose Christ.

We tear down arguments and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5 Berean Study Bible)

We are destroying arguments and all arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, (2 Corinthians 10:5 NASB).

We’re supposed to tear down anything that opposes Jesus, any teaching that is abhorrent to Him. Wolves always agree in principle that false teaching should be rejected. But wolves always say, “It’s not me. I’m not false. You’re so unloving”.

JHP: “That’s not what Jude offered he offered the old testament to them to give them some context for how to discern false teaching in their presence.

EP: That is exactly what Jude offered. He was soooo upset about false teaching he abandoned his original point of his letter about salvation so that he could teach them to discern.

Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all time handed down to the saints (Jude 1:3).

Jude is the only New Testament book whose entire focus is devoted to confronting apostasy, meaning people who have defected from the true, biblical faith. Jude gave some examples from the Old Testament about their judgment, not about ‘how to discern’. He also described in detail the immoral and unconscionable character of these false ones who were infiltrating the church. He contended, and bluntly.

JHP: guard your heart and guard your mind from those who would tempt you and disciple you into lovelessness.

EP: Jude is the only book in the Bible written by Jude. His only focus is discernment. But JHP’s standard of discernment bloggers, of which Jude is one, we should avoid Jude since “literally all the content they produce is talking about other people.”

Was Jude loveless? Did the Holy Spirit include Jude’s book in the canon as a “temptation to lovelessness”? Of course not. You see the holes in Jackie Hill Perry’s talk by now, I’m sure.

Jude continued in his book describing in detail the immoral and unconscionable character of these false ones who were infiltrating the church. He ‘talked about other people’. (And so did Paul – and by name). Jude said the false ones were:

hidden reefs (which kill ships)
selfish
dead
wild
shameful
bound for hell
grumblers
fault-finders
lusty
arrogant
flatterers
self-aggrandizing

By JHP’s standard, isn’t that “loveless” talk?

Yes, do guard your heart and mind saturate it with truth. That way you won’t be twisted by the unstable who distort it.

Sinners never allow you to point to them. The lawyer tried to justify himself. The woman at the well tried to distract Jesus from talking of her sins by switching the conversation to worship. The Rich Young Ruler tried flattery (“Good teacher“) and arrogant knowledge (“I have kept the commandments”). A false teacher will never say, “Let me take a look at what they’re saying against me to see if there is any merit to it”. A Christian will do that. A wolf won’t. A wolf will use the Bible to justify herself, distract you from her sin, and pretend to be humble and kind. But inwardly they are ravenous. Don’t feed them.

Jackie Hill Perry comes out as a ‘prophet’

By Elizabeth Prata

Jackie Hill Perry (JHP) is the latest platformed/celebrity teacher to come out and claim that she hears directly from God. She was hesitant at first to claim this, she wrote on Twitter, because the saints “get weird” when you state such things.

[For good reason, says this saint].

Jackie Hill Perry

But she felt confident enough at last to come out and say that God prophetically deals with her through dreams. She quotes what God has allegedly said, and claims that he has given her information about other people for whom she has interceded. God had told her the gender of her baby.

Her thread is here in Thread Reader Unroll, and it is also below:

I really be wanting to share how the Lord deals with me prophetically but the Saints get weird about stuff like that.

Ok ok. I’ll say this. God primarily deals with me in dreams. I’ve been enlightened, warned, and led to intercede for others through them. But lately, I’ve had an increase of “inner unctions” by the Spirit, that arise in prayer, about people I know and don’t know. It’s deep.

At the beginning of my walk, I was in a Pentecostal church that gave me room and space to explore this part of myself but after leaving, I haven’t embraced the prophetic out loud as much. Out of fear mainly. But God really does speak to and through His church and I love it.

One scenario I’ve told folks out loud is how the Lord (through an inner knowing/unction) told me I’d have a son in 2019. Got pregnant w/another girl in 2020 and I was thrown because I was KNEW what God said but I just chunked it up to me being off…

After I had Sage, we scheduled Preston’s vasectomy because I had no intention of having 4 kids. The night before it, I had a dream that I was holding a boy that was “half dead”. Not because he was dying but because he was being kept from life. As I held him, I felt fear…

and literally, in the dream, God said “Do you trust me to have a fourth child?” I told the dream to Preston, who’d also had a similar one, we canceled the vasectomy and a few months later, I was pregnant with…a boy. I say all of that to say, we serve a LIVING and SPEAKING God.

Before this moment I said to myself “If I don’t see blue powder, I’m a false prophet and I’m never claiming to hear from God again.”

I have yearssssss worth of stories. Not even primarily about me either. God has placed me around a lot of prophetic people and trust me, if you get you some friends that are sensitive to the Spirit, life will forever be interesting.

end JHP Twitter comment

Let’s put this in a larger context than just ‘tsk tsk another one is going out from us’. Which in itself is worthy to note and very sad. There are four points here, maybe more but I want to address these four.

First, let us define terms. JHP uses the word “unction.” It’s an old-fashioned word meaning anointing.

UNCTION—(1 John 2:20, 27; R.V., “anointing”). Kings, prophets, and priests were anointed, in token of receiving divine grace. All believers are, in a secondary sense, what Christ was in a primary sense, “the Lord’s anointed.” Defined in Easton’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary and Treasury of Biblical History, Biography, Geography, Doctrine, and Literature (p. 679).

We see the word used in 1 John 2:20. “But you have an anointing [unction] from the Holy One, and you all know.

Barnes’ Notes on the Bible: But ye have an unction from the Holy One – The apostle in this verse evidently intends to say that he had no apprehension in regard to those to whom he wrote that they would thus apostatize, and bring dishonor on their religion. They had been so anointed by the Holy Spirit that they understood the true nature of religion, and it might be confidently expected that they would persevere. The word “unction” or “anointing” (χρίσμα chrisma) means, properly, “something rubbed in or ointed;” oil for anointing, “ointment;” then it means an anointing. The allusion is to the anointing of kings and priests, or their inauguration or coronation, (1 Samuel 10:11 Samuel 16:13Exodus 28:41Exodus 40:15; compare the notes at Matthew 1:1); and the idea seems to have been that the oil thus used was emblematic of the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit as qualifying them for the discharge of the duties of their office. Christians, in the New Testament, are described as “kings and priests,” Revelation 1:6Revelation 5:10, and as a “royal priesthood” 1 Peter 2:51 Peter 2:9; and hence they are represented as “anointed,” or as endowed with those graces of the Spirit, of which anointing was the emblem.

So in fact, believers are ALL anointed. We ALL have ‘unction’. But we do not have special, direct revelation as JHP claims she possesses.

Now to JHP’s claims and my points-

  1. JHP mentions her first “knowing” from God, calling it unction. But it was wrong. The first time, she “knew” she’d have a boy, but it was a girl. If her knowing was from God, then JHP does not address how or why God failed to deliver the correct information. According to Deuteronomy 18:22, this alone would be enough to disqualify her from prophetic service (which expired in the Apostolic age, anyway).
  2. JHP mentions she has been hesitant to reveal her uncommon relationship with God, though it has been going on for many years, because the “saints get weird”. But note that now she feels comfortable to admit it. This is an indictment on the church and on husbands both of whom are supposed to have built for their families strong hedges against false doctrine. If a false prophet feels comfortable enough to reveal her revelations, it is not only the false prophet to blame, but her followers who have heaped her up (2 Timothy 4:3) and a weak church that lacks both discernment and discipline to maintain that hedge.
  3. This is the other #MeToo Movement- “I hear from God too.” It is becoming a scourge. Numerous women with large platforms are running around waving prophecies, predictions, and revelations from a God they obviously don’t know, but still are deceiving many. (Matthew 7:15). Birds of a feather flock together, (1 Corinthians 15:33), so more and more women feel secure enough to add their voice to the clamor. Because, who’s going to rebuke them? No one, it seems.
  4. Claiming private revelations displays a lack of discernment, declares the Bible insufficient, and makes the even ground at the cross among the saints a two-tiered hierarchy between those who hear God and those who don’t. It leaves them all open to accepting errant theology.

All of the above is a huge problem in the church. John MacArthur has said several times over the years that the greatest issue in the church is lack of discernment. This leads to biblical illiteracy, which in turn leads to false doctrines creeping in. Here is MacArthur:

Another way to approach the subject would be to ask the question, “What is the greatest need? People ask me this all the time, “What’s the greatest need in the church today? What is the most compelling need? What do you see as the biggest problem in Christianity, the biggest problem in the church? It’s simple for me to answer that. The biggest problem in the church today is the absence of discernment. It’s a lack of discernment. It’s the biggest problem with Christian people. They make bad choices. They accept the wrong thing. They accept the wrong theology. They are prone to the wrong teaching. They’re unwise in who they follow, what they listen to, and what they read. SOURCE

Ladies, God is living and He is speaking, but He speaks through His word, not in dreams telling you the gender of your baby, and other ‘unctions’ as claimed. We “get weird” because it’s false. Please do not feel left out if you also don’t hear from God as these other women claim. There are a lot of them, not just the fringe ones at the crazy edge of the faith, but women in the so-called conservative fold, like Jennie Allen (founder of IF:Gathering), Joanna Gaines (of Magnolia everything), Beth Moore (formerly of SBC & Lifeway), Sarah Young (of Jesus Calling), Priscilla Shirer (of the movie War Room), JHP, and many others. God spoke in His word through His Son. The same Son who descended from glory to live a perfect life on our behalf, die excruciatingly on the cross, be buried in a stinky tomb, and raised again to be ascended to the Father. Isn’t that enough? The Bible is enough.

When you claim the prophetic voice you hear is from God, you are saying “the Bible is not enough. I need more.” It’s as simple as that.

What can WE do?

  1. Pray for JHP that the Lord would graciously deliver to her a discerning mind.
  2. Pray for ourselves that the Lord would graciously keep us in our right mind and away from deceiving lusts and false doctrine.
  3. Keep reading the word of God. It’s the only weapon against wolves and their doctrines of demons.
  4. Be brave. Brave enough to point out false doctrine when it comes your way. Don’t be afraid of the “Tone Police” as Phil Johnson expertly encourages here (start at 22:40, sermon is aptly called “Fortitude“).

Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Matthew 7:15

Yet in the same way these people also, dreaming, defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak abusively of angelic majesties. Jude 1:8

In this 9-minute video Spencer Smith opines about Jackie Hill Perry’s recent rejection of the American Gospel documentary and where she regrets her participation in it. (Sure enough we regret your participation in it, too!). Smith also opines about his bemusement as to why JHP was included in the first place, lol. His opinions were insightful to me. (Disclaimer: I do not know who Spencer Smith is, nor have I vetted the body of his work, but I liked and agreed with this particular video).

Jackie Hill Perry: Discernment Review

By Elizabeth Prata

Jackie Hill Perry is a self-described rapper, writer, teacher, and poet. She is also a married mother and an ex-Lesbian converted to Christianity ten years ago at age 19. She expresses her Christianity through spoken word poetry, music, and essays (some at The Gospel Coalition). She has published two CD’s, and is author of the 2018 book Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was, and Who God Has Always Been. An upcoming Bible study is due to be released this October called, Jude: Contending for the Faith in Today’s Culture. Perry says she feels compelled to share the wondrous truths of Jesus through her God-given gifts as communicator.

Perry is also friends with and partnered to in ministry with some spurious characters, all in the name of ‘not being tribalistic’ according to Perry. She recently photographed herself with Bethel Church’s Jenn Johnson of Bethel Church (daughter-in-law of Bethel cult founder Bill Johnson, who along with her husband Brian founded Bethel Music and MusicU) and pronounced her a friend. Perry also has partnered with false teacher Christine Caine, speaking at Caine’s Propel Activate conferences. Perry wrote that she is concerned about several theologically sound preachers complicit in “white supremacy who are faithfully inspired by the theological musings of slave masters”. Perry is a strident social justice warrior.

She has also just been UNinvited to the Answers in Genesis/Answers for Women 2020 conference.

So, Jackie Hill Perry is a study in contrasts.

Justin Peters (@JustinPetersMin) wrote on Twitter this week,
August 26, 2019

As has Francis Chan, Jackie Hill Perry, sadly, has now endorsed some of the most rank heretics and obvious false teachers in the “evangelical” world.

Pastor Gabe Hughes also asked (@Pastor_Gabe) @JackieHillPerry-

Mrs. Perry, you were included in the documentary “American Gospel: Christ Alone,” exposing the heresy of the prosperity gospel movement. Yet now you are partnering in ministry with one of the very churches (Bethel in Redding, CA) critiqued in that film. Are you not aware of this?

Finally, though she says “where I disagree, I’m open to discussion, and where I can learn, I have ears to hear,” she instead, rebuked those who attempted to share concerns regarding the above listed statements and partnerships, implying that distancing one’s self from those who practice discerning separation is itself loveless and arrogant.

Reading her Twitter feed is a study of social justice and racial reconciliation.

She begs the age-old question, when is it time to warn against a person who seems to be on a downward slope into false religion?

Well, it seems, now.

Perry’s commitment to the pure Gospel seemed solid until lately when she wrote a concerning rant on her Instagram (August 26)

There are several worrisome phrases in her piece that concerned me. I’m sure there are other concerning aspects that more discerning and articulate people will spot that I have not addressed.

Tribalistic

It depends on what one means when they say they aren’t tribalistic. Though Seth Godin used the term “tribes”, it was Mark Driscoll in his earlier days that popularized it. Here from First Things in 2013, we have a short history of how this ridiculous term came into Christian use-

Driscoll tells Christians that they need to learn from each other, rather than criticize each other. He’s speaking to Evangelicals. He claims that Evangelicalism has been “tribalized.” In order for these tribes to be effective they need to cooperate and learn from each other. This talk of “tribe” is trendy thanks to guys like Seth Godin. Mark Driscoll has always been a trend follower.  He claims that the tribes of Evangelicalism manifest themselves through “magazines, publishing houses, blogs, social media, conferences, and schools.” These tribes are led by tribal chiefs.

Now, back to JH Perry, she said she is ‘not tribalistic’. There’s a good not tribalistic, like, in terms of ensuring that one does not divide into factions, following certain teachers to the exclusion of others, with pride on the rise. The Bible dealt with that in 1 Corinthians 1:12. Paul rebuked those who haughtily claimed he or she ‘follows’ Apollos, vs follows Paul, vs follows Peter vs follows Christ. We remember we are one body, united by Christ’s blood.

That said, there is bad not “tribalistic” to use the faddish term, in who we should partner with in ministry. There IS such a thing as purposeful separation. The correct kind of separation glorifies God. The called-for separation is from those who teach false doctrine, promote doctrines of demons, and who snatch the unwary. (1 Timothy 4:1, 2 Timothy 4:3-4, Jude 1).  As Justin Peters wrote this week:

Friends, the Bible is not unclear about how we are to deal with false teachers. We are not to partner with them. We are not to treat them as believers, befriend them (though we may evangelize them) or endorse them. They are to be marked and avoided (Rom. 16:17; 2 Jn. 9-11).

So yes, there are tribes. There’s the tribe destroying the faith, and the tribe upholding the faith.

Perry has chosen to ignore all the Bible verses that call for separation from false teachers and instead deliberately partners with them, in a twisted name of love.

White Supremacy

Perry, to her credit, has for years spoken of her commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ, the inerrancy and authority of Scripture, and love for God and neighbor, as she stated in her recent Instagram, and her music, interviews, and book.

Sadly, though, she has recently added another criteria to her bundle of characteristics that evinces a Christian. It’s whether or not they are “being blindly complicit when it comes to white supremacy, who are faithfully inspired by the theological musings of slave masters.”

Huh? That really does not make sense. The Bible is always clear. When you start overlaying cultural trends with advocacy of how to behave, that’s when things get muddy real fast, as they do here.

In 2017 Perry was hurt by “The decision made at #SBC17 to not denounce white supremacy”.

In 2018 she advocated for the church to ‘call sin sin, and to be aware of the small, flippant, and even subtle ways people speak about race.

Her emphasis on race might be a personal concern, having grown up black, just as divorce is a personal concern of mine having been the child of divorced parents, but using her platform to single out one sin that by default should be decried along with all other sins anyway, speaks to an undue emphasis that skews one’s perception of unity in the church. She believes she’s promoting unity in the church when overemphasis on race is actually divisive. Over the years as the groundswell of thrown-about terms such as white supremacy, slave masters, slaves, and racism had grown, Perry has drifted more toward the singled-out version of calling sin sin by more narrowly focusing on race, rather than promoting unity through Christ where all sins are a blot against Him.

Hers is social justice language and has nothing to do with Christianity. It is unknown whether Perry is immaturely following a trend, or allowing her deep-seated feelings on the subject of black vs white to finally emerge, but this faddish talk of slave masters and using scare quotes on “theologically sound” people influenced by white supremacy and old slave masters is unhelpful. Any time we see a fixation on cultural issues as criteria for partnering or even loving those around us who also claim Christ is a concern.

Discernment

She lacks it. This became quite evident in her follow up rebuttal to the outcry of partnering with Jenn Johnson & Bethel Music. On August 29, Perry issued a tweet of a 7-page screen shot of her written response to concerned brother’s email and also here continued. In it, Perry announces that she does not believe Word of Faith doctrine is heresy.

She’s wrong. It is.

She does not believe that the Charismatics are in error, just misguided and uninformed.

For someone who wants us all to be “nuanced” she certainly has lumped in 300 million people along a wide Charismatic spectrum into one group- and has declared them all genuine Christians.

In fact, JHP has been partnering with Propel Women and false teachers such as Lisa Harper, Christine Caine, Lisa Bevere, Priscilla Shirer, Shelley Giglio, Jenn Johnson and Bethel Music, since at least 2017 (sourcesource), and also with Sarah Jakes Roberts, daughter of TD Jakes (source)

She says that people’s reactions to her partnering with Bethel & Jenn Johnson were merely visceral reactions, and insinuates therefore that such concerns are dismissable, (while obviously her immediate response tweets were measured and worthy).

She says that she operates in “spaces” that are “primarily Conservative-Evangelical and Reformed” but she does not always remain in those “boxes” and she is free to move about, doctrinally. She said she doesn’t want people to have expectations of her that she doesn’t have for herself.

It’s not a measure of maturity to hop from one doctrinal camp to another, it’s the opposite. (Ephesians 4:14).

I’m sorry, but we do have expectations that especially our leaders remain theologically settled. We do expect that laymen and leaders won’t hop around like a bunny from one group of friends touting one doctrine to another group touting a different one. Peter did that and was rebuked to his face by Paul. (Galatians 2:11). The Circumcision group was cast out and the Nicolaitians were decried.

We are not free to be doctrinal shape-shifters. Our settled convictions forming the basis of our ministries aren’t “boxes”. She speaks of the context of her life primarily of people who have influenced her rather than doctrines she believes. She says she “doesn’t define false teachers in the way that others do,” which is not a mark of maturity nor of discernment.

Disbelief in absolutism

Post-modern adherents disbelieve there is such a thing as absolute truth. We saw hints of that in Perry when she claims that her ministry “isn’t in a box” and she is “too free” to stay in one tribe or another. Now in her rebuttal she said that it grieves her that people are put into categories, or have been classified as this or that. She said, “There’s more depth and nuance to where someone stands than there is as shown in their books or their talks.”

No. No, there isn’t. When someone writes a book outlining their theological convictions or when someone stands on a stage or a pulpit proclaiming their theological convictions, they are literally telling you where they stand. You don’t rely on unseen depths or nuances. Your job is then to compare what they say to the Bible.

Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. (Acts 17:11).

Perry is actually demonstrating in herself and advocating that others employ an indistinct theological viewpoint and accept all who claim Christ unless they are at some far, far end of an undefined spectrum. Yet doctrine is actually narrow, divides, and excludes most people, even and especially many who claim Christ. (Matthew 7:21).

Preaches to men

She preaches sermons, called sermons, to both men and women. She did at UYWI National Conference in 2017, Chicago’s Legacy Disciple Conference, Legacy ATL 2019, and many other venues. Partnering with women such as Christine Caine & Propel Activate does not bode well since the women involved in that conference also preach and believe it is totally OK with God that they do so.

Conclusion

Perry converted at age 19 in 2009. A year later she made news and notice when she issued her spoken word rap called “My Life as a Stud” (about taking on the manly role in a lesbian relationship). A couple of years later came the famous “Jig-A-Boo”. Many people were stunned at such a young person’s wisdom and courage contained in the title and the lyrics of Jig-A-Boo, myself included. The problem is that young, untested people launched into positions of acclaim or responsibility before they are tested often leads to downfalls, pride, or drifting into false teaching. I hope that is not the case with Perry, she said herself at the end of her 7-page response that she’s young and to pray for her and give her time. But the slide is evident and it’s not new.

Remember, her original rant on Instagram and her 7-page response is to push-back to the rant are all so that she can defend her decision to partner with one of the worst cult leaders operating today and other false teachers. Her refusal to separate from Jenn Johnson, Bethel, Propel, and to listen to those who urge her to do so are marks of someone who should not be followed, at least not at this time.

I do pray this young woman will heed correction and that the Lord will graciously guide her back to solidity. She is a gifted communicator who loves the Lord and obviously has much to say and an ability to say it.
