Introducing the Iran War Clock

It’s ten minutes to midnight and there is a 48% chance of war with Iran…according to a new clock that tracks these things

It’s 10 Minutes to Midnight: Introducing The Iran War Clock
War or peace in the Middle East amounts to a coin toss. The probability that the United States or Israel will strike Iran in the next year is 48 percent according to a new project that predicts the chances of conflict–the Iran War Clock. And as a result, the clock is set to 10 minutes to midnight.”

“How does the Iran War Clock work?
“We’ve assembled a high-profile panel of experts from the policy world, academia, and journalism to periodically predict the odds of conflict. Each panelist makes an individual estimate about the percentage chance of war and we report the average score. Based on this number, we adjust the Iran War Clock so that the hand moves closer to, or further away from, midnight.”

Points to consider:

1. The odds of war in the Middle East are NOT based on a coin toss. They are based on the Word of God.

2. Therefore the odds of war in the Middle East are 100%. Read Ezekiel 38-39, Isaiah 17, Isaiah 19, Psalm 83, Joel 2, Revelation 19…

3. Though the Iran War Clock is man’s attempt to quantify the future and therefore is not accurate like God’s Word is, it does tell us that the handwriting is on the wall. The secular world sees what is coming. They do not believe it is based on the bible, but they see it nonetheless.

So do we. O Lord, come soon!

This N That for you

I’m currently reading “The Rise of Evangelicalism: The Age of Edwards, Whitefield and the Wesleys (History of Evangelicalism Series)”. It is good. It is the inaugural book in a series that charts the course of English-speaking evangelicalism over the last 300 years. I’m fascinated by the lives of Edwards and Wesley and I’m thrilled to be getting familiar with Whitefield.

I bought “What Is a Healthy Church Member?” part of the IX Marks series. The blurb says “God intends for us to play an active and vital part in the body of Christ, the local church. He wants us to experience the local church as a home more profoundly wonderful and meaningful than any other place on earth. He intends for his churches to be healthy places and for the members of those churches to be healthy as well. This book explains how membership in the local church can produce spiritual growth in its members and how each member can contribute to the growth and health of the whole.”

I also bought “Expository Listening: A Practical Handbook for Hearing and Doing God’s Word.” The blurb says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”––James 1:22 In many people’s mind, if they don’t get anything out of the sermon, it’s the preacher’s fault. But that’s only half true. The Bible teaches that listeners must partner with the preacher so that the Word of God accomplishes its intended purpose of transforming their life. Expository Listening is your handbook on biblical listening. It is designed to equip you not only to understand what true, biblical preaching sounds like, but also how to receive it, and ultimately, what to do about it. You need to know how to look for the Word of God, to love the Word of God, and to live the Word of God. In this way, God and His Word will be honored and glorified through your life.”

They are both small and short books, and I’m looking forward to digging in during our Spring Vacation. I already have a good biblical grounding on the two topics from my studies, so now I’m looking forward to enacting the principles even better than I try to do now. I can improve. I want to improve. These books will help me do that.

I don’t know about you but the constant touting of personal visits to heaven or personal visits/visions from Jesus on earth are getting on my nerves. Justin Peters does a great job in this video of summarizing the problems with these visits and goes into more detail in the article linked below.
Your Best Afterlife Now – An Examination and Critique of Claimed Visits to Heaven and Hell, by Justin Peters

This next story is a movement that seeks to redefine what womanhood is.

Proud to be a slut
“SlutWalk, a tradition that started a year ago in Canada, is making its way to Israel this month, according to Haaretz.com. The event was inspired by a Canadian policeman who said that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” Women who reject this attitude protested in Toronto last year and since then SlutWalks have been held all over the world.SlutWalks (Mitzad Sharmutot in Hebrew) will be held in Tel Aviv on March 16, in Haifa a week later and in Jerusalem in April. What is the Signification? Reclaiming the word “slut” is the aim of SlutWalks. And thanks to Rush Limbaugh’s flagrant use of the word in reference to Sandra Fluke last week, the global protest couldn’t be more timely.”

This next story out of Israel mirrors one in Florida USA. At root, these two stories about lesbian motherhood – among many others like them –  are redefining what motherhood is. More on that in a moment.

Israeli court recognizes lesbian couple as mothers of child
“The Ramat Gan Family Court decided Sunday, in a precedential verdict, to recognize both women of a lesbian couple as the mothers of a baby boy.”

Redefining womanhood and  motherhood is part of a progression Paul warned us about in Romans 1:18-32. First, men suppress the evidence of God that is clear in the world. Then because they fail to honor Him, their hearts become darkened. They become foolish. God gives them over to what their hearts want to do: indulge their impure lusts. Then those lusts become depraved as men seek to lie with each other. Things get worse still, for the women then seek to lie with each other. “…and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.” (Romans 1:27). In verse 26 Paul says “even the women” did these things. This is significant.

The 19th century commenter Charles Hodge said, “Paul first refers to the degradation of females among the heathen because they are always the last to be affected in the decay of morals and their corruption is therefore proof that all virtue is lost.”

In other words, when the women go, society goes.

Stop coddling heresy

I am heartbroken every day at the increasing encroachment of apostasy in Christians. I saw on Erin Benzinger’s blog Do Not Be Surprised, this clip from WretchedTV called “Stop Coddling Heresy“. It is about 4 minutes, and features Pastor Steve Lawson preaching about John Knox’s stand for the Gospel to Mary Queen of Scots. He explains that it is the standing on the Word that pierces the heart, not accommodating culture, building bridges, or diluting the message. It is understanding of our wretched state of total depravity that allows us to see the grace of God and our need for Jesus.

Knox stood up to the Queen, and remember this one was called Bloody Mary because her usual response to people challenging her was to chop off their head. Lawson explains the power of the Gospel and how it pierces sinning hearts, and how desperately we need the truth proclaimed from the pulpit. Mary’s response to Knox was a knee-swooning, heart wrenching praise to the Lord. This climactic moment in Lawson’s clip where Mary capitulates is then juxtaposed with some words from Joel Osteen. I won’t transcribe the piece because the power is in hearing. Faith comes by hearing doesn’t it? (Romans 10:17). I urge you to take a moment to listen, it isonly and when it gets to 4 minutes. Osteen, the juxtaposition of the two men, Knox and Osteen, one right after another, is devastating. Please, please, listen to “Stop Coddling Heresy.”

I was at a place the other day where I saw an Osteen book on the table with a bookmark in it. And next to it a little ways away was another Osteen book, this one also with a bookmark in it. Osteen presents a different Gospel. He touts a different god who is no god. Osteen’s god is not the God of sin and judgment and repentance. He is the coach in the sky who will give you a good parking place at the mall as you go in to spend money Osteen’s god has sent you because you are “favored” to have your best life now.

The watering down of the Word and of His doctrines and of a solid Christian life makes me shake my head. Bending my knees I ask the Lord to sweep us up to Him, because the faithlessness in His name is unbearable.

Two State Solution is dead, in comes the One State Solution

By the time of the Tribulation, the bible shows us, world hatred of Israel and His People will be an an all-time high. ‘Higher than WWII and the Holocaust?’ you ask. Yes. That’s because the Tribulation will be a time when evil is allowed to prevail.

“He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.” (Revelation 13:7) and of course this verse refers to the antichrist.

The run-up to that time will be similar to the Holocaust, where hate rises incrementally, slowly at first but then rapidly. As in the years and days prior to WWII, there were attitudes preached and promoted, laws passed, and doctrines set which cultivated hatred against Jews. It is the same now. ‘But surely Evangelical Christians who know the bible and understand how important Israel is to God and the world will not abandon her?!’ you may wonder. Yes, they will. It is happening now. Here’s why.

Part of the problem in evangelical circles is the acceptance of amillennialism and Replacement Theology. Before WWII, it took years for anti-Semitism to come to full fruition so evilly that it caused the historical actions that now draw a gasp that they even occurred. The anti-Semitism was there, bubbling and percolating until it burst full force like pus from a boil.

Replacement theology teaches that the church has replaced Israel in God’s plan. People who believe in Replacement Theology believe the Jews are no longer God’s chosen people, that the covenant is either fulfilled or abandoned, and that God does not have specific future plans for the nation of Israel.

This is a dangerous belief, because it unhinges our actions from the covenant which God told to Abraham: “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:3). Israel is the world’s fulcrum. If there is no Israel, there is no cause and effect, it becomes a flat playing field.

Amillennialism is just as devastating a doctrine to hold, both for Israel and for the Nations, because it leads to the same outcome: a disbelief that God means what he says and that Israel no longer matters. Amillennialism is the name given to the belief that there will not be a literal 1000-year reign of Christ. Though many, many scriptures speak of this earthly reign in specific and dimensional terms, amillennialists say that it won’t happen, or is happening now, of has happened in the past, or is a spiritual event, not a physical one. In sum, it is a belief that the Kingdom is figurative.

What these dangerous doctrines add up to is a vacuum in the plan of God where He blanketed the world with His demonstration of love for His chosen people and the warnings that come with harming them. People groups en masse are withdrawing their belief in these things and therefore support for Israel erodes. Nature abhors a vacuum and satan is only too happy to fill it with hatred. Look at the Tribulation time, when evil is allowed to prevail: satan comes at them full bore. Revelation 12:13-17 shows us the moment that satan is banished from heaven. In his anger, for he knows he has but a little time, he persecutes Israel, and failing that, he turns his evil anger on Christians. (Revelation 12:13-17).

Let’s take a look at the world today and do a barometer check for love of or hatred of Israel.

You know that for many years, the peace process in the Middle East hinged on instituting a Two State Solution. This means that attempts were made to diplomatically enact a state whereby the “Palestinians” and the Israelis could live side by side in peace in a mututally acknowledged state. The two-state solution envisages the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel.

You know that recently it has been reluctantly acknowledged that the Two State solution has failed. It is diplomatically and in all other ways defunct because in general the whole peace process is dead.

Now here is an axiom. I made this up. Because we are in the last days of the last days, because evil is rising and will be allowed to come to complete fruition, things are not going to get better. When one thing passes away, a worse thing will replace it. That is my axiom.

And we have an example of that: the Two State Solution has passed away, and now we have calls for a ONE-State solution. Here are a few examples from the last two weeks:

‘One-state solution’ campaign promoted in West Bank
“A recently launched campaign in the West Bank calls on Palestinians and Israelis to desert the two-state solution and form one democratic state in its place. This coordinated effort comes in wake of the negotiation freeze between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. A group by the name of Takamul (“Integration”) seems to be the campaign’s chief sponsor. Posters calling for “one democratic state for five million Arabs and six million Jews” were hung in Palestinian cities across the West Bank.”

Christ at the Checkpoint” conference is a misguided attempt to defend Palestinians
“Certain segments of evangelical Christianity are being drawn away from the movement’s traditional support for Israel by those claiming the moral high ground in advocating for “social justice.” Many of these liberal, anti-Israel Evangelicals are showing up at the “Christ at the Checkpoint” conference in Bethlehem this week. They invariably view Israel as an occupying power oppressing the Palestinians. They use Israel’s security “Wall” as a prominent symbol of the “injustices” being committed against the Palestinians. One has to admit that the imagery is powerful and it takes well informed minds to counter them.”

“The lack of information has started to dupe many Evangelicals, who are being shamed into abandoning Israel because they are supposedly uncompassionate and blocking peace. Indeed, this new initiative aims to totally discredit pro-Israel Evangelicals with clever lies and distortions. As David Solway recently observed in this paper, “The usual understanding of Israel as an aggressive, colonial, apartheid state robbing the Palestinians of their heritage is quite possibly the greatest political scam of modern times. It is the outcome of a mixture of historical amnesia, ideological prejudice and reflex hostility, which keep it mind-proof.”

The above excerpt from the Jerusalem Post refers to a conference being held in Bethlehem right now which targets Christian evangelicals, and proposes a one state solution.

Harvard to host conference of hate
“Harvard University is going to be hosting a conference entitled “One State Conference: Israel/Palestine and the One State Solution,” scheduled to take place March 3-4. According to the “Vision and Goals” of the conference, as outlined by its website:“To date, the only Israel/Palestine solution that has received a fair rehearsal in mainstream forums has been the two-state solution. Our conference will help to expand the range of academic debate on this issue. Thus, our main goal is to educate ourselves and others about the possible contours of a one-state solution and the challenges that stand in the way of its realization.”

The conference was sold out.

And this from Ammon News (Jordan)

A Declaration from Beit Sahour calls for One-State Solution
(Beit Sahour is a town near Bethlehem, Israel, and is reputed to be close to the place where, according to the New Testament, an angel announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds.)

“If a two-state solution is not workable or achievable, the logical conclusion would inevitably lead to a one-state solution. The general view in the Middle East is that the relentless proliferation of settlements throughout the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 has made the very concept of creating a viable Palestinian state, let alone one with East Jerusalem as its capital, unrealistic if not far-fetched.”

The article continues, and get this–

“Declaration from Beit Sahour:
“A group of pro-peace activists based in the Bethlehem area of the West Bank in conjunction with a number of international activists the most prominent of whom is Roger Higginson, a London based international negotiator and a member of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolition (ICHAD) are promoting a one-state for two nations. Their collaborations resulted in a “Declaration from Beit Sahour” which calls for a one-state solution. Beit Sahour is a Palestinian Christian town close to Bethlehem. Higginson is a firm believer in a single state for all the inhabitants of historical Palestine. Higginson believes a single state should not represent a threat to the Jewish citizens of Israel. Both communities lived in peace in the past, and there is no inherent reason why they cannot do so again today.”

Do you see the progression here? Israel is surrounded on all sides spiritually and geographically. It is dealing with external pressure from the ancient enemy to dismantle their state. And make no mistake, a “One State Solution” is really a call for the dismantling of Israel. Israel is dealing with attacks at their most supportive base: Christian Evangelicals, targeting them both in the US and within their own borders. This widening gap between Jews and Christians in politics, geography and belief will come to fruition in the Tribulation- a lonely and alone Israeli State…

“For indeed I will raise up a shepherd in the land who will not care for those who are cut off, nor seek the young, nor heal those that are broken, nor feed those that still stand. But he will eat the flesh of the fat and tear their hooves in pieces.” (Zechariah 11:16).

That ‘Worthless Shepherd’ is the antichrist. (Zechariah 11:17). The conditions upon which those conditions will be fulfilled are rapidly coming together. When Israel cannot trust the American president nor count on support from Christian Evangelicals, when Israeli postmen refuse to deliver New Testaments, where the population of the very town where the Angels announced Jesus’ birth turns against its own heritage and homeland, you know that their last bastion of support is almost eroded.

This is because it must be so. As Israel faces an increasingly hostile world, she will be forced to stop looking around her for support, and instead look UP. (Zechariah 12:10). And God will show Himself holy to the world, defend His nation and His people, and amillennialists and replacement theologians will see just how wrong they were.

“And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” says the Lord GOD, “that My fury will show in My face. … Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the LORD.”’ (Ezekiel 38:18, 23)

Praise God for His faithfulness! His Covenant lasts forever! His Kingdom will come!

UK Pastor rewrites Ten Commandments; AKA God needs an editor

De l’audace, encore de l’audace, et toujours de l’audace. This is a famous French saying from rebel Georges Danton who was whipping up fervor for the French Revolution. The full quote goes, “Pour les vaincre, messieurs, il nous faut de l’audace, encore de l’audace, et toujours de l’audace et la Patrie sera sauvée!” Translated, it means: “To defeat them, gentlemen, we need audacity, still more audacity, and audacity forever, and the Fatherland will be saved!”‘

One may think that the UK’s ‘popular evangelical pastor J John’ in the UK had coined the phrase. At the very least, he embodies it. He decided to rewrite God’s Ten Commandments. You know, the ones graven on stone by God Himself. J John thought they needed updating. What he is really saying by doing this is that God needs an editor.

“Using short, simple language interspersed with slang the new rules have now been released on a DVD… The Reverend Paul Roberts, 54, vicar of St John the Evangelist in Old Coulsdon, Surrey, which dates back to 1210 AD, is among those using the new commandments. He said: “It’s basically a way of presenting the Ten Commandments to help people connect with them in a positive way. “Rather than just seeing them as a list of things you shouldn’t do, it is meant to help people live as God intended for our good. “Unlike the dos and don’ts most people imagine when quizzed about the maker’s instructions, the message is meant to be both a challenge and an encouragement.”

Two ‘commandments’ are blank because the story is so new I haven’t be able to find a report that contains all ten edited ones. I’ll update as it fills in.

We’re still recovering from the Wycliffe scandal, whereupon the translators decided to substitute Allah for the name of God, and downplay Jesus as God to a position of Allah’s Messiah. I am not making that up. Read here, and here. This essay, “Jumping from the Sinking Wycliffe Ship: Why Theology Matters” provides an insider’s view (who resigned over the increasingly troublesome translation methodology at Wycliffe as it relates to Muslims) with specifics. It is worth reading.

Now God is being re-written and the commandments diluted. Apostasy is heightening to a sickening level.

Did you notice in the re-written commandments that they changed to positive works from man rather than an authoritative forbidden list from God? Man sure hates authority. That is ultimately the issue, all the way back to the Garden, and before, with satan. Satan rebelled against God’s authority. God is the first word and the last word, but satan wanted to exalt himself above that (Isaiah 14:13-14). Eve dispensed with the ONE commandment God had given (Don’t eat the fruit) and ever since, we have sought ways to substitute our own will for His commands. The above list accomplishes that.

It is one thing to endure a false doctrine, which is bad enough, but to change the commandments and to re-name God is unconscionable heresy. These are not one-person isolated incidents, either. The Wycliffe translating team has 6,600 short-term and career members. I do not know the numbers involved with the particular “Allah” translating debacle but it is safe to say that it is numerous, with the result that if the bible had continued to be translated that it would be sent to hundreds if not millions inside Muslim nations.

The re-written 10 commandments debacle also is a widespread apostasy. The UK Telegraph article says that the re-written commandments are being adopted by hundreds of churches throughout the nation, which affects thousands of congregants. It is safe to assume that the two incidents are not isolated, personal apostasies but rather widespread rejection of God’s authority affecting whole cultures.

Rebellion against God is increasing to an almost painful level. Jesus prophesied this. “Matthew 24:37-38: “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. “For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,” (Genesis chapters 6&7.) I interpret this to mean that everything is going on as normal in society until BLAM, the judgment cometh. The normal things are eating, planting, marrying etc- the foundational things that have always undergirded society. Therefore the time Jesus spoke of could be now.

The time just prior to Noah’s entry into the ark was the most evil time on earth that had or has ever happened to date. Gen. 6:11-12 “The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.”

What could be more corrupt than changing God’s name to a false God in His Holy word? Or re-writing the commands He has given us? The earth IS corrupt before God.

I’m so grateful, though, that He has a plan, and anyone who calls on His name for salvation will be saved from His plan, which is to punish the world and judge sinners. If you repent of your sins, calling on Him to save you from this punishment, He will. The punishment is coming, to earth, and when you die, you remain in punishment forever, in hell. You can escape all these things by repenting, and His anger at your sins will dissipate to love and forgiveness. His love is very real…but so is His anger at sinners who challenge His authority and rebel against it. Audacity and more audacity as Georges Danton called for, will not work. The Christian’s call should be Humility, more humility and humility forever! Why?

Our God: “For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.” (Psalms 86:10)

Tats for my hipster dude Jesus

Inking for Jesus: Dozens of church members take Lenten tattoo challenge
“In a hip, artsy, area of Houston, a hip, artsy pastor is taking an unorthodox approach to Lent. Standing in front of his congregation at Ecclesia Church, a congregation he admits is different – more diverse, more urban – than many evangelical churches – Chris Seay encouraged them to do so something he said combines the ideas of sacrifice and devotion that mark the Lenten season, the 40-day lead up to Easter. He asked them to get tattoos. Specifically, he asked congregants to get a tattoo corresponding with one of the Stations of the Cross, the collection of images that depict scenes in Jesus’ journey to his crucifixion. … To help with the project, Seay enlisted Scott Erickson, artist-in-residence at his church. … The Stations of the Cross depict Jesus from his condemnation to the Resurrection. The church is now displaying photographs of the tattoos in the church’s art gallery, in an exhibition called “Cruciformity: Stations on the Skin.” Initially, Seay has hoped that enough people – 10– would sign up to fill each station of the cross. But his expectations were far exceeded.Seay says that more than 50 people are now brandishing one of Erickson’s designs on their bodies. … Margaret Feinberg, an evangelical Christian author, spoke at the gallery opening. She said she was taken by the “beautiful blend of art and flesh.”

Let’s talk about Christians doing lent, Christians getting tattoos and a Christian Church mimicking the Catholic ‘Stations of the Cross’.

A good article is from GotQuestions: Is it OK to get tattoos if they are of a Christian nature? and it concludes–

“With that said, the biblically based conclusion would seem to be that Christian tattoos are permissible, but it is highly questionable whether they can be considered beneficial and constructive. A Christian considering getting a tattoo should pray for wisdom (James 1:5) and ask the Lord to provide pure motives and discernment.”

In my opinion it is telling that the Houston Ecclesia Church put up an art show about the tattoos, glorifying both the flesh and promoting commercial opportunities for the artist based on what was supposed to be a spiritual activity…

This is what I mean by a different Gospel. This church calls itself Christian, but they adopt pagan practices. Lent is from Roman Catholicism, [which is a false religion]. Stations of the Cross is from Roman Catholicism. [which is a false religion]. Lent is a forty day period between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Usually it is accompanied by some form of prayer and fasting. (source)

“Lent is not from the Bible. There is no such thing in the Bible. It comes from the mystery religions of the cults of Babylon and was connected with the supposed killing of Baal by a wild boar; and for forty days and forty nights, the priestesses and the followers of Baal mourned his death until, supposedly, he rose from the dead on the 40th day, and that is where Lent came from, and it has been superimposed on Christianity…” (source)

“I believe the 40 day period called Lent had its origin in Babylon and came into the Catholic church with other pagan traditions at the time the Church and the pagan Roman religion were merged, in the 4th Century. That’s why you won’t find Lent mentioned anywhere in the Bible. As to whether or not you should observe it, that’s a matter for your own conscience (Romans 14:5). If you use the 40 day period to reflect on what Jesus did for you on the cross and express your gratitude for His completed work, I think that’s appropriate. But any attempt to make yourself more worthy of your salvation by temporarily denying yourself certain things is just religious work and is of no value.” (source)

We know that adding to the Word will cause plagues and curses upon the speaker, (Rev 22:18) but lies of omission are just as blasphemous.

As an example, remember that when satan tempted Eve to take of the fruit and Eve balked because God had said that they would die, satan said, “You sill not surely die.” He was not giving the whole counsel of God. They did not die- physically. They did die- spiritually. Do you see how devastating satan’s lie of omission was?

Remember, nature abhors a vacuum. Remember, satan is sly and crafty. When preachers fail to preach the whole counsel of God, and when congregations cease diligent study of the whole counsel of God, then satan will fill that void with falsity, subtly at first, then increasingly, until you have what Ecclesia Church did- glorification of the flesh. The Holy Spirit is within us, because His work is to regenerate us from the inside out. That regeneration is supposed to show as Light and Salt, not tats for Jesus. (Matthew 5:13-16). He is sealed within us, we don’t need tattoos on the outside to remind us that we are Christians. What, like 40 years from now, the Christian will forget he is a Christian but will remember if he looks at his tattoo? Though tattoos are currently trendy, we are not supposed to be of the world. (Romans 12:2, 1 John 2:15). Therefore, permanently marking our flesh ‘for Jesus’ in my opinion serves no fruitful purpose.

Paul says to Timothy, “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” (2 Tim 4:2-5)

Those are good words. Paul also said to pray without ceasing and those are good words too. Pray for your pastor. Pray for your leaders. Pray for your teachers, elders, deacons! Pray for each other. This essay, ” The best thing you can do for your pastor” gives advice in praying for him, and what to pray, too. And please, don’t get ‘inked for Jesus.’

‘God is coming – look busy’, says Early Doors Eurosport blog

God is coming – look busy
“According to dusty religious scripture, God’s return will be preceded by Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse inflicting untold misery across the land. But Early Doors took a peek out the window this morning and couldn’t spot any signs of war, disease or pestilence, at least no more than you would expect in the poky corner of south-west London it inhabits. Which is strange, because God is most certainly returning. Don’t worry, ED hasn’t joined an apocalyptic cult in anticipation of an imminent rapture, with beakers of Kool-Aid at the ready and hundreds of disciples in tow – but have you heard the good news? Robbie Fowler — nicknamed God by Liverpool fans, and part-time horse racing enthusiast and landlord extraordinaire — is signing for Blackpool.”

How about that. God is coming. And he is an aging UK footballer.

The man has been retired for 4 years but this was one of the last sports articles about him in 2006 before that current article above was published:
Liverpool – City of God
“The second coming was complete on Wednesday when for the first time in over four years Robbie Fowler ran on to the Anfield pitch as a Liverpool FC player. … Few players have endeared themselves to the supporters in quite the same way as the 30-year-old did during his first spell at Liverpool. His 171 goals in 330 appearances earned him the nickname ‘God’ from his legions of admirers. “

And here I thought all this time the City of God was Jerusalem.

Hopefully if you are reading this you will be a saddened as I am at the cavalier application of the Most High’s name to an aging footballer well liked by his fans. You will know and understand the blasphemy. Do they really not understand what they are doing when they say stuff like this?

Let’s take a look at the Third Commandment. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.” (Exodus 20:7). Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry has a good article on the subject. I encourage you to read it, it is short.

God’s name is holy, and it was given to us by Himself. It identifies who He is, the one and only God. To adopt that name for casual purposes, for example, to express surprise or anger is a gross misuse of the fullness of His name for an empty purpose.

To use that name for one’s self or even to accept it without refutation when it is given to a person by others is idolatry in the highest sense. When Paul and Barnabas were in Lystra and they had performed a miracle, the people prepared a sacrifice to them and called them gods. Paul and Barnabas were horrified and tore their clothes and shouted to the crowd not to do it. (Acts 14:11-18). But Fowler was called THE God? And for people to scream accolades and honors to that false ‘god’ as the footballers did? How empty and vain, how unholy.

As for believers, let us be careful about using His name. Refresh our minds with the commandment not to take it uselessly. After all, it is God’s saving name: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). It is the highest name: “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name…” (Philippians 2:9). When we utter the name of God out loud, whether it be God or Jesus or Holy Spirit or Yeshua or LORD/Lord…whatever appellation you use when you speak of Him, do it with honor and dignity, praising that name above all names.

Some Sunday encouragement

I know this week has been longer on commentary and explanation and shorter on news. I try to embed the news in both an explanation and a lesson of how to see the world from an eternal perspective.

Apostasy is rising so quickly it takes my breath away. Apostasy is a falling away from the truth. Many people are now falling, falling under the sway of false doctrines, or are worshiping idols, or are simply walking away from Jesus. It seems sometimes that everyone is falling away. Apostasy is a poison that hurts the brethren, tornadoes are a disaster that wrecks lives, failing economies pillage the pocketbook … but the Lord has a trumpet that will never sound retreat!

Everyone is not falling away. If we take a peek at the larger picture we see glorious multitudes on earth who are in Jesus and walking in the faith. He is the victor and we who are under His wings are victors with Him. Be peaceful, knowing His plan is amazingly unfolding day by day, week by week, year by year. And blessedly, we are of a generation that is part of it and watching it happen. If we are repentant and strong and vigorous for His name, we will be used as part of His plan! Picture the even greater multitudes in heaven who are eternally in Jesus and eternally walking in the faith. Think on the unknown people you have influenced in Jesus’ name that you will meet in heaven on that golden street. Think of how we will be talking with saints from all nations, tribes, peoples and tongues about how Jesus worked in your life, praising Him as you sit under His light that illuminates the New Jerusalem!

When we see all those who have been saved because of His death and resurrection, the multitudes and multitudes over the ages, it will be such a praise to Jesus. Each person in that vast sea of peoples are a glory to the One who saved them. Each person is a living drop of grace that fell as His blood was shed from the cross. Each person is an emblem of the intra-Trinitarian delight the Creator, Jesus and the Spirit have with each other, who then turned outward to share His delight with a people made in His likeness. When your hearts fail and your faith weakens, picture the sea of people shining in heaven, so many that the rows of them undulate like a marching army over the hills of time. And all because of Him.

Is your praise louder than the tornado’s roar?

It is a sober morning as we wake up and as the daylight rises we see the overnight storm damage. I had a sleepless night as storm after storm rolled through, but the house is intact. I’m thankful for the Lord’s protection. Now one may say, ‘what about all those believers who prayed but whose homes were destroyed? Didn’t they have the Lord’s protection?’ Yes, they did.

In my case, I prayed to the Lord for protection of my body and my home from storm damage. I have full faith and trust that He would do it, and He did.

Others who pray the same in full faith but whose homes are now rubble are also under His protection. The effects of sin in this world means that there will be suffering, but those who are suffering have a new opportunity this morning to turn to Him, and think of eternal things. It affords an opportunity for Christian ministries to minister in His name to the lost, the weak, the brethren. Living in a fallen world means bad things will happen.

I prayed for protection last night and I knew He is able to deliver it. But I did not pray, “Protect me, O Lord, for I am one of your children and You are on my side.” That is testing the Lord. I know His will as it is revealed in the Word, but I do not know His will in each specific circumstance of my life. If I was to go through a trial by enduring a lost dwelling and possessions, let it be so. It doesn’t alter my faith at all. When you have an eternal perspective, the temporary circumstances of my life gain their proper position. Now I’m not as strong as Paul who said of his trials, “Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:10) but his kind of attitude is my daily goal to seek and try and reach.

I think of Daniel 3 and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego standing in front of King Nebuchadnezzar, and they said, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up” (Daniel 3:16b-18).

The furnace was a room sized furnace you know. Picture the men shoveling coal into the Titanic’s room-sized boilers, and that was what Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were facing. These furnaces were searingly hot. They were so hot that when the King ordered the furnace to be heated 7 times hotter, the men who were ordered to throw Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego inside were instantly killed by the heat.

Facing that, they did not waver. They did not say, “We are faithful and therefore He will not let us come to harm.” Their prayer in the face of a fiery trial was strong, with the proper perspective of understanding that it may not be His will to allow them no harm. It didn’t alter their faith one bit. He knew He would cover them, but if He didn’t, that was OK too. God is still sovereign.

“The proof of conversion is that he who professes faith in Jesus perseveres in faith and grows in sanctification throughout his life.” ~Paul Washer

That proof is the perseverance in faith especially when storms are ripping through, when death or loss or injury come, when we can say of this trial or that one, “Lord grow me in sanctification so that You are pleased with me.” Sing praises to Him who saves, in the calm and in the storm. Their faith was startling to the King, and  Nebuchadnezzar replied in a fury. But when God chose to show Himself in the furnace the men said to the King, “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” (Daniel 3:25).

The King then did what? Praised God. “Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His Angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God! Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; because there is no other God who can deliver like this.” (Daniel 3:28-29)

When the storms come, sing louder, knowing that He is sovereign, and all things are working for the good to those who love Him who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) Perhaps your purpose in your trial is simply to sing praises to him, louder than the storm, so that others may hear and believe.

Can children be possessed by a demon?

Someone asked me this week if a child could be demon-possessed. There are occasional cases in the news where a possession seems to be a central focus, or there exists a problem with a child or youth that medicine or psychology cannot solve. So the question was asked. Clearly, every tantrum a two year old throws isn’t a demonically inspired rant. Often, medicine or therapy can aid the child who is exhibiting symptoms of uncontrollable behavior, and demonic possession is not indicated. But cases where a spiritual problem is the root cause do happen and as John MacArthur says below, “I think much more common in the world today than we understand or the demons want us to understand.”

Medieval illumination

People are  fascinated with the demonic. I was riveted when I read the scene with Jesus and the Gadarene demoniac. (Mark 5, Luke 8, Matthew 8). Just as we are fascinated with the physics and biology of how the Holy Spirit indwells Christians, we are equally fascinated with how it works when a non-believer has a demon inside him. We love to get glimpses of the other side, of the heavenly glories and also of the demonic.

MacArthur preached a sermon called Jesus’ authority over demons, and in it he stated, “And as I said last time, the victims of demon possession are not necessarily the most evil people, sometimes children were possessed, as we shall see in the New Testament. And they’re not to be confused with people who somehow aren’t functioning normally, mentally, because every time Jesus confronted a demon, the conversation was always comprehensible and rational cause you’re dealing with a rational being in dealing with a demon. Somebody who is completely spaced out, flipped out, incomprehensible, talking double talk, nonsense is…you’re probably not engaging a demon.”

In the scenes in the bible where a demon is present, whether inside a human or as a spirit, we see that they are vocal. In 1 Kings 22:19-23, a lying spirit came forward when God inquired of them how Ahab should be brought to the fullness of his iniquity. The lying spirit spoke aloud and had a rational conversation with God. You often find that when the demons speak, they are rational, lucid. The slave girl following Paul around had a spirit of divination in her and she kept shouting, “These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.” (Acts 16:14-21). Not wanting satan’s publicity, Paul commanded the demon to come out of her, and it did that very moment. But she was shouting rationally, and what she was shouting was true.

I’ve often mused about the impact to our biology when we as Christians host the Holy Spirit inside us and when a non-believer hosts a demon. We don’t know what it feels like to have the Spirit leave us, because He is sealed within us, (Eph 1:13, 2 Cor 1:22). And we don’t know how it felt to have the Spirit come into us. He is gentle, merging seamlessly and painlessly into our body. But when a demonic spirit enters or leaves an unsaved person’s body, it often is recorded that it rips and splits the biology. Going in and coming out are hard on the person. While it is in there, they could cause the human host to cut themselves, they are thrown about, they are caused to scream till hoarse, hurl themselves into the fire, and other biologically hurtful things. Sometimes they are seemingly calm, like when the slave girl was following Paul, but the bible says she was shouting, not speaking. When it is time to leave, demons don’t go willingly, as we see in the scene of the Gadarene demoniac. When they left the man they went into the pigs, who immediately went mad and hurtled down the hill and drowned in the lake.

Doing a study from the bible on all the instance of demons inside a person or oppressing a person would be interesting. Look at the person they harass or possess, and their biology. What changes do they cause to their human host physically? Mentally? Emotionally? How do they go in or come out of a person? Do they speak, and if so what do they say, and why? How do they interact with Jesus or God? Those are a few of the ways one could approach a study of the subject.

As to the question of whether children could be demon possessed, first we look to the bible to see if there are any instances of demon possession in children. Is this thing even possible? Always, brother and sister, go to the bible first when a question comes up. We could read books on the subject, but nowadays so many books are fraught with error that I hesitate to recommend even one. So, if child possession is even possible, what does the bible have to say about it?

The bible records several instances of demonic possession. Matthew 9:32-33; Mt 12:22; Mark 5:1-20; Luke 4:33-36; Luke 22:3; Acts 16:16-18.

As a matter of fact, Jesus and the disciples spent a good deal of time exorcising demons and dealing with harassing demons. But were any of them children? Yes. There are two recorded instances of demonic possession in children. In one, the demon-possessed is referred to as a boy, and in the other, the possessed person is referred to as a daughter, later as a child. So we take from these facts that it is possible for demons to inhabit children.

In this example the father said of his boy that his son has been possessed “since childhood”:

“Mark 9:14-29– “And when He came to the disciples, He saw a great multitude around them, and scribes disputing with them. Immediately, when they saw Him, all the people were greatly amazed, and running to Him, greeted Him. And He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?” Then one of the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.” He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.” Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

“When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.””

The demon’s exit was so horrific, the boy was as dead. I’d surmise that the demons want to do so much damage that though they must obey the voice of God, they shred as much flesh as they can on their way out.

In the second case of a demon-possessed child, it is recorded in Mark 7:26-30; “The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.” She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

So a boy and a child are shown to be possessed by a demon. The answer to the original question is “yes.” MacArthur expounded in his sermon ‘Food from the Master’s table‘.

“Now she [the mother] has a problem. She kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. She kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. Matthew says the demon was an unclean spirit…an unclean spirit. In a sense, all demons are unclean. Demons are fallen angels who operate in the kingdom of darkness. They indwell unbelievers. This is a little girl. This is a young girl, an unmarried girl under the age of twelve, thirteen, when people got married. Who knows? Eight, nine, ten…seven…who knows? A demon-possessed child. Horrific experience for a mother. I think much more common in the world today than we understand or the demons want us to understand.”

I agree with this statement. Demons are still around. They possess people, adults and/or children. Their presence on earth increased as Jesus first came to earth and their presence will increase in advance of the second time Jesus comes to earth.

MacArthur again:
“Demons can take up residence in non-believers and they did that in an escalating fashion during the time of Christ, at least they manifested it in an escalated fashion. As I said, they like to stay hidden but under the confrontation of Jesus, they just literally blew their cover. They were just traumatized.”

The next logical question comes, “How could God do this to the innocent children!” But that is a false question. He doesn’t do it to people, sin and satan’s evil causes demon possession. And I often get a reply like, “OK, well, how could He allow it, then?! They’re children!”

We have to remember that the world is corrupt. Rather than see the “badness” of God, see the evil of sin and its corrupting effects. Society’s most vulnerable are not immune to the ravages of evil in the form of demon infestation. We may live in a beautiful place with green grass and swaying pine trees and undulating blue ocean, with stars twinkling overhead, and all that is beautiful to be sure. But creation groans for release from the evil that permeates it. We humans are corrupt too, Christians are only cleansed because we are saved by the blood of Jesus.

It is a fallen world and all societies that try to create civilization in this fallen world fail. Society’s most vulnerable are always most vulnerable. Children, the weak, the lame, the mentally retarded, all vulnerable. Herod killed thousands of children under the age of two because he feared the new King spoken of by the Wise Men. Imagine being that Roman soldier, given a duty to stab babies.

In Ezekiel 5:10 the siege went on so long the people began to eat their children. Children are passed into the fire of Molech. The Old Testament records many such atrocities against children. God allows people their sinful desires and the outcome of those are evil. However, He is always working within our society for the good! What mans sinfully creates as an evil, He turns to the Good.

Remember, He also offers a remedy to those who are lost. We do not have to remain vulnerable to demonic possession. He offers His Son and showers unto us grace through Him. If one repents and accepts His salvation, then one will not be vulnerable to demon possession, not you or your house. Being saved, walking with the Lord, raising up your family in Godly statutes means you are likely to be harassed, but with prayer and constant repentance and bible study, you will recognize demonic attacks when they come- and have the faith to oppose them.

The day is coming when no more atrocities against any person, especially children, will occur ever again.

Here is a final thought from the sermon I quoted earlier, “The point of the text is that Jesus meets this demon-possessed situation and totally dominates the demon. The demon panics under the preaching of the gospel because the gospel raids the kingdom. The gospel steals the man that he’s living in and plying his wicked influences and so the demon panics under the preaching.”

“Let me tell you something. People run around, “I cast you out, I bind you,” that doesn’t do a thing to any demon anywhere, anytime. If they laugh, they laugh at that…exorcisms, human manipulations, like Acts, you know, the sons of Sceva going around…they were Jewish exorcists, you know, they had these little incantations, chants and formulas and the demon said, “Jesus we know, and Paul we know, but who are you? We’re not impressed.” Basically. They shudder not under human manipulation, they shudder under the power of the gospel because the gospel goes into the kingdom and raids it. The gospel goes into the house, ties up the strong man and plunders his goods. That’s what smashes their fortresses. I said, that’s…that’s what frees the souls of their captives and brings them to Christ.”

The captives could be adults or they could be children.

The Gospel. It always comes back to the Gospel. Jesus saves. He is the Victor over sin and death. With His Spirit indwelling us, the demons cannot enter. Glory to Him in the highest!
