Volcanoes this week

Volcanoes are completely fascinating. Of all the hits I receive on this blog, by far the highest are always earth-related. An earthquake, volcanic explosion, or unusual geo-physical event like a ‘river turning to blood’ will draw the most people the quickest. They are looking for answers I suppose. And why not? We feel in our human puniness that the earth is large and stable. When the earth is shook in some way, demonstrating that it is not, people scurry to find answers that will offer some kind of stability.

I hope that they find the true answer, which is Jesus. He is the stability.

“my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.” (2 Samuel 22:3)

“For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat; for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall,” (Isaiah 25:4)

“To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

I’m fascinated by volcanoes. As an elementary student I remember reading about the Volcano in the Cornfield (Paricutin) that was suddenly born almost under a Mexican corn farmer’s feet. Paricutin is our continent’s youngest volcano. LOL, that was the first time I got a clue that the earth is not solid nor stable, and that anything could happen at any time.

They will play an important role in the UN-creation during the Tribulation. If you see the 7 days of Genesis 1 as God creating the world, then view the 7 years of the Tribulation as His orderly uncreation, a dismantling as it were. Genesis and Revelation are bookends of God’s human and heavenly creation and the story of our capacity to sin and His response.

I’ve mentioned before that the sun becoming black as sackcloth in Rev. 6:12 is from the ash spewed into the atmosphere from one or many volcano eruptions.

This week there has been a lot of interesting volcano news.

China’s Changbaishan volcano showing signs of increased activity
“The authors suggest that though Changbaishan is likely not gearing up for an imminent eruption, one could be expected in the next couple of decades.”

Volcanic activity on Spain’s El Hierro island resumes

Two volcanoes erupt in Indonesia
North Sulawesi, Lokon, and last week, Gamalama & Anak Krakatau also offered us some activity

UK Telegraph caption- “An image taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) of a large plume of smoke, steam and ash erupting from the Sarychev volcano on the Kuril Islands, Russia. It is thought that the eruption has caused a hole to form in the cloud layer above it.”

Tim Challies and others have remarked on a video making the rounds, with Challies commenting “The Lake of Fire – This is an nearly unbelievable video (more information here). “Photographer Geoff Mackley and his crew descended 1,300 feet to the ‘lava lake’ in Marum Volcano on Vanuatu’s Ambrym Island.” I can’t help but think of Revelation 20:15.”

Mike Leake at Borrowed Light had some eloquent thoughts on the volcano video. HT to Challies for pointing us to it. I’ll excerpt a few of Mike’s thoughts.

“In response to that video Tony Reinke shared this quote from Jonathan Edwards, “”The torrents of liquid fire that are vomited from the belly of hell, by the mouths of volcanoes, shadow forth what is in hell. … If the Almighty can create something this fierce who can stand when he is bent on destruction?   Only those who find refuge in the strong tower that El Shaddai has hoisted, namely the all-powerful Jesus, will find safety on that day. “

Once again, refuge is ONLY in Jesus.

A short news roundup: tornado NYC, Krakatau, Nicaragua volcano, Abbas and the PA

I’m in the throes of a lengthy series exploring Gnosticism and Paul’s response to it in Colossians. However, here is something shorter for those who are not interested in Gnostic errors and Christian apologetics.

“I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalms 89:1)

Remember the tornadoes that hit Venice Italy in June? Kind of weird to see tornadoes hitting some paces we dont’ usually expect. Well, today, tornadoes hit near NYC Coney Island and Rockaway, Queens.

Volcanoes, volcanoes, erupting everywhere. How about this volcano on a moon of Saturn, erupting water into the universe?

Nicaragua volcano belches ash cloud, residents evacuated
“Nicaragua’s tallest volcano belched an ash cloud nearly a mile into the atmosphere on Saturday, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of nearby residents who heard explosions emanating from its crater.”

Anak Krakatau spews volcanic ash, Tangkuban Perahu closed
“The volcanic discharge of Mount Anak Krakatau, which usually affects Cilegon in Banten and Kalianda in southern Lampung, has now reached the city center of Bandar Lampung, the capital of Lampung province, located around 75 kilometers from the mountain itself.”

Friday round-up: FL schools use biometric fingertip ID for attendance, millions bees drop dead, 7200 quakes/day at Krakatau, Yom Kippur begins

News round-up:

Anytime I see biometrics being used in a widespread way I take notice. Biometric identification “consists of methods for uniquely recognizing humans based upon one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral traits.” The antichrist uses biometrics in the Tribulation to keep track of who may buy or sell. (Rev 13:16-17).

A Florida School District is Taking Attendance by Scanning Students’ Fingers
“Chipley- Roll call is a thing of the past in Washington County Schools. Students now check in with finger scanning devices. School Superintendent Sandra Cook said the old method just wasn’t cutting it. “We got to talking about attendance in our district and how it was inconsistent,” said Cook. The systems have been up and running for two months inside the schools, but since the majority of students ride the bus every day, district officials decided to move the devices there. But the transition hasn’t been easy. One of the biggest challenges they’ve faced is where to put the devices on the buses. State safety codes require the isles to be kept completely clear, so one of the ideas they’ve discussed is to put a laptop on one side of the steering wheel and the finger scan system on the other. The school district plans to test the equipment in a handful of buses in the next week and hopes to have each one operational by November or December at the latest. “When it’s all said and done, we’re going to find that this is going to be one of the most monumental things that Washington County has ever done,” said Cook. The finger scan device costs the school district about $30 per student each year. Parents can still opt for their children to sign in the traditional way.”

No, the following does not have a typo in it. There has been an increase to 7,200 quakes a DAY at Anak Krakatau volcano. I always take note of earthquake activity and seismic increases. Quakes are one of the Lord’s judgments. (Psalms 18:15;60:2; Isaiah 13:13,14;24:19,20;29:6; Nahum 1).

The Lord said that prior tothe Great Tribulation, the beginning of birth pangs, there would be “earthquakes in diverse places…” (Matthew 24:7). For example, a “rare subsea quake rattled Bermuda this week. IWO has the report.

“The western Atlantic Ocean island of Bermuda, which was hit by its first earthquake in over a decade in April, has been rattled by two moderate quakes. The earthquakes, both measuring 4.5 magnitude on the Richter Scale, struck at 10:18 PM and 10:36 PM local time on Monday. The subsea quakes, the strongest to be recorded in the region in more than 20 years, were centred about 80 miles south of Hamilton, the capital of the British overseas territory.”

Not to be outdone, the world’s famous and not so famous volcanoes are waking up, also, with quakes of their own. I’ve written recently about the increase in earthquakes at El Hierro. 9,500 quakes under that active volcano since July and still going strong. There have also been huge numbers of quakes under Iceland’s Katla and under Krakatau. Irish Weather Online reports of Anak Krakatau, “Anak Krakatau’s alert level has been raised to the second-highest level after the number of volcanic tremors soared from 200 a day to 7,200. A 2-kilometre exclusion zone has also been established around the Indonesian volcano prohibiting tourists and fishermen from getting close to the volcanic island, located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.”

One of the Lord’s four sore judgments is beasts. (Ezekiel 14:21). One of the Seal Judgments is death by beasts. (Rev 6:8). This judgment is generally accepted to mean multiplication of beasts to plague the population, but I believe it also could mean the reverse, death of massive numbers of beasts so that the natural order of the cycles of growing and reaping and the balance of predator and prey is upset. My own speculations aside, millions of bees dropped dead in Florida at nearly the same time on the same day. No one knows why. They attribute pesticides as the cause of the deaths. Um, okay… By the way, the headline below from the Daily Mail is theirs in its original form-

The mysterious honeybee apocalypse: Up to 12 million bees found dead and dying in Florida and no one knows why
“Honeybee carcasses coated the ground around hundreds of Florida beehives after a mysterious massacre claimed millions of bees and mutilated a way of life for local bee keepers. Experts have ruled out ‘colony collapse disorder’ and the bee keepers suspect that their bees were poisoned with pesticide. Florida agriculture officials and the local sheriff’s office are both investigating. No one can tell yet what killed as many as 12 million bees from 800 hives this week in Brevard County, on central Florida’s Atlantic coast.”

Israel, more isolated than ever, “took an unusual and rare step, the IDF’s General Staff alerted two reserve divisions as part of an emergency drill in army bases in central and northern Israel. The purpose of the exercise was “to test the soldiers’ level of response and readiness for war. The IDF is taking no chances on the eve of Yom Kippur.”

Yom Kippur, “also known as Day of Atonement, is the holiest and most solemn day of the year for the Jews. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jews traditionally observe this holy day with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services. Yom Kippur completes the annual period known in Judaism as the High Holy Days or Yamim Nora’im (“Days of Awe”).” Israel is buttoned down, air space closed, and border crossings blocked. This is both so that the Jews can complete their religious duties and also to (hopefully) prevent attacks on their holiest day of the year.

This year Yom Kippur is from sundown Oct 7 to sundown Oct 8. “Yom Kippur commemorates the day that G‑d forgave the Jewish people for the sin of the Golden Calf. Forty days after hearing G‑d say at Mount Sinai: “You shall not have the gods of others in My presence; you shall not make for yourself a graven image,” the Jews committed the cardinal sin of idolatry. Moses spent nearly three months on top of the mountain pleading with G‑d for forgiveness, and on the tenth of Tishrei it was finally granted: “I have pardoned, as you have requested.”

Yom Kippur essentially begins ten days earlier, at Rosh Hashanah. “In Jewish thought, Rosh Hashanah is the most important judgment day, on which all the inhabitants of the world pass for judgment before the Creator. The Talmud states, on Rosh Hashanah that three books of account are opened on Rosh Hashanah, wherein the fate of the wicked, the righteous, and those of an intermediate class are recorded. The names of the righteous are immediately inscribed in the book of life, and they are sealed “to live.” The middle class are allowed a respite of ten days till Yom Kippur, to repent and become righteous; the wicked are “blotted out of the book of the living.” (Psalms 69:29). Eternal fate then hangs in the balance for ten days waiting for all to repent, then they will be “sealed” on Yom Kippur. The assumption is that at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, everyone was sealed for the next year.

Christians know that their fate is not sealed until the moment of death, or upon having rejected Jesus so many times that their heart has been hardened. (Hebrews 3:13; Acts 19:9; Mt 13:4-5). Jesus seeks all who would repent with a sincere heart, calling on Him who is Lord to forgive their sins. (Luke 13:3; Mt 12:30; Romans 10:9).

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9). We have a wonderful God, a loving and merciful God, who is worthy to be served.

Looks like Krakatau went bang (UPDATED)

UPDATE
Here is some more information about Krakatau, present and past.

Erik Klemetti (Professor of Geosciences at Denison University) wrote that the volcano “The volcano had been experiencing a very sharp increase in seismicity, numbering over 6,000-7,000 earthquakes a day (well above the background of 100-300 per day).” He said that quite a number of people had been writing him to alert him to the renewed activity at the volcano. This volcano holds the world’s attention for the reason that its 1883 eruption was one of the loudest and most globally-affecting events in historical times.

The volcano that exists today is actually called Anak Krakatau, or Son of Krakatau, because the cataclysmic explosion of Aug 26-27, 1883 destroyed the volcano completely. Anak has grown in its place.

The website “How volcanoes work” tells the story of Krakatau. “Early in the morning of May 20, 1883, the captain of the German warship Elizabeth reported seeing an ~11-km-high cloud of ash and dust rising above the uninhabited island of Krakatau, thus documenting the first eruption from this Indonesian island in at least two centuries. Over the ensuing two months, crews on commercial vessels and sightseers on charted ships would experience similar spectacles, all of which were associated with explosive noises and churning clouds of black to incandescent ash and pumice. From a distance, the largest of these natural fanfares impressed the local inhabitants on the coastal plains of Java and Sumatra, creating a near-festive environment. Little did they realize, however, that these awe-inspiring displays were only a prelude to one of the largest eruptions in historic times. A series of cataclysmic explosions began at mid-day on August 26, and ended on August 27 with a stupendous paroxysmal eruption. On this day, the northern two-thirds of the island collapsed beneath the sea, generating a series of devastating pyroclastic flows and immense tsunamis that ravaged adjacent coastlines. The events that began on August 26 would mark the last 24 hours on earth for over 36,000 people, and the destruction of hundreds of coastal villages and towns.”

The site How volcanoes Work has eyewitness accounts and gripping newspaper articles.

It unleashed one of the most violent explosions mankind had ever seen. The results of that explosion were that the ash spread over the equatorial belt over only two weeks, and stratsopheric effects such as bizarre sunsets and sun haloes and other effects lasted two years and were seen as far away as London. The global temperature dropped be several degrees. The sound of the explosion could be heard 3,000 miles away!

The area near Krakatoa was enveloped in a strange darkness, as dust and particles blasted into the atmosphere blocked sunlight. And as winds in the upper atmosphere carried the dust great distances, people on the other side of the world began to notice the effect. When Krakatau rumbles, the world takes notice. Interesting article here

Prophetically, one begins to see how these events of Rev 6:12-14 would unfold. John wrote- “I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.”

Since Krakatau’s explosion affected the entire world for years, and affected the optics regarding the sun and moon, one can understand how a bigger volcanic explosion accompanied by a tremendous earthquake at Krakatau, or any volcano, would produce the terrors described in the Revelation verse.

Son of Krakatoa, Anak Krakatoa, erupts
“Village of Mount Krakatau in Pasauran, Cinangka district, Serang regency, Banten, again increasing. Current status of the Son of Krakatoa are at level three alert, and experienced continuous volcanic earthquakes as much as 5773 times. Conditions that have occurred since Friday, September 30 yesterday, with a volcanic earthquake activity continued to increase until today. Elsewhere, conditions in the post monitors located in the Village Pasauran, a little overwhelmed to do the monitoring because of foggy weather conditions. According to the Head of Post Monitoring Child of Krakatoa, Anton, since the status of the Son of Krakatoa in three alert levels, volcanic activity continued to increase until today. (DSY)”

A busy week for volcanoes: and Krakatau is waking up

First Katla was having a quake swarm, then Merapi erupted, now Krakatau is showing signs of increased activity. From John Seach at VolcanoLive:

“Saturday 30th October 2010
Krakatau Volcano, Indonesia

Activity has increased at Krakatau volcano, Indonesia. Over the past 4 days there has been an increase in explosions at the volcano. Yesterday there were 136 eruptions at the volcano, compared to a recent average of 10 per day. Krakatau volcano has been raised to level 2 alert. Krakatau became famous after the paroxysmal eruption on August 27, 1883. The volcano erupted more than 18 cubic km of ash to a height of 80 km, and produced a tsunami as high as 30 m along the west coast of Banten and south coast of Lampung.  The tsunami hit 295 villages and killed over 36,000 people.”

At Wikipedia, “The island exploded in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people, although some estimates put the death toll much higher. The explosion is still considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history, with reports of it being heard nearly 3,000 miles from its point of origin. The shock wave from the explosion was recorded on barographs around the globe.” With a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 6,[3] the eruption was equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT (840 PJ) — about 13,000 times the nuclear yield of the Little Boy bomb (13 to 16 kt) that devastated Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II and four times the yield of the Tsar Bomba (50 Mt), the largest nuclear device ever detonated. More about Krakatau here.

Indonesian fishermen fear the volcano. The following excerpt is Google-translated from Indonesian-

Krakatau erupts, fishermen not go to sea
“The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau left hundreds of fishermen in the District Cinangka, Serang, Banten, do not dare go to sea for fear of being exposed to material vulaknik of the mountain. “I had three today do not dare go down to the sea, fearing that the material will be exposed to rock fall from Mount Anak Krakatau,” said the fisherman village of Pasauruan, Cinangka, Sarbini, Friday (29/10).”

Meanwhile, Mt. Merapi erupted again last night in the wee hours. Again, this excerpt below is Google-translated from Indonesian:

“…eruption of Mount Merapi, which re-occurred on Saturday (30/10) at around 00:16 pm is greater than ever. Eruptions are accompanied by loud rumbling sound, lava, and ash rain came down to the settlement residents in Jalan Kaliurang Kilometer 19, Yogyakarta. These conditions make people panic.”His voice boomed, like lightning,” said Parti…”

The following from Indonesia Today was posted on Friday, a day before Krakatau’s alert level was also raised, but it explains what a level 2 means:

“The Centre of Vulcanology and Mitigation of Geology Disaster, a sub-department of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, on Friday announced that the status of eight volcanoes has been raised to level II or “caution level”, indicating increasing activity of these volcanoes. The eight volcanoes are: (1) Mount Sinabung, in Karo, North Sumatera; (2) Mount Talang, Solok, West Sumatera; (3) Mount Anak Krakatau, Lampung (Child of Krakatau Volcano); (4) Mount Papandayan, Garut, West Java; (5) Mount Slamet, Tegal, Central Java; (6) Mount Dieng, Wonosobo, Central Java; (7) Mount Semeru, Lumajang, East Java; and Mount Bromo, Probolinggo, East Java, detik.com reported on Friday.”

“Level I is “Normal” status, means that there is no magma pressured from beneath the mount. Action recommended is routine observation, survey and study. When a volcano status is raised to Level II status or “Caution”, there is increasing activity above normal level and that there has been seismic activity. Under this situation, actions need to be undertaken include public campaign over the impact on the society if the volcano erupts…”

The third level or Level III is an “Alert” (yellow) status. Under this period, a volcano shows indications to erupt, seismic activity intensifies and that seismic data shows that seismic activity of the mount will continue to eruption level that could cause disaster. The fourth level or Level IV is a “”Danger” or “Red” status. During this period, the volcano shows indication that will soon erupt.”

This week has been a busy one for volcanoes:

Kliuchevskoi and Shiveluch erupt in a busy week for volcanoes
“So, maybe I spoke too soon when I mentioned in passing how quiet the fall has been in the world of volcanic eruptions. In less than a week since I said this, we’ve had one of the more dramatic and tragic eruptions in the last decade in Indonesia (more on Merapi’s eruption later today) and, lost in the Merapi news, were two eruptions on Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. … The first eruption occurred on Sunday, when Kliuchevskoi produced an ash plume that reached over ~30,000 feet…Meanwhile, yesterday Shiveluch produced its own explosive eruption as well. This eruption produced a 32,000 foot ash plume…”

I updated my global volcanism chart. Source data is from Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program.
