Why did God give no miracles to John the Baptist to perform?

By Elizabeth Prata

We are going through Mark’s Gospel at church. Mark opens with a reference in Isaiah to the Forerunner to the Messiah and (briefly, as Mark is wont to do) describes John the Baptist.

File:Mathis Gothart Grünewald 024.jpg

Do you realize that John the Baptist performed not one miracle? As a matter of fact, until Jesus came and changed the water into wine at Cana, no miracle had been performed in Israel for 800 years! Not since the time of Elijah and Elisha. No prophet had spoken to Israel as the messenger of God for 400 years, not since Malachi! No angel had appeared to the people (as far as we know) for 500 years!

So why was the greatest man who was born of woman until his time, (Mathew 11:11) and who was one of the greatest (and most successful) Old Testament prophets never been given the power to perform one miracle?

Above, Matthias Grünewald, detail of the Isenheim Altarpiece, “He must become greater and I must become less“.

I have no great insight, no commentary I’ve used, and no sermon I can point you to. I just want to focus on the holy Word of God and its effect on hungry, despairing hearts.

John the Baptist was a forerunner to the Messiah, one who was prophesied to come and who did come. (Isaiah 40:3-5; John 1:23). He had one message and one message only: repent and be saved. (Matthew 3:2; Mark 1:4). One would not think that a man with a singular message of sin, sinners, repentance and baptism would be popular.

Giovanni Tiepolo: John the Baptist preaching

Men who preach that are not popular today. But John the Baptist had throngs of followers who listened to him. He had throngs who followed his preaching with a life choice to become baptized in water, in preparation for the Messiah’s coming when they would be baptized by fire. Even King Herod liked to listen to John, even though John was no shirker of his responsibility to point out to the King his sinful actions! (John 6:18).

Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.” (Matthew 3:5-6).

Of course, some undoubtedly followed John because they loved hearing him charge the religious leaders of the day with hypocrisy. Some undoubtedly followed John because he was the most interesting thing going on. Some undoubtedly were excited to think of their Messiah coming in all glory to rip the Romans from the death-grip they had on the land.

The fact is, John was filled with the Holy Spirit at birth, and a man speaking truth about the Messiah from a pure, Holy Spirit-filled heart is a powerful miracle in itself. John was forerunner to the One would perform miracles.

You can read about how demon-drenched the place was. (Luke 6:17-19). No prophet had spoken. No angel had come. No miracle had occurred. The religious services were saturated with hypocrisy, filthy lucre, and idolatry thanks to the failure of the leaders of the day and the years before and the generations preceding. The people were tired of sin- their own and others’. The whole land was crawling with demons.

St John the Baptist Preaching, Gaulli

So they listened.

In my opinion, John’s ministry was miraculous in the way that it shows us what preaching the word does to weary hearts. Weary hearts want the word. They want to hear about the Messiah. They want hope of His coming to enter their hearts and fill them with knowledge of His glory.

Their hearts were hungry for message of hope, and even for a message of hard truths; a message of their sins and the hope of the coming of the Perfect who would deliver them.

You can imagine how hungry hearts are today. And as it was true then, it is true now: the preaching of repentance and the coming of the Messiah prepares us for Him.

Though our generations may or may not be blessed with national revival, but may instead be cursed with global apostasy, (Revelation 2:5; 2 Thessalonians 2:3; 2 Timothy 4:3-4), we know that individual hearts are still hungry. Individual hearts still thirst for the Living Water and we still need to proclaim it.

My wish for us all is that we resolve to cling to the Holy Word by diligent study, knowledge of, and living it out. I pray for us that we resolve to speak it, proclaim it, contend for it. His word, the holy Bible, is now the miracle that sustains us and is His sign that He is living and active. (Hebrews 4:21).

Do you know  it? Do you read it? Do you hide it in your heart for the moment the Spirit might prompt you to share a message of sin and repentance?

John the Baptist, by Preti, MetMusum

In most artistic renderings of John, he is shown with a hand or a finger pointing up toward heaven. Do we follow the example of John in pointing our lives toward Jesus? Do not seek after signs and manifestations, but rely on the sure word.

Isaiah said that one like John would come–

A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.” (Isaiah 40:3)

John did come.

He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” (John 1:23).

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)

The power of the holy Word has been demonstrated throughout the record of the bible. It has demonstrated itself through its staying power throughout the centuries. It has shown itself powerful by its ability to penetrate hard hearts and claim souls.

Do you know  it? Do you read it? Do you hide it in your heart for the moment the Spirit might prompt you to share a message of sin and repentance?

Artist- Mattia Preti  (1613–1699)

In most artistic renderings of John, he is shown with a hand or a finger pointing up toward heaven. My task for myself and my hope for all Christians everywhere is that we follow the example of John in pointing our lives toward Jesus. Do not seek after signs and manifestations, but rely on the sure word.

Above, John the Baptist, by Preti, MetMusum. “Saint John the Baptist is shown seated in the wilderness exhorting the viewer to repentance, his right hand pointing heavenwards, his skin tanned through years in the desert. The lamb stands for Christ, the “lamb of God.

Isaiah said that one like John would come–

A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.” (Isaiah 40:3)

The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight,” (Proverbs 11:5a)

Keep on the straight and narrow, and always point to Christ. “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:16-17)

Do you have a divided heart, or a whole heart?

By Elizabeth Prata

Hand to the plow, (or mower) look ahead, not back.
EPrata photo

Jesus at His zenith of popularity… Big crowds, laudatory accolades, and promises, promises by the naive:

And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:61-62).

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary says of that verse, “As ploughing requires an eye intent on the furrow to be made, and is marred the instant one turns about, so will they come short of salvation who prosecute the work of God with a distracted attention, a divided heart. … The expression “looking back” has a manifest reference to ‘Lot’s wife’.

"Who do you say that I am?"

Who is Jesus?

Is He a prophet? Is He Elijah? Is He a nice, moral man with a few good things to teach?

Who you say Jesus is determines your eternal destiny.

Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?” They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets“. (Mark 8:27-28)

What ho, Mormon, who is Jesus?

Mormons: “Mormons do not believe in the Trinity as we understand it. They believe that God and Jesus were separate physical people” who dwelled on the earth, [former Mormon Beth Johnston said. “God was Jesus’ father, and both men died“.

Muslims say Jesus (Isa) was a Messenger, a Prophet, not deity, never crucified.

As-salamu alaykum, O Muslim, who is Jesus?

O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say

not “Trinity” : desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. Quran, Chapter 4 The Women An-Nisa: Verse 171

Shalom, good Hebrew. Who is Jesus?

Judaism teaches that it is heretical for any man to claim to be God, part of God, or the literal son of God. The Jerusalem Talmud (Ta’anit 2:1) states explicitly: “if a man claims to be God, he is a liar.”

And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” (Mark 8:29)

The exclusivity of Christianity as the sole way to salvation is an eternal truth.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

Jesus is the Messiah, the promised One, the savior of all humankind.

And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 16:17)

Anyone who rejects Jesus as Messiah…King…Lord…Savior…Forgiver of sins, will not go to heaven. They remain in their sinful flesh, and will be damned.

I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. (1 Corinthians 15:50)

Between the sinful, perishable flesh, and the sinless imperishable kingdom which the gates of hell shall not prevail against, is a great gulf fixed–

And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ (Luke 16:26)

Except that while they are still living, you may cross from perishable to imperishable by and through Jesus, by confessing Who He Is.

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

Messianic Yeshua campaign causes buzz in Israel

And the toughest missionary field in the world is…Israel.

This is because God has partially hardened their hearts to His truth until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. (Romans 11:7-8, 25).

Nonetheless, God weeps over His rejecting people. Through Isaiah, He drenched Moab with His tears. In Luke 19:41-42, Jesus wept over His people Israel as He approached Jerusalem.

When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace!

They rejected the Messiah of peace, and to this day they are at enmity with God, in a hostile war between souls of sin and the Soul of holiness.

In that day, the people cursed His name! (Matthew 12:24, Matthew 27:23, 25). The very people whom He had healed and personally fed, wanted Him dead. The Pharisees sought to kill Him! (John 8:58-59; John 10:30-33).

Not much has changed since then, as evidenced by this interesting news article I read. It is from the publication Israel Today. The article in its entirety is extremely interesting as you read the flow and its context. Please read the full essay to get the full effect.

Radio Darom broadcasts in Israel and as usual with other radio stations, there are radio hosts and there are radio guests. On one such program, super conservative member of the Shas party, Ofer Karadi was appearing along with the deputy mayor of Beersheva and a local Jew for Jesus, AKA Messianic Jew. (who was not named in the article). Things, shall we say, got heated.

I’ll post a few quotes here:

Yeshua Campaign Causes Buzz in Southern Israel
While the gospel campaign by Jews for Jesus created a lot of buzz among local residents, not everyone was as sympathetic toward the Messianics as the general. “May his name be cut off forever,” screamed Ofer Karadi

His fervency and hatred is striking isn’t it? That is because it is demonic. (Genesis 3:15, Revelation 12:12, Revelation 12:17).

How can you give a platform for these empty-headed people,” cut in Karadi. “They are extremists. They are causing a civil war here in Israel!” (what this really means is that if Messianic Jews keep preaching the gospel in Israel, the orthodox will rise up with violent resistance).

Source

Have things changed? Not one bit. The LORD’S plan was set from the foundation of the world and He is enacting it in His sovereign timing and His sovereign will. Though the missionary field of Israel is a hard, stony place for His seed to grow, never forget He has left behind a remnant, elected by grace. (Romans 11:5). By His grace there are Messianic Jews proclaiming His name in His land! What a beautiful sight, even if is it met with spittle spewing Orthodox Jesus haters. This is not a surprise.

If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you… John 15:18-20a)

I praise the Lord for His remnant, for His people on a hard and rocky mission field. I praise the Lord for His tears, His love for the lost people, and for His future plan to bring them to His bosom. It is written,

And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,

“The Deliverer will come from Zion,
he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;
“and this will be my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.

Follow up to defective Christology: The Many Things and the Main True Thing

I’m listening to Denny Burk’s lecture in the CD ‘Drive By Pneumatology’ called, “The Regenerating Work of the Spirit.” Mr Burk gave a good analogy about Christ that I’d like to share. In speaking of Jesus in John 3:16 with the setting of Nicodemus and Jesus, Mr Burk,

“As the King sits before him, all Nicodemus sees is a good teacher. He can’t see the kingdom. He can’t see Jesus for who He is. Somebody may ask me at this point, ‘good gravy, Denny, is it really such a big deal that Nicodemus doesn’t see that Jesus is the King? Shouldn’t we give at least a little credit to him for at least seeing that He is a good teacher from God?’

“If I were to invite a certain famous person to speak to us here today, and since I invited him I would be responsible for introducing him. I might say, ‘Here is a man who graduated from Yale, and Harvard Business School. He is a former airman in Air National Guard, and he comes from an important political family, maybe you heard of them, the Bushes? He once ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Texas House of Representatives. After that he became an owner of the Texas Rangers!

Ladies and gentlemen please help me to give a big Texas welcome to George W. Bush.”

“If I was to introduce him like that, how would that be received?…  People would look around saying who is this idiot introducing the President? Why would they say that? Because it doesn’t matter how many true things I say about President Bush if I don’t say the main thing that’s true about about President Bush, namely, that he was former President of the United States! In fact all that other stuff is kind of piddly in light of the fact that he was the President and I probably shouldn’t even mention them.

If I leave that out it is not a bad reflection on the President, it just reveals to everyone how dimwitted I am. It doesn’t matter how many true things you see and believe about Jesus if you don’t see and believe the main thing about Jesus!

None of the rest matters unless you see that. You can see and believe that He is a great prophet, as the Muslims do. You can believe He is a good moral teacher as the Jews do. You can say He is loving and kind like almost every secular person believes. But if you fail to see that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, then none of the rest of the true things you believe about Jesus matters.

Newsweek depicts Obama’s second inauguration as the Second Coming of Christ

Well, this is just gross. Newsweek calls Obama’s next presidential term, The Second Coming.

I’ve discussed before that the Messianic language and pictorial representations of Obama abound. They have been foisted on us since 2007 when Obama first ran for President. He has been called Pharaoh (in the nicest, most king-y way), Messiah, and The National Groom. He has been depicted with halos, in crucified pose, as part of nativity scenes, and ministering to his adoring proselytes. He’s been called the New Hope, the Last Hope, and Hope and Change. He even discovered a likeness of himself on an Egyptian tomb. He’s been called the Healer-In-ChiefHe has been proclaimed savior outright. You can see many, many of the Obama halos here.

The Truth Michael Dantuono

One accidental depiction, OK. One wayward artist, fine. One lapdog photographer, I understand. But please note that the media has purposely and constantly presented this man as Messiah for five years. It is not an accident.

Obama says these things himself about himself. His campaign slogan was “Believe”. He said in NH in 2008, ““… a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany … and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama” (Barack Obama, Lebanon, New Hampshire, Jan. 7, 2008)”

OK, so those were the facts. The media, whose power to influence and reflect a skewed reality is immense, has for years shown us and told us Obama is a messianic figure here to save us. What does all this language and Obama-idols mean?

It means America (and parts of the world) are deep into idolatry. It also means that America (and parts of the world) have a monumental gullibility that satan will monumentally exploit. First, our nation’s gullibility.

The unsaved population is under satan’s sway. They will believe anything. The bible says that deception in the last days will abound.

–“while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.” (2 Timothy 3:13)
–“Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.” (2 Timothy 2:16)
–“and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.” (Matthew 24:11)
–“and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” (2 Thessalonians 2:10)

It’s clear, deception abounds to all those who refuse to believe the truth.

All the unsaved believe satan’s lie. The bible shows us that they are the most gullible people in the world, ever. That gullibility will find its final expression by the time Revelation 13 comes to pass:

“One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?” (Revelation 13:2-4).

“The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10)

Aside from the gullibility of the unsaved, at eternal risk from satan, the second meaning of all this Obama-worship involves idolatry. Credible watchmen and mature pastors recognize and preach Romans 1 in terms of the biblical statement on the downward progression of a society. Sexual sins and homosexuality/lesbianism are the benchmarks by which it is written that judgment comes.

However, let’s not forget the sin of idolatry. Idolatry will kill a society faster than you can say “Barak Obama”.

GotQuestions deals with the topic of idolatry: “The definition of idolatry, according to Webster, is “the worship of idols or excessive devotion to, or reverence for some person or thing.” An idol is anything that replaces the one, true God.”

And wouldn’t you know it, we’re right back to Romans 1 and read that the Omniscient Lord knew that our tendency is to worship the created and not the Creator.

Holman Standard says it well:

“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.” (Romans 1:23)

When people worship a person, whether it be Lance Armstrong sports star, or Oprah Winfrey media darling, or Hitler the political genius, or Obama the savior, they’re engaging in a most dangerous practice. When the majority of a society idolizes something or someone besides God and gives it worship, Romans 1 comes into play. What that means is, judgment looms.

Deluded Americans dangerously heap Godly worship unto Obama, who gladly accepts this false glory. What can one expect of a nation and/or an individual who do these things? Well, when Herod accepted Godly worship unto himself, he died.

“Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food. On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.” (Acts 12:20-23)

Nebuchadnezzar took the glory that was God’s and put it onto himself. And the judgment came and was swift:

“All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” While the words were still in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you,…” (Daniel 4:28-31).

It is a dangerous thing for a society to replace the one True God with any idol, whether it be persons living or dead, image or animal.

We are living in the Age of Grace. How wonderful to have a Savior who bestows so much grace to us while we are still sinners! Who even replace Him with craven images and sinning men! The Age of Grace is upon us!

Jesus is so wonderful. His grace abounds. You don’t have to believe the damnable lie, but bask in His grace and believe the truth. We worship the ONE God and no other. And with a God as glorious as He is, why would we need another?

“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” (1 Peter 5:10).

John the Baptist did no miracles: the Truth is the miracle

File:Mathis Gothart Grünewald 024.jpg

Do you realize that? John the Baptist performed not one miracle.

Men who preach that are not popular today. But John the Baptist had throngs of followers who listened to him. He had throngs who followed his preaching with a life choice to become baptised in water, in preparation for the Messiah’s coming when they would be baptised by fire. Even King Herod liked to listen to John, even though John was no shirker of his responsibility to point out to the King his sinful actions! (John 6:18).

Giovanni Tiepolo: John the Baptist preaching

“Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.” (Matthew 3:5-6).

But those were likely in the minority.

The fact is, John was filled with the Holy Spirit at birth, and a man speaking truth about the Messiah from a pure, Holy Spirit-filled heart is the most powerful miracle there is.

And as it was true then, it is true now: the preaching of repentance and the coming of the Messiah prepares us for Him

Though our generations will not be blessed with national revival, but instead be cursed with global apostasy, (Revelation 2:5; 2 Thessalonians 2:3; 2 Timothy 4:3-4), we know that individual hearts are still hungry. Individual hearts still thirst for the Living Water and we still need to proclaim it.

My New Year’s wish for us all is that we resolve to cling to the Holy Word by diligent study, knowledge of, and living it out. I pray for us that we resolve to speak it, proclaim it, contend for it. His word, the holy bible, is now the miracle that sustains us and is His sign that He is living and active. (Hebrews 4:21).

Can we resolve to focus on the coming Messiah? Can we dedicate our lives to serving Him? Can we devote ourselves to proclaiming the only message worth sharing? The power of the holy Word has been demonstrated throughout the record of the bible. It has demonstrated itself through its staying power throughout the centuries. It has shown itself powerful by its ability to penetrate hard hearts and claim souls.

Do you know  it? Do you read it? Do you hide it in your heart for the moment the Spirit might prompt you to share a message of sin and repentance?

In most artistic renderings of John, he is shown with a hand or a finger pointing up toward heaven. My New Year’s resolution for myself and my hope for all Christians everywhere is that we follow the example of John in pointing our lives toward Jesus. Do not seek after signs and manifestations, but rely on the sure word.

Left, John the Baptist, by Preti, MetMusum. “Saint John the Baptist is shown seated in the wilderness exhorting the viewer to repentance, his right hand pointing heavenwards, his skin tanned through years in the desert. The lamb stands for Christ, the “lamb of God.”

Isaiah said that one like John would come–

“A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.” (Isaiah 40:3)

John did come.

“He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” (John 1:23).

As we view 2013 ahead, we all feel like we are each in the wilderness as John was. I know many of us feel that we try and try but no one is listening. We know from the Word that as each year passes it won’t get better, it will get worse. But the truth does have an effect. It does penetrate hearts. Maybe you don’t see it right away but the fruits will become visible someday. That’s why we can’t lose heart and we have to stay true to Him. The Proverbs say for us-

“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)
“The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight,” (Proverbs 11:5a)

Keep on the straight and narrow, and always point to Christ. Here is a wonderful New Year’s gift to us all:

“And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:16-17)

Rejoice, Messiah has come!

Andrew and Simon Peter followed John the Baptist and when John pointed to Jesus and said to Andrew, “Behold the Lamb of God!” Andrew followed Jesus and brought his brother with him, saying–

“He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).”

In order to find something, you have to be looking for it. These two disciples were looking. They knew the Messiah was prophesied to come and they were waiting, praying, sacrificing, and hoping. They looked and they found. Seek and ye shall find … (Luke 11:9a).

The Greek word for ‘found’ as it’s used in John’s verse means, “I find, learn, discover, especially after searching.”

I pray you are searching for Messiah, too. Here are some of the precious names He is called in the bible:

King — “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” (Psalm 2:6)

God with us — “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)

Son of Man — “I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.” (Daniel 7:13-14). He is referred to by His own lips as that title about 80 times in the New Testament.

Star — “I see Him but not now, I behold Him but not near. A star shall come forth from Jacob, a scepter shall rise from Israel.” (Numbers 24:17)

Good Shepherd — “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. ” (John 10:11)

Redeemer — “‘A Redeemer will come to Zion. And to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,’ declares the Lord.” (Isaiah 59:20)

Any study of Jesus, even if it’s simply a list, would be comprehensive and overwhelming. He is so great, we can study about Him forever. And glory to God in the Highest, we who have repented and are counted as justified and sanctified, CAN and WILL study Him forever–

“Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.” (Psalm 119:89)

Merry Christmas!

Israeli MK Ben Ari tears up New Testament and throws it in trash

Missionaries in Israel proclaim the Gospel just like they do everywhere else on other mission fields. The issue is sensitive in Israel, though, and some laws have been passed to hinder distribution of mission materials, including the New Testament.

There is much tension regarding Christian missionaries who are proselytizing in Israel in and among Jewish people. After all, Israel is the only nation in the world to have been established (again) on the basis of their religious heritage and not race, geography, economics or any other attribute.

This news article from June 2012 states,

Yad L’Achim Gets Missionary Ad Pulled from Israel Radio‘: ‘Quick action by Yad L’Achim forced Israel Radio to pull a cleverly disguised missionary ad from its Russian-language programming.”

Therefore there’s much open hostility by Jews against Christians, particularly against “Messianic Jews.” Sometimes Messianic Jews are targets of terrorism from Jews just as much as Jews are targets from Muslims.

There is an enormous amount of suspicion and hostility leveled against Christian missionaries and evangelists. The website at Jewish Israel makes this statement:

“Due to the numerous political, economic and security hardships facing both Israel and the Diaspora, large sectors of the Jewish community in Israel have become dependent upon evangelical Christian political influence and charity. While much of this support appears to be benign and benevolent – and some is indeed sincere – Israel’s embracing and accepting of Christian fundamentalist sponsored activities and philanthropy has been exacting a serious cost and adversely affecting both religious and secular individuals and groups throughout the private and public sectors of Israeli society. Our Jewish values and heritage are being compromised.”

As most Christian Missionaries walk a fine line between hostility and acceptance, and as each mission field is fraught with its own particular demands and challenges to proselytizing, so it is in Israel.

In this article from the Israel daily newspaper Haaretz from 2010, we read of an “Aggressive Missionary Campaign in Central Israel

Note the language the reporter uses. It is snide, sneering, biased, and he makes frequent use of journalistic tricks like “scare quotes”. Here is a sample:

“Jews for Jesus” in Israel brags that it has launched a missionary campaign in “an area that has never had a significant evangelical activity since 1948” – namely, Tel Aviv’s satellite cities.” Uses the word brags.

“Different groups spoke Hebrew, English, or Russian, providing their “services” for all sectors.” The word services is in scare quotes.

“The missionaries’ latest gimmick is the placing of thousands of “traffic tickets” on cars”… the word gimmick is a bias word.

“Deceptive tactics of this nature have become the accepted protocol in the evangelical Christian movement, writes Rabbi Bentzion Kravitz”…deceptive and tactics are both heavily biased words that leave a taint in the reader’s mind.

“Rabbi Shalom Lifshitz said, “Now is the time to demand a change to the missionary law, and to put a stop to this wild, criminal missionary activity that leads to tragic results.”’

Needless to say, Christian Missionaries in Israel have a hard row to how.

And that brings us to the laws Israel has instituted to control, limit or even prevent missionary activity. Although the laws at present there appear to be only two laws being enforced which limit missionary activity in Israel:
1) No one can offer a material inducement for someone to change their religion
2) No one can discuss changing religion with a minor (under 18 years of age) without their parents’ permission,

…the facts on the ground are that there is much discrimination and hostility against missionaries and Christian materials. Make no mistake, when it is stated that there are laws and guidelines against missionaries, the focus is really on the Christian Evangelicals.

With this context in mind, here is an article reporting on how new testaments mailed to the Israeli Congress (Knesset) were reacted to. While most ‘quietly dispose’ of the materials, one Minister of Knesset reacted violently. This happened three days ago. Jerusalem Post reports.

“Many MKs opened their mailboxes on Monday morning and were appalled to find a New Testament inside, sent to them by a messianic organization. The Bible Society in Israel, a messianic Judaism institution for research, publication and dissemination of holy books, sent a “Book of Testaments,” which combines the Tanach and New Testament in one, leather-bound volume, published with references in Hebrew for the first time.”

Gasp! In Hebrew!

One MK in particular had a more violent reaction than others. He is Michael Ben Ari, acknowledged to be an extremist- on the Jewish side. The Hebrew daily newspaper Maariv reported Tuesday that Knesset (Parliament) member Michael Ben Ari deliberately tore up the New Testament and threw it in the trash. He posed for photos while he did it and then posted the pictures.

According to Maariv, the shipment of the “Christian holy book sent to all members of the Assembly with a blessing caused uproar. “MK Michael Ben Ari tore the pages of the book in protest and said: “This is a provocation. … He explained it: “This abominable book, motivated murder of millions of Jews Bainkoosetzih and centers of car-da-fe.” claims “a provocation of the Church missionary ugly, no doubt the place of the book and his handlers into the trap of history.”

That last excerpt was Google translated from the article. Google had a hard time with the Hebrew. But you get the idea. MK Ben Ari believes that Christian holy materials are a desolation to their religion, the catalyst for Jewish persecution, and a threat to their nation.

On Wednesday, there began the expected outrage against Ben Ari’s outrage. MKs are calling for Ben Ari to be censured. Israel has been battling perceptions of their low tolerance for Christian Missionaries for a long time (a perception that may indeed be warranted) that Ben Ari’s action only serves to highlight.

So why this hostility to the Christian witness? Usually the case is because of 2 Corinthians 4:34 which says, “And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

So it is satan who has blinded the non-believer’s mind. However, it is a little different for the Jew. In this case, it is GOD who has blinded them!

Paul wrote in Romans 11, “What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, as it is written,

“God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.” And David says, “Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them; let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.” (Romans 11:7-10).

He continues the thought in verse 25- “Lest you be wise in your own sight, I want you to understand this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.” (Romans 11:25).

Individual Jews can come to saving knowledge of Christ, as anyone can. Joel C. Rosenberg is a prominent example of one man with a Jewish heritage could accept by faith that Jesus is the prophesied Messiah. However, because they are partially hardened, Jewish individuals accept Jesus through massive odds. Widely, and as a nation, not at all. Not yet.

God is not finished with Israel. He will return His attention to them when the full number of the Gentiles is fulfilled (Rom 11:25) and deal with His rebellious but beloved people. In the end of the end of the Tribulation they will cry out to Him and accept Him as Messiah. (Zechariah 12:10). Jesus proclaimed, ““For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!’” ” (Matthew 23:39). They do, and He comes!

All Israel will be saved at the appointed time: “And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;” (Romans 11:26).

Blessed is our Lord who is mighty to save, mighty to preserve, mighty to remember. Until that time, the road ahead for Jews, Christians, and everyone else will be fraught with hostility and rising persecution and divisions. One thing we can do is be aware of the tensions, we can pray for missionaries in Israel, we can pray for the zealous but mistaken Jews like Ben Ari. We can pray for men like Ben Ari who hold in their hands the key to eternal life, the New Testament story of Jesus the Messiah, but continue to reject the Good News. We can praise Him for the missionaries who constantly attempt to get the News in front of all people in Israel using all methods at their disposal, whether spoken or written. We should plead with God to make these materials more widely distributed and more available. Because…they will soon need it.
