A Christian Astronomer debunks the blood moon theory from both a scientific and a biblical perspective

An internet friend named James sent me an excellent article regarding the hoopla surrounding several astronomical events due to occur this week. The article debunks any credibility whatsoever regarding blood moons related to prophecy. It is reasoned, biblical, AND scientific. The author of the article is Dr. Hugh Ross, a Christian Astronomer. Dr Ross was asked by John Hagee Ministries to participate in Hagee’s movie regarding the blood moons, knowing Ross is a skeptic, to Hagee’s credit. Thus, we have a credible insider’s view on every level to explain to us why the blood moons are not ushering in a new era. Here is the beginning of the article and I urge one and all to read it.

Blood Moons: An End-Times Sign? (Part 1 of 2)

Four Blood Moons, a theatrical one-night event scheduled for March 23, 2015, and based on Texas megachurch pastor John Hagee’s New York Times bestseller of the same name, has garnered attention. I’m featured briefly in the film as a skeptic of Hagee’s central claim that a sequence of four total lunar eclipses signifies that “world history is about to change,” bringing about the rapid fulfillment of a biblical end-times prophecy. I’m also included in a 20-minute panel discussion on the movie that was recorded at Hagee’s San Antonio headquarters.

Hagee knew in advance my views on his claims and I’m impressed that he would allow a “skeptic” of his view to participate. For that, he is to be commended.

The biblical basis for the four blood moons claim as an eschatological event appears in Joel 2:31, which states, “The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.” The scientific basis rests on the fact that often during a total lunar eclipse, the Moon, as seen from Earth’s surface, takes on an orange or red hue (see figures 1 and 2).

My greater concern centers on biblical, rather than scientific, misinterpretations of the blood-moon sign, and I will address those in part 2. First I will address the science and history of lunar eclipses.

As the article below sums it up, “Clearly, the scriptures that Pastor Hagee says refer to red moons are not the result of lunar eclipses. Instead, these verses describe cosmic phenomena that tell of the moon turning red or being darkened because of comets falling and putting so much dust into the atmosphere that even the sun will be darkened. These verses tell of impact events that are to take place in the last stages of the Tribulation Period as described in the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Trumpet, and the Seventh Vial of the Book of Revelation. (Also, see Isaiah 13:5-13 and Isaiah 34:4).”

Keep reading the link below to see exactly why the four blood moons may be astronomically interesting, but in no way are prophetically interesting, nor are they related to any prophecy of the bible. (Correctly interpreted prophecy of the bible, that is).

Four Blood Moons
“Bottom line: the four blood red moons caused by solar eclipse that are to occur in 2014-2015 do not constitute signs of important prophetic events that will soon take place.”

Four Blood Moons: Something Is About to Change

Pastor Hagee’s subtitle to his book “Something is about to change” is correct. For two thousand years, things have been about to change. Paul wrote about that in 1 Corinthians 15:52, and Titus 2:13, and 1 Thessalonians 1:10, and Philippians 3:20, and Matthew 24:30, and 1 John 2:28, and Philippians 4:5… and so on. Something has always been about to change. The Lord’s return for His bride (rapture) and His return in wrath and judgment (Second Coming, different from the rapture) have always loomed over us. His return is mentioned in every New Testament book except Philemon.

Pastor Hagee wrote a book that things are about to change is because he believes he knows when they are about to change. And therein is the excitement. Someone has a clue! Someone has an inside track! Someone is about to reveal when!

We long for the Lord so it’s natural to long for His return when we can be with Him. (1 Thessalonians 4:18). Christians can know the season but not the hour (1 Thessalonians 5:4). Though the clues for the progress of the Tribulation are spelled out in detail (Rev 6-20, Matthew 24) the appearance of the Lord for His bride, AKA the rapture event, is not known. There are no signals and no signs to determine His coming. However, if we can see certain infrastructure being laid for the Tribulation then we can pray and hope the rapture is even nearer, since it will precede the wrath. (1 Thessalonians 5:9).

Pastor Hagee and Mark Biltz have intuited the times and have forecasted the Lord’s return based on four red eclipse moons that will be appearing in 2014 and 2015. These blood moons, as they are called, are garnering special attention due to the fact that they will be occurring on Jewish feast days. Biltz and Hagee ascribe special significance to this.

The new normal is definitely NOT normal

Here are just a few things that constitute the new normal. All of the links are from this year, with only one or two exceptions.

1. Massive migrating animal deaths taking place all over the globe (link)
2. Major super storms taking place (link) (link)
3. Magnetic pole migration that have been going on since 2004 (link)
4. Irregular weather causing food shortages (link)

19. Mega solar flare activity (link)
20. Climategate (link)

This list could go on and on. I didn’t even mention the economy, politics, or wars. But speaking of wars, here is an excellent video from Pastor John Hagee, on Libya. It was uploaded today and contains extremely current information. In three minutes, he shows from the bible exactly how close we are to Gog-Magog battle. And if the Gog-Magog battle is that close, the rapture is even closer. That last part was my opinion. Don’t miss this video!
