Tons of dead fish appear on, then disappear from Norwegian beach

On January 2 I wrote about millions of dead herring that had overnight washed up on a shore in Norway. I’d mused that 2011 opened with bird deaths and then fish deaths, and 2012 seemed like it was a mirror of that weirdness exactly one year prior. Now, more weirdness: from the same spot in Norway-

Tons of dead fish appear on, then disappear from Norwegian beach
Tons of dead herring that washed up on a Norwegian beach on New Year’s Eve are now gone, and no one is sure how they got there or where they went. Local resident Jan-Petter Jorgensen told Norway’s TV2 he went to look at the thousands and thousands of fish after seeing a Facebook posting about them, according to a report on The Foreigner. Joregensen said it was fortunate the icy cold prevented the mass of dead fish from raising a stink. “It is 15 degrees below zero today, so the cold means they don’t smell. Nevertheless, the smell will be pretty intense in the long run,” he said, according to The Foreigner report. Turns out that wasn’t a problem. Views and News from Norway reports that as of Tuesday, most of the dead fish were gone, perhaps pushed out to sea by tides and winds. The local mayor said they’ll likely sink in the ocean, according to the report. Why they came to be on the shore remains a mystery.”

From the Norwegian news outlet Views and News from Norway:
“UPDATED: Thousands of dead herring, known as sild in Norwegian, covered a beach in northern Norway over the New Year’s weekend and no one is sure how or why they landed there to die. One senior marine researcher said he’s never seen anything like it, and then the dead fish disappeared as mysteriously as they came.”

Millions of dead fish wash up in Norway

Updated to include link to 2012 Aflockalypse, birds dropping dead (again) in Beebe Ark.
Updated to note new article saying all the fish have mysteriously diappeared

2011 opened with masses of birds falling to the ground in Beebe Arkansas. That unexplained bird death event was followed by many others in the ensuing weeks. The same excuses were offered: maybe the fireworks scared them…maybe they were poisoned…maybe they got cold…maybe the upcoming avian necropsy tests will show something…

Then the weirdness turned to fish kills happening all over, and extended to starfish, seals, penguins and other aquatic life. The bird deaths was called “Aflockalypse” and a google map was soon created to keep track of all the unexplained deaths on sea and on land happening all over the world. Then it petered out. Just in time too, because the massive earthquake at Chile and at Christchurch happened which claimed our attention. Then March brought the triple whammy Japan catastrophic events of 9.0 quake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster. Nothing more was heard from January’s Aflockalypse…until exactly one year later, on January 1, 2012 when it happened again.

I’ve been waiting to see, since the 2011 bird death event was accompanied by fish kills, if that also would happen again. And it has:

Norway: Overnight, the beach was full of dead herring (google translated)
“The inhabitants of resin in Troms could hardly believe his eyes on the morning of New Year’s Eve, the beach was a large amount, an estimated tens of tons, dead herring, writes Northern Lights. No one knows for sure what’s happened in the popular hiking area in Nordreisa municipality. However, various theories have been tossed around, explains Jan-Petter Jorgensen (44), who took mass death in sight on the beach with his dog Molly.”

And once again, media is “puzzled”
Mass herring death puzzles officials, locals
“Several tons of dead herring that carpeted a beach in northern Norway have puzzled researchers and local residents, media reported Monday. Local resident Jan-Petter Jorgensen, who inspected the beach at Kvaenes in Nordreisa with his dog at the weekend, estimated there were several tons of fish.”

And the same old excuses are offered, maybe there was not enough oxygen in the water, maybe a school of predators chased them in, maybe a storm happened…we’re waiting test results…maybe that will show something…

And here we go again. Keep looking up!

More dead animals washing up

Oh how His creation is groaning!

Illinois officials report major fish kill on Little Wabash River
“Officials with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois EPA are investigating the source of a major fish kill along the Little Wabash River in White County. Local sportsman Jack Emery of rural Carmi said he first started hearing about dead fish appearing in the Little Wabash a few weeks ago. However, in the past few days, the number of dead fish has exploded into the thousands.”

More at link. No cause is found as yet.

Thousands of dead birds wash ashore at Wasaga Beach
Thousands of dead birds have flooded the shores of Georgian Bay in a scene that locals compared to the devastation from an oil spill. Dead loons, ducks and seagulls covered “every foot” of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park’s shorelines on Saturday, said local Faye Ego, who walks her dog there daily. “It’s like when you see the oil slicks,” Ego said. “It turns your stomach. It’s awful.” Between 5,000 and 6,000 dead waterfowl are scattered along a 3-kilometre stretch near Wasaga Beach, said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Peter Leon.”

Wasaga Beach is on the shores of Georgian Bay, Ontario, north of Toronto. Wabash River is in southern IL at the border of Illinois and Indiana. Neither is close to the other. Both remain a mystery as yet as to a cause of the kills.

More animal deaths: fish in China, saiga antelope in Kazakhstan

BBC News reports: Mystery over mass antelope deaths in Kazakhstan
A mystery disease has killed more than 12,000 saiga antelope in Kazakhstan. Conservationists are warning that the mass deaths could spell disaster for the saiga, which is already an endangered species. The figure could account for up to a quarter of the global population of the species. “No one can figure out what’s happened. We see dead animals concentrated in a certain area.” A lung disease may be to blame. “The government is baffled.” It is noted in the video that this phenomenon happened in another district, “where a strange white fog was seen.”

In China yesterday, wholesale death on a large scale. Here is news, Google translated from Chinese: “Jiaxing City, about 2.5 millions kg of fish aquatic products wholesale death”
“The day before yesterday morning, is located in Jiaxing Economic Development Zone, integrated logistics park’s aquatic products wholesale market, almost all of the fishmongers have suffered heavy losses – they just wholesale to the number of sudden mass mortality of fish. Even more surprising is that the same group of fish, the river side of the river with the market almost all the deaths raised deposit, with the water the fish are kept safe and sound support.” The translation seems to be saying that all the fish in the fishmongers’ tanks died.  Apparently, as fishmongers arrived to their stalls, they saw that all the fish were dead. “said the fish market in the large-scale emergence of unnatural death. Police rushed to the aquaculture market.” Further, “After the accident, the environmental protection department of Jiaxing City staff quickly rushed to the scene, taking the water samples for testing, yesterday, the reporter learned that, after testing, the environmental protection department did not find water contamination.”

There are also unconfirmed reports of sparrows dead in a Chinese village too, but the video is in Chinese and I can’t translate that.

Here is a Google Map of the animal deaths. I can’t vouch for its complete accuracy, but I believe it does show a close-enough picture of what is going on. When you see the map, you’ll know.
