Atheists, unbelievers, the foolish: Of pastafarianism, spaghetti monsters, and wearing a colander on one’s head

I was once all of the above. Though I never went so far as to declare my godlessness to the world by wearing a colander on my head as a spaghetti monster statement, I very likely did just as many foolish things that blasphemed my God that were just as evidently foolish to the believers around me as wearing a strainer on my head.

Asia Lemmon, whose legal name appears on her driver’s license as Jessica Steinhauser, is shown wearing a metal colander on her head on her Utah driver’s license in this undated photo. Lemmon says the pasta strainer represents her beliefs in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and says state employees took the photo after she presented them with documents on religious freedom. The Flying Spaghetti Monster movement, also known as “Pastafarianism,” started in 2005 as a protest against teaching intelligent design as an alternative to evolution in Kansas schools. … Hats and headgear are not allowed for driver’s license photos unless they’re religious garments, Rolfe said. After the first few Pastafarians came in about two years ago, state officials determined the church is a recognized religion and its members don’t require any special paperwork, she said.

Wikipedia’s write-up of the Flying Spaghetti Monster movement/religion/parody.

On the one hand, it is difficult to live in a time where God is maligned on every side and at every turn. It hurts to see and hear our precious Savior mocked so badly. It just hurts.

To the choirmaster. Of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. (Psalm 14:1)

On the other hand, it is wonderful to see people turn from their blaspheming ways, repent and be saved. We know those who are not saved are in darkness, and they are in despair. They would deny it, but they are. Being in Jesus is refreshing to the soul-

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, (Acts 3:19)

I often cry out to the Lord to come and get His Bride. It is hard to be around so much sin, and worse still, to sin myself. But then again, I am sure people were crying out to the Lord in 2003 for Him to return and I’m glad He didn’t then because I wasn’t saved until the end of that year. There are many we are praying for who aren’t saved yet.

At some point though, He WILL return and leave behind many unsaved people, some of whom may be wearing a colander on their heads. Meanwhile, two things. First, let’s be patient with them. They can’t help wearing a colander on their head. They think they are doing something good and wise and funny.

For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? (1 Corinthians 5:12)

And second, witness with urgency. Jonah preached,

But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. (Jonah 3:8)

Yes, let everyone urgently call on God.

Religion-free bible now published. "I don’t need religion…I have God"

There is a popular concept now among the hipster, cool, quasi-religious wannabees, and that is that religion is outmoded. It is passe. It is so passe, we need to get out of the four walls of the church, where there is dusty doctrine, and “worship” a “God” in the way that seems right to them.

If you can’t understand the bible and do not want to do what it says then it stands to reason that they don’t want to be where it is preached, not submitting to its authority

We’ve seen over and over that the world rejects the Holy God and they do this in many ways. They reject the Son outright and go to idols (Hindus, for example, or Buddhists or Muslims). They do this by rejecting the Spirit unto blasphemy (Blaspheming the Holy Spirit, Charismatic Chaos). Lately, the most popular way to reject truth has been to reject His Word. In all sorts of ways, they reject the clarity, sufficiency, and authority of the word.

One way is by what I’ve written about this week, is that people reject His written truth, by saying that doctrine can’t be understood absolutely. The harshest push-back I receive on this blog and in life is not from atheists but from people who call themselves “Christians.” When I say that doctrine matters or that false teachers abound, Katie bar the door.

It is hard to call yourself a Christian when you reject the total package outright, so they claim Christianity but subvert the authority of the Word by saying it cannot be understood and to attempt to understand it is arrogance.

However, no matter if the person is an atheist or a Christian-in-name-only or a worshiper in a different religion, the soul longs for eternity.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

This verse means that earthly pursuits are unprofitable when they become a primary pursuit, they are not life’s chief good. God has put eternity in man’s heart, meaning, He originally made man for His eternal purpose, and after the fall, we became separated from it. The heart still longs for that purpose though, and will never be completely satisfied unless he becomes complete. Gloriously, the only completion is in Him…who they reject. How circular. Therefore they seek but do not find. (John 7:34)

That’s why they continue in their pseudo-religious activities. Like this one:

Religion-Free Bible” is now published.

The Religion-Free website, by Jim Palmer, says that there are 25 reasons the world needs a religion-free bible, number one being “The Bible is not a religious book.”

Huh?

Number two on the list of why the world needs a religion-free bible is, “The story of the Bible has value for all of humankind, regardless of your religious tradition or no religion at all.”

Duh.

Number 4 says, “The voice of the Bible deserves to be heard, unshackled from the repressive spin often imposed upon it.”

The Word is not religious, but it deserves to be heard, and is not being heard, and Mr Palmer is going to unleash it so it can be heard. Something that GOD OF THE UNIVERSE was unable to do. Make it heard I mean. So Mr Palmer will. But in a different version, stripped of the nasty bits.

You see how quickly this gets contradictory and complicated.

Number 7 says “In the hands of the people, the Bible can be an instrument of love, beauty, peace, acceptance and harmony in the world.”

Well for 2000 years, the completed bible has been in the hands of the people and has been an instrument of love, beauty, peace, acceptance and harmony. Where’s Mr Palmer been?

Wait for it, wait… now we get to it, Number 8 says,

“Humankind needs permission to walk away from the lie we learned about ourselves that we are bad, not good enough, unacceptable to God, and something is wrong with us.”

Oh, I get it, the bible is good until we get to the place were we read about ourselves.

“as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;” (Romans 3:10)

So in Mr Palmer’s view, the bible has value for all of humankind, is an instrument of peace and beauty, and “can be a profound inspiration for art in every form” (#10) … yet contains lies. Mr Palmer is here to straighten it all out.

See, the problem is that eternity in the heart thing. We see and know God, through the revelation of Himself in creation,

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20)

The human spirit in its natural state wants to disobey all the time, our sinful nature writhing under the thumb of God, which is shown in His creation and in His word. Yet they reject the Light and stay in the darkness, ever seeking that completion and satisfaction that the world cannot bring.

“always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.” (2 Timothy 3:7).

This dichotomy of the unsaved human soul is not only seen in empty projects like Mr Palmer’s where he values the bible but not the word, wants its beauty without the authority, is shown this survey.

“Research Half of Adults Say Religious ‘Nones’ Are Bad for America”

“As more Americans identify as religiously unaffiliated, almost half of all adults say the so-called rise of the nones is a bad thing for society. … Among white evangelical Protestants, more than 3 in 4 (78 percent) say the trend is harmful. Only 4 percent see it as a good thing. The data do not specify what “bad” entails … Friendly Atheist blogger Hemant Mehta says that means “even some Nones think it’s a bad thing that more people are Nones.” CT previously covered the dramatic increase in the religiously unaffiliated (as reported by Pew last fall), as well as examined “the end of nominal Protestantism.”

“Nearly half of all American adults think it’s a bad thing that more people are not religious. Only 11% of them find it to be a good thing. You know what that means? Even some Nones think it’s a bad thing that more people are Nones.” (source)

So…the new cultural mantra is: “I’m not religious (too cool for that) but you ought to be” ?

At root is the unconscious but very present intuitive understanding that it is the Holy Spirit Who restrains us from being really bad.

It is understood by secular society that many religious people are moral, and they do good. It is recognized that they subscribe to a set of moral standards that guide and inform their choices as neighbors, community members, and global citizens. It is recognized that people who aren’t religious benefit from the boundaries within which the religious people operate. Without that imposed religious boundary, what we are really looking at is a frontier, a wild, wild west of behavior that is not only unpalatable, but dangerous. Like this:

A New York City man is under arrest for allegedly scooping up a toddler from the beach and running toward the water. The Daily News says Esteves allegedly picked up the child as his 18-year-old mother went for a swim. Police say the 2-year-old’s uncle ran after Esteves and the two briefly struggled until two police officers ran over and handcuffed Esteves. (source)

What on earth would make a man do a terrible and stupid thing like that, and to a baby no less?! Inexplicable and/or unexpected behavior makes people say, “Yes, having no religion may not be a good idea after all. Society is held together by its glue.”

In addition, what the ‘nones’ understand is that they know without knowing that they are enjoying common grace. Common grace is defined as:

Common Grace is the grace God gives to creation as a whole. In this universal non-salvific form of grace, God allows the sun to shine upon both the righteous and the unrighteous. God shows his goodness to all people when He feeds them, allows them to work, experience beauty, learn and have joy. It is also common grace that “restrains” the wrath of God until a later time.

The Restrainer under common grace can be seen as working like in this photo of a trust fall- Holy Spirit holds the unsaved up from falling into the total sin and depravity that is really in us. He does this by enabling His believers to witness to the truth from His word- a word only believers can understand. That, and their response to common grace prevents them from sliding fully into the pit of depravity that is in each of us.

When the rapture happens prior to the Tribulation, the Restrainer will cease His restraining ministry.

And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.” (2 Thessalonians 2:6-7)

Once the Restrainer is removed, their foot shall slide in due time

“Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.” (Deuteronomy 32:35)

The trust fall of above becomes this below:

Surprise! We are bad! We do need Jesus! Wrath is real! The feeling that too many ‘nones‘ was a bad idea  was correct! Of course the mistake they make is in thinking that all religions are equally valid and equally effective in restraining immoral, unethical, and criminal behavior. The “I don’t need religion” people think that common grace just exists from nowhere and is delivered to earth without a sovereign, sort of like a mysteriously appearing force we’re lucky to have around. However, it is only the Holy Spirit who restrains, and when the time comes, He will not do that anymore.

Mr Palmer has stated, “The voice of the Bible deserves to be heard, unshackled from the repressive spin often imposed upon it.” I agree. The voice of God as heard by the writers of holy writ put down what they heard and that Voice is worthy to be obeyed. He has made Himself known through His son, the Word.

When it is the time, God will tell the Spirit to unshackle man’s desires. The common grace they had benefited from by the witness of His saved people will be gone. Even the beauty of the creation they enjoyed seeing Him in will be gone, steadily and increasingly dismantled by His purposeful and orderly UNcreation during the Tribulation. Mr Palmer wants things unshackled, he will get it. Man’s depraved sinfulness will be unleashed upon the world.

The religion-free bible won’t help them, then.

“You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” (John 7:34)

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.” (Amos 8:11)

What Mr Palmer and the followers of a religion-free religion will discover all too unfortunately, is that where he says, “Humankind needs permission to walk away from the lie we learned about ourselves that we are bad, not good enough, unacceptable to God, and something is wrong with us” is totally and the exact opposite of the truth. As the verse below shows, a hostile search for the Lord will be denied, but a humble appeal as a sinner will yield results. I pray that such a a search begins now, on this side of the Tribulation, a soon to be enacted event which will be the worst time on earth ever.

Dore: The Pharisee And The Publican

The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 18:11-14)

About that Ted Turner comment…

The End Time, technically since the moment Jesus ascended and the angels told the onlookers He’d be back (Acts 1:11), and especially since Israel was created in 1948, are ramping up like the birth pangs we’re told will come. God is making Himself more evident in the world and will do so until the rapture and then things will go forward on warp speed.

Though God is speaking to us not only through the Spirit but through the events listed in the end time discourse, and are loud and clear to us Christians. But for most lost people, they are part of the background din satan successfully weaves into “normal life” so that the mind remains blinded. That was why it was all the more extraordinary that super-atheist and billionaire Ted Turner thinks that the BP Oil Spill could be a message from God. Is the Spirit speaking to Mr Turner? And if He is, is the message being received correctly?…

Turner has been openly hostile to Christianity in the past, once famously saying “Christianity is a religion for losers,” and as reported here, “Seeing CNN employees wearing ashes on their forehead on Ash Wednesday, he remarked, “What are you, a bunch of Jesus freaks? You ought to be working for Fox.” He is so viscerally uncomfortable with the Christian faith that he blamed his divorce from his third wife, Jane Fonda, partly on her decision to become a practicing Christian.” He joked that he has been “born again seven times, so one of them is bound to take.”

This week in an interview with CNN, he said that the BP Oil spill may be God trying to tell us something. Now, for a super-hostile atheist to liken earth’s events to the divine hand of God is a great glimmer of light to the blinded mind. But oftentimes, it is not enough.

What Turner said was, “Could be, He’s sending us a message.” Turner sat down with Harlow recently to discuss the energy policy in the United States. He continued, “I’m not a real religious person, but I’m somewhat religious. And I’m just wondering if God is telling us he doesn’t want us to drill offshore,” he said. “And right before that we had that coal mine disaster in West Virginia where we lost 29 miners,” as well as repeated mining disasters – “seems like there’s one over there every week” – in China. “Maybe the Lord’s tired of having the mountains of West Virginia, the tops knocked off of them so they can get more coal.”

Most people do not make the connection between things that happen in the world and God’s Divine Hand and Plan. The end time is a time where God, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance, rolls out opportunity after opportunity for us to do so. Note that the verse is often misquoted ‘not willing that any should perish but all come to everlasting life…” but this is not correct. The goal is REPENTANCE. The end time is a time for all to see a Holy God pouring out His warnings and to make the connection to self, our sin and rebellion against God. The first step is repenting.

Turner said it could be that God is sending us a message. Yes, He is. But what message? The message is not that He doesn’t want us to drill or mine. It is that He wants us to repent. It’s all too easy for the blinded mind to understand there is a God but never make the connection to sin, self, and Jesus’ work on the cross as the only way to heaven. The end time is a period where we pray that the lost not only acknowledge a Holy God’s warnings to an unbelieving world, but to have them understand that without Jesus we are nothing and worse, we are destined for hell forever.

Before we get over-excited about Turner’s possible conversion remember that even the demons believe in God, and tremble. But they do not repent. If the Spirit is working in Turner, and in others during the end time, who see these things coming to pass and wonder about God, pray for them. But pray that the most important step is taken, that they repent of their own sins. It’s hard to imagine the man who re-wrote God’s Ten Commandments and carries them around in his wallet (and by the way they are all “earth”- oriented, none recognize his personal sin) is the same man who would get down on his kneels acknowledging Jesus and submitting his life to Him, the next step after repentance. Always keep repentance in mind. Acknowledging a God-sent message is not enough, and satan strives to misquote God’s messages to us at every turn.

In an ironic statement, when Turner created CNN, he said, “we won’t be signing off until the world ends. We’ll be on, and we will cover the end of the world, live, and that will be our last event–and when the end of the world comes, we’ll play ‘Nearer my God to Thee’ before we sign off.” He is likely right. During the Tribulation when the Two Witnesses are killed, they lay in the street of Jerusalem for three days and then are miraculously resurrected and ascend to heaven before the astonished eyes of the world. (Rev 11:8-9; 11-12) It may well be true that an intrepid reporter with a CNN microphone will interview the fearful crowd as the Two Witnesses stir from having received the breath of life from God and float up to heaven upon His command to “Come up Hither!” I hope that by then Mr Turner is a participant in Jesus’s Kingdom and not just a scoffing observer. For Christians are not “losers,” but are winners. “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.” (1 Cor 9:24)

UK poll shows creationism more believed than Darwinism

A poll on Creationism was conducted in the ultra-secular United Kingdom and the results show that a majority doubt Darwin’s theories of evolution.

Poll reveals public doubts over Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution
“More than half of the public believe that the theory of evolution cannot explain the full complexity of life on Earth, and a “designer” must have lent a hand, the findings suggest. And one in three believe that God created the world within the past 10,000 years.”

The poll was taken in advance of the celebrations planned to honor Darwin’s 200th birthday. The response from super-Atheist Richard Dawkins was predictable. Apparently, he is right and half of Britain is wrong. “Richard Dawkins, the evolutionary biologist and author of The God Delusion, said the findings revealed a worrying level of scientific ignorance among Britons.”

“In the survey, 51 per cent of those questioned agreed with the statement that “evolution alone is not enough to explain the complex structures of some living things, so the intervention of a designer is needed at key stages” while 40% disagreed, while the remainder stated they didn’t know.”

God planned it thus. He said in Romans 1:20 that “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” The verse just prior says that ‘God has made it plain to them.’

This is indeed good news that people notice His hand in the creation all around us, however it should not stop there. It is a long jump from acknowledging a remote Creator who made a complex world, and recognizing our individual sin that is keeping us from a personal relationship with Him. That half of the UK seems not to have closed the door to their Creator is monumental, but the path is narrow and those who that acknowledge Creation is designed need to put one spiritual foot in front of the other and connect sin with their need for salvation through Jesus’ forgiveness. It is the very important next step.

In the article, Dawkins railed at the results. “Prof Dawkins expressed dismay at the findings of the ComRes survey, of 2,060 adults, which he claimed were confirmation that much of the population is “pig-ignorant” about science.” Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, accused Dawkins of evolving into a “very simple kind of thinker”.

These debates are all well and good but let them not keep the lost from pondering further on His majesty in relations to our wretchedness. If you would like an example of a very advanced thinker who concluded after many years of searching that Jesus and the Bible are the only truth, watch this testimony for a blessing. Stick with it, it builds. And I remind us one final time: His creation shows us plainly that we are without excuse.
