Ladies, if you hear a disembodied voice talking to you purporting to be God or from God, ignore it and get to your pastor for prayer as soon as possible.

Did you know that most of the cults started in the world were because a voice from the sky directed them or revealed something?
Jennie Allen of IF:Gathering, Beth Moore, Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, Sarah Young, Ellen G. White, Hannah Brencher at Christine Caine’s Propel Women, Christine Caine, Priscilla Shirer, Puritan Anne Hutchinson (who almost broke the nascent Massachusetts Bay Colony over her direct revelations) and many others have claimed to have heard directly from God. Jennie Allen’s was a “voice from the sky”, but close enough. Many of these women now actively teach HOW to hear the voice of God.

God isn’t whispering. God isn’t speaking today, except through His word.
Yet lots of women claim that He is, and actually enact the command they’d heard. This Catholic woman in Ohio started a restaurant because a voice told her to. She compared herself to Noah, quoting exactly what the voice told her, (claiming it was the Holy Spirit). She eventually succumbed to its command. Here is the story-
Offering her remarkable story to Rotarians, Homan said she’s just an average person, a Catholic who has always loved God but had never before heard the Holy Spirit. That all changed about two years ago when she said she heard a loud voice telling her to build a restaurant. “He said ‘there are many good people but they’re not coming to my churches … but they’ll go out to eat as lives are so busy,’ ” Homan recounted.

Pastor Jim Osman and Justin Peters discuss this phenomenon in an interview based on Osman’s book launch, “God Doesn’t Whisper.” Their discussion is on Youtube and there are two parts so far of three.
Video God Doesn’t Whisper part 1: Is God still speaking to us today? If so, how do we know His voice? I interview Pastor Jim Osman about his new book entitled God Doesn’t Whisper. This is the first of a 3-part installment.
Video God Doesn’t Whisper part 2: This is the second installment of God Doesn’t Whisper. In this episode we will look at 3 common misunderstandings of the Hearing from God (HVG) theology and also discuss commonly misinterpreted texts such as “My sheep hear My voice” and the “still small voice.”
If you don’t have the time to watch a video, I found this excerpt from a longer essay helpful.
Cornerstone Baptist Church in Darlington SC wrote, “Today, everyone wants to “hear” from God, and almost daily there is a new claim of “special revelation.” I would submit, however, that there are few things more dangerous to the mission of the church than “God told me” theology. There are several potential dangers:”
- “God told me” theology rejects the theological position that the biblical canon is closed, with its claim that God has already told us everything we need for life and godliness in the Bible.
- “God told me” theology embraces the reality that believers have access to “special revelation” from God that equals/trumps the revelation of scripture.
- “God told me” theology places subjective, personal experience in a position of authority over the objective truth of scripture.
- “God told me” theology minimizes the role of scripture in personal experience and the need for the faithful interpretation of scripture.
- “God told me” theology cannot be repudiated on the basis of scripture, because “special revelation” places itself above scripture.
“When studying false claims of “special revelation” by false prophets, there is a consistent formula that can be applied: Weak hermeneutics + flawed concept of biblical revelation = dangerous “God told me” theology.” (—end Cornerstone Church quote)
Sisters, if you are NOT hearing directly from God, be thankful. He is not speaking today except through His word. It is written in Hebrews 1:1–2 that “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.” Since He is not speaking aloud personally to anyone any more at present, then the voice you hear is from a different spirit not of God. If a spirit is not of God, it is a demon.
Remember, the very first deception in the world was satan speaking through a serpent to Eve, pretending to be from God. She’d heard a voice, too- and obeyed it. Satan was successful, and he has been using that same method ever since.
Read your Bible. If you want to hear the voice of God, as Justin Peters famously said, “Read your Bible out loud.” There will be a time when ALL Christians will hear directly from Jesus, and that is when we get to heaven and see Him face to face. He will speak to us then, likely to say “Well done good and faithful servant”. THAT is what I want to hear, and I can wait for it.
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:12)
Elizabeth, Thank you so much for introducing us to Pastor Jim Osman. I am as excited about his book as I was John MacArthur’s book How To Know God’s Will. When one is not neglecting biblical disciplines ( bible study, praying, walking in the Spirit, confessing your sins, discernment ect.) you can do anything you want ! Self imposed conflicts fall away. Very profound. Larry and Sandy

I can’t remember where I got this from, but I recently shared it with some friends:
The most dangerous sentence in the English language is “God told me.” The second most dangerous is, “God told me to tell you…”
