What is it? The Atlanticus Sea Slug

It is another of God’s amazing creatures! The Glaucus Atlanticus sea slug, says Chicago Now blog:“The Glaucus Atlanticus Sea Slug is as unusual as its appearance suggests – this thing is honestly pretty weird, but we can forgive it since it is so breath-taking.

These creatures are three centimeters long and predominantly colored with silver and blue tints. They are found in tropical waters, specifically those off of the coast of Africa and Australia. (Though they exist predominantly in these locations, they can also be found off of European coasts.)

The Glaucus Atlanticus Sea Slug floats on top of the water by using it’s gas filled sac. (Sounds gross, but floating is pretty cool.)

Surprisingly, these tiny slugs actually feed on large, dangerous, poisonous animals; namely the Portuguese Man O’ War. Yeah, those are the things that you try to avoid at all costs whenever you go snorkeling in the ocean, because their stings hurt like no other. Here’s a quote from Wikipedia that I found… disturbing.

Consumes the entire organism.

The Glaucus Atlanticus Sea Slug consumes the entire organism. THAT’S INSANE. This animal also steals the poison from the creature it just preyed upon, and then saves that poison as a self-defense mechanism.”

And just think, God made this creature and all creatures in 6 days.

Begin with God

“From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.” (Ezra 3:6)

What is happening in this section of Ezra, which is in the Old Testament, is that the first flood of returnees from the Babylonian captivity had just gotten back to the Land. The decreed 70 years separation/punishment/captivity for worshiping false gods and idols was over, (Jeremiah 25:9-12; Daniel 9:2; Jeremiah 29:10) and as described in Ezra 1:5, the Jews had been impressed upon their heart to return, and so they did.

They made a 900 mile, 9 months walk from Mesopotamia (Iraq) to their homeland for the express purpose of re-igniting proper worship of the LORD. With this in mind, when they got there and after being allowed a short time to set up living quarters and get the animals and families settled, they launched into the main task.

But note the verse: they began with making an altar. They did not lay the foundation first. They did not build walls. They did not build furniture. They put God at the heart and the start of it all.

Foundation is important! Without it, the structure will not stand. God will build the foundation. But first comes worship.

It is like that for unsaved sinners when they come to salvation. They do not need to visit churches and take time to decide which one is the right one, and then walk an aisle. They do not need to wait until office hours are re-opened and meet with a pastor. They do not need to wait and try and conquer this sin or that sin so they would be even purer before they come to the Lord. You can ask for forgiveness of sins right then, right there, right now. Worship the Lord first, and then He will build your foundation.

For the saved, forgiven Christians, if you have separated from Jesus for a while, you do not need to do any of the above, either. The Jews returning from Babylon already were headed for heaven and already knew the LORD. They had been selected by the LORD to return. (Ezra 1:5). But even so, they did not set up a training school for priests and wait to be blessed or preached to. They did not spend inordinate period developing plans and examining architectural renderings. They got right to the heart of it: worshiping the Lord.

I am not saying that not having a foundation is OK. I am not saying that all the rest of the things I mentioned are to be ignored. The returning exiles did not ignore them. But the first thing they did was begin worship. All good things always start from that one act: humble submission to the One true God. As long as He is the focus, He will bring the development of the individuals and the nation along as He wills.

So? What are you waiting for? Begin worship! What is worship? How is one to worship? Paul explained the elements of worship to us in Romans 12:1-2: “I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable, or well pleasing and perfect.”

0. Understand that the one true God is the only One who bestows mercies.
1. Present yourselves. The Jewish exiles did just that in the Ezra verse.
2. A living and holy sacrifice means that you understand that by presenting yourself, you are submitting to the control of God for your body, mind, heart, spirit, and life.
3. Our spiritual service of worship is that He deserves our all. Nothing less. Service to Him is His right and our calling.
4. ‘Do not be conformed to this world’ in context of worship means you reject what the world has to offer and you instead seek what God offers from His world.
5. ‘Be transformed by the renewing of our minds’ means as an act of worship, we read the bible and allow His thoughts to engulf us, penetrate us, and aid us in resisting the world. Learning what He said to us and wants us to know is worship.
6. Prove what the will of God is, which is through our acts of submission and worship, to shine His light of glory back to Him. When people see us, they should see the glory and light of Jesus in us. Worshiping Him does that. It is a cycle.
7. The only things that are good and acceptable to God are the things of God, and in His strength. Without Him we can do nothing and there is no one good.

True worship is submitting to, and operating under and within the power and glory of God wherever we are, all the time. Not just in church, as important as it is to worship Him in open assembly, but also worship Him in life, with our lives. Worship comes first, because we begin with God!

Is God female? Is Jesus a hermaphrodite? Feminism’s modern attacks- part 2

An entire generation has now grown up with Gloria Steinem’s declaration, “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle” (coined by Irina Dunn.). Christianity has not been immune from feminism’s effects, as startlingly seen in two news articles this week from a female theologian and a historian about Jesus and God. In one, the theologian proposed that Jesus was a hermaphrodite. In the other, the historian proposed that we can’t really know if God is or is not a girl. In part 1 I took a look at the news articles and then at the biblical stance of the position of women in this essay: Is God female and is Jesus a hermaphrodite?

Source

One thing that God said is that the woman is the weaker vessel. (1 Peter 3:7). She is to be the helpmeet. (Gen 2:18). However, no one or the other of the man or the woman is better than the other, the man is urged to love his wife completely and the woman to love her husband completely, just as Jesus perfectly loves both. (Ephesians 5:22-33). I explored these themes and the Feminists in an essay eight months ago titled The Eternal Discontent of Feminists.

Betty Miller explained this submission cycle in her essay, “The Bible teaches that, in the Spirit, women are equal with men, and each must submit unto Jesus as their spiritual head. In the flesh, in the marriage relationship, women are to be subject to their husband’s headship. The Lord ordained that the man be the one that would make final decisions in the home because in any relationship involving two people one must be the final authority.”

Have you ever heard of a ship with two captains? An expedition with two leaders? A squadron with two generals? No. And it is so in God-ordained relationships. Though we all submit to Jesus, the husband submits to Him as Jesus submitted to God. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,” (Ephesians 5:25). And remember, Jesus gave Himself unto death. Feminists conveniently forget that part of the submission cycle.

So what are the effects of a generation of women being hammered on the fact that we don’t “need” a man? Men have fled. They did what women asked, and they left.

According to this 2008 Census report, one in three American children live without their biological father in the home.
–From 1960 to 1995, the proportion of children living in single-parent homes have tripled, increasing from 9 percent to 27 percent, and the proportion of children living with married parents declined.
–Today, half of all children, and 80 percent of African American children, can expect to live at least part of their childhood living apart from their fathers. (Report of Final Natality).
–Children who live without their biological fathers are, on average, at least two to three times more likely to be poor, use drugs, experience educational, health, emotional and behavioral problems, be victims of child abuse, and engage in criminal behavior than their peers who live with their married, biological (or adoptive) parents.

But I thought women didn’t need men, and by deduction, girls didn’t need fathers. Why, two mommies equals one daddy, right? Apparently not.

This is not to say that all fathers do not want to be with their children. A multitude of men feel pain and anguish when they cannot be with them. But in the twisting of a societal usurpation of the traditional male and female roles, there is collateral damage. Society is reaping that damage now.

That collateral damage extends to the church. Men hate going to church. In David Murrow’s book on “Why Men Hate Going to Church, he says, “The ideology of masculinity has replaced Christianity as the true religion of men. We live in a society with a female religion and a male religion: Christianity, of various sorts, for women and non-masculine men; and masculinity . . . for men.”

The diminishing of their masculinity has led many men to assert it and thus to avoid places where it is perceived that it does not exist, like church. Meanwhile in church, females rise.

MYSTICS

Source

To be sure, in much of the church’s history after the first generation of Christians passed, and with the ascendancy of the Roman Catholic perversion of the faith and its power throughout the Middle Ages (5th to 15th centuries), the proper role for women was suppressed and the proper role for men was abused. It was during this time the female search for a role in spirituality led satan to tempt women in particular to the role of mystics. Didn’t you ever wonder why it is mostly women who are considered the ‘great mystics’?

Professor Ian Johnston of Malaspina University-College said of mystics in his lecture on Hildegard the mystic, “we usually mean someone who has, or who claims to have, direct access to the mystery of cosmic and human order, some immediate and unmediated apprehension of a total knowledge of what truly is. Such knowledge characteristically comes from an experience of union with the divine or the transcendent, that is, with the higher world beyond the realm of our physical sensations. Mystical experience typically comes through visions and voices, or both (Hildegard attests to both).” Above, Liber Scivias showing Hildegard receiving a vision and dictating to her scribe and secretary.

Hildegard of Bingen was such a one. Born in circa 1098, she lived through most of the 1100s. She began receiving visions from the age of three but kept them hidden until much later in life, when in a vision, she felt the presence of God come to her and heard Him say “Write what you see and hear.” She was known as the prophetess of the Rhine. She said, “‘…my perception of things depends on the shifting of the clouds and other elements of creation. Still I do not hear these things with bodily ears, nor do I see them with the cogitations of my heart or the evidence of my five senses. I see them only in my spirit, with my eyes wide open…'” It was after one such vision that the entire understanding of the holy books were delivered to her head, at once and instantly. We should all be so lucky.

And to another monk she wrote, “man flies with the two wings of rationality, that is to say, with the knowledge of good and evil. The right wing is good knowledge and the left, evil. Evil knowledge serves the good, and good knowledge is kept in check by the evil, and is even made more discerning by it. Indeed the good is made wise in all things through the evil.”

The good is made wise in evil? I was not aware that there was any good in us at all…or that evil makes us wise. It was satan’s original temptation to Eve that said if she ate the fruit it would open her eyes to knowledge of good and evil. And it did, but the effects have been devastating right up until this moment, and will continue to be so until the end of the Millennium Kingdom when and death and Hades are thrown into the Lake of Fire along with satan too. (Rev 20:14).

In this article, Female Mystics and the New Millennium, the author proposes the reason so many women are mystics: “A large percentage of mystics are women. Neurological studies of male and female brains reveal that women have better communication via the corpus callosum between the left and right brain. Dreams and visions are the domain of the right brain, while verbal communication is ruled by the left. This implies that while men may have as many mystical experiences as women, women might have a slight edge when it comes to remembering, making sense of and communicating their mystical experiences.”

Of one vision Hildegard recorded, she wrote that it was audible to her: “O poor little figure of a woman; you, who are the daughter of many troubles, plagued by a grave multitude of bodily infirmities, yet steeped, nonetheless, in the vastness of God’s mysteries—commit to permanent record for the benefit of human kind, what you see with your inner eyes and perceive with the inner ears of your soul so that, through these things, people may come to know their Creator and not recoil from worshipping him with the reverence due to him.”

Hildegard had very low self-esteem, this is recorded in her many writings. For someone who thinks little of herself, it is an undeniable attraction to think that one will write something that will affect all of human kind … yet the canon was closed a thousand years before Hildegard lived and all knowledge of the Creator had been delivered already…

To want to have a certain moral authority, and to have a spiritual authority, was the old temptation which satan stirred up in Eve (Genesis 3:5) and that same temptation still exerts a powerful pull today. Hildegard and the numerous other mystics claiming special revelation also fell for satan’s craft. You have heard of wise-women, the phrase “the sage sex” and of new female mystics. As Mary Devlin says of the powerful female energies in the mystic, there is a resurgence of female energy in this time of transition. She wrote of modern mysticism-

“According to Carol Huffstickler, mystical practices are vital to our perception of the whole truth during the current transition. “Our real job right now is to understand that lack of (self-)awareness has caused, at the end of this century, deep confusion, gang violence, government shenanigans and cover-ups, and the out-of-control power of multinational corporations,” she says. “The most important ‘Truth’… is one that is absolutely and totally unprovable: we are all sons and daughters of the Living God. We will not find this truth in a particle accelerator. We can only prove it to ourselves by direct experience of the other side.”

Of course one will want to seek truth in something other than the bible when one has already chucked the bible’s authority out, and with it, the roles of man and woman.

And that is the crux of a problem with the church today. There has been a leak-over of feminism with its over-reliance on ‘female energies’ of the New Age movement, and with it, their claims of special revelation. This special revelation is no longer relegated to fringe movements such as those led by Shirley MacLaine and her popular books such as Out on a Limb and Dancing in the Light, or psychics like Carol Huffstickler. Huffstickler was a psychic who had a thriving business in Houston to tell where to drill for oil. She died in 2002, of lung cancer, and the sudden onset of her own illness was something she did not predict.

Feminist icon Oprah is one of the most influential women in the world. Unfortunately she is another New Age mystic whose unbiblical positions and ideas have leaked over to the Christian church and thus have gained a foothold of credibility. Formerly a Baptist, she has seamlessly blended the mystical and biblical, and combined with her influence, has created a false church of Oprah. One woman’s reaction to seeing her in person gushes about Oprah’s feminist theology:

“And she was everything I hoped she’d be: confident, funny, motivating, emotionally moving, and theological. Yes, theological. And not only that, her stories reflected a theology that empowered women, something we don’t always encounter in churches these days. … what I found interesting in Oprah’s talk were the ways that she reclaimed religious language in an almost feminist way. I expected her to sermonize about how important it is that we [as women] give up control of our lives to God. This is a fairly typical viewpoint in Christian theology. In fact, there are numerous worship songs that are popular in churches today with lines like “less of me; more of You,” “I decrease so He increases,” etc. The problem with this theology, particularly for women, is that it encourages us to literally become less of ourselves. For some women, this can manifest itself, quite literally, in anorexia. For others, it appears in a quiet meekness, a hesitancy about ourselves, an overall lack of self-confidence, or worse, a deep manifestation of self-loathing.”

Of course, that is an extremely flawed view of what Christianity is, but one finds that theme in Beth Moore’s talks, too.  Beth Moore is another such example of such mystical leak-over from the New Age fringe to the formerly fundamentalist church believer. Moore often claims special revelation by mystical means, most recently claiming to have been lifted up by God from her back porch to another dimension to see the global church through Jesus’s eyes as Jesus sees it. This kind of revelation is startlingly similar to Hildegard of Bingen’s visions.

The woman is the weaker vessel. (1 Peter 3:7). Barnes Notes, which you may know was published in the mid-1800s at the height of the supposed repressive Victorian era, says, “By this it is not necessarily meant that she is of feebler capacity, or inferior mental endowments, but that she is more tender and delicate; more subject to infirmities and weaknesses; less capable of enduring fatigue and toil; less adapted to the rough and stormy scenes of life. As such, she should be regarded and treated with special kindness and attention.”

It is a horror and a shame that such secular doctrines and mystical behaviors have infiltrated the Christian church. Feminism is a fake solution to the issues in our sinful society and mysticism certainly is a satanic copy of what church worship and devotion should be. It is a fact that there are societal inequalities for women. But militantly insisting that women receive everything absolutely equal to a man is ludicrous. We are a different gender and we have different needs, strengths, and roles. In the last part we will take a look at Logistics. We’ll examine what those biblical roles are and why each is important in the overall complementary scheme God has laid before us.

‘God is coming – look busy’, says Early Doors Eurosport blog

God is coming – look busy
“According to dusty religious scripture, God’s return will be preceded by Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse inflicting untold misery across the land. But Early Doors took a peek out the window this morning and couldn’t spot any signs of war, disease or pestilence, at least no more than you would expect in the poky corner of south-west London it inhabits. Which is strange, because God is most certainly returning. Don’t worry, ED hasn’t joined an apocalyptic cult in anticipation of an imminent rapture, with beakers of Kool-Aid at the ready and hundreds of disciples in tow – but have you heard the good news? Robbie Fowler — nicknamed God by Liverpool fans, and part-time horse racing enthusiast and landlord extraordinaire — is signing for Blackpool.”

How about that. God is coming. And he is an aging UK footballer.

The man has been retired for 4 years but this was one of the last sports articles about him in 2006 before that current article above was published:
Liverpool – City of God
“The second coming was complete on Wednesday when for the first time in over four years Robbie Fowler ran on to the Anfield pitch as a Liverpool FC player. … Few players have endeared themselves to the supporters in quite the same way as the 30-year-old did during his first spell at Liverpool. His 171 goals in 330 appearances earned him the nickname ‘God’ from his legions of admirers. “

And here I thought all this time the City of God was Jerusalem.

Hopefully if you are reading this you will be a saddened as I am at the cavalier application of the Most High’s name to an aging footballer well liked by his fans. You will know and understand the blasphemy. Do they really not understand what they are doing when they say stuff like this?

Let’s take a look at the Third Commandment. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.” (Exodus 20:7). Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry has a good article on the subject. I encourage you to read it, it is short.

God’s name is holy, and it was given to us by Himself. It identifies who He is, the one and only God. To adopt that name for casual purposes, for example, to express surprise or anger is a gross misuse of the fullness of His name for an empty purpose.

To use that name for one’s self or even to accept it without refutation when it is given to a person by others is idolatry in the highest sense. When Paul and Barnabas were in Lystra and they had performed a miracle, the people prepared a sacrifice to them and called them gods. Paul and Barnabas were horrified and tore their clothes and shouted to the crowd not to do it. (Acts 14:11-18). But Fowler was called THE God? And for people to scream accolades and honors to that false ‘god’ as the footballers did? How empty and vain, how unholy.

As for believers, let us be careful about using His name. Refresh our minds with the commandment not to take it uselessly. After all, it is God’s saving name: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). It is the highest name: “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name…” (Philippians 2:9). When we utter the name of God out loud, whether it be God or Jesus or Holy Spirit or Yeshua or LORD/Lord…whatever appellation you use when you speak of Him, do it with honor and dignity, praising that name above all names.

Discovered: Billions of other planets

Here are three excerpts from three different media outlets, all saying the same thing: there’s billions of planets. Huh. Who knew?

An Otherworldly Discovery: Billions of Other Planets
“Astronomers said Wednesday that each of the 100 billion stars in the Milky Way probably has at least one companion planet, on average, adding credence to the notion that planets are as common in the cosmos as grains of sand on the beach. The finding underscores a fundamental shift in scientific understanding of planetary systems in the cosmos. Our own solar system, considered unique not so long ago, turns out to be just one among billions.”

Milky Way may be home to billions of planets
“The Milky Way is awash in planets by the billions, and astronomers are finding more every day. There’s a tiny solar system way out there with three planets smaller than Earth, and at least three other new-found ones with a single planet flying around two suns at once. And now an international team of astronomers calculates that there must be more than 10 billion rocky planets the size of Earth within the Milky Way, perhaps even more, if planets of all kinds were counted – small ones, big ones and “gas giants” bigger than Jupiter.”

Galaxy Has 100 Billion Planets, Including ‘Star Wars’ Lookalike
“Planets orbiting other stars may be a dime a dozen in the Milky Way, but cheap hardly means boring. From a new pair of planets like Tatooine of “Star Wars” fame, each with its own pair of suns, to a trio of small rocky planets zipping around a red-dwarf star, the cosmos presents a breathtaking plethora of planetary systems. A new estimate suggests that the Milky Way’s population of planets exceeds 100 billion.”

Who knew? God knew. Now, the first article above said that the discovery engendered a “fundamental shift” in understanding about how the cosmos operates. So, humans have spent 6000 years in a misunderstanding. Billions of planets have been out there all this time, yet not only have humans not seen them, we never even knew they were there.

Why would God make so many planets if for all of human history, now at the end, we learn of their existence? Why would God do that?

I don’t know the mind of God but perhaps we could say, for His good pleasure? Because He is prolific? Because His mind is infinite and therefore infinitely creative? For our good pleasure that after we are glorified and in heaven we can see them and praise His handiwork?

Isn’t that just like a Creator God to lavish upon Himself and upon us a sparkling array of planetary jewels across the black velvet of the universe.

Teeming with life? This artist’s impression shows how common planets are around the stars in the Milky Way

Genesis 1:1-10

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

This made me laugh: Peter and his impetuousness

I’m reading a small pamphlet called “Found: God’s Will.” I plan to donate it to my church library and I’m reading it in advance of that, though I know that the author is solid and the information will be good.

So I am on this part discussing Peter’s experience with Jesus in several settings. In this one, they are on the boat.

“Suddenly one of the men in the boat looked out and said, “Someone is walking on the water!” Sure enough, with robes flowing in the wind, here comes Jesus walking across the whitecaps.

Peter cried out, “Is that You, Lord?”
The Lord answered, “It is I”
Peter said, “Can I come?”

“You may wonder why Peter said that. Why didn’t he wait in the boat until Jesus got there? But that wouldn’t have been like Peter. He said to himself, ‘Jesus is over there. I am over here. That is not good. I must go over there.’ It never entered his mind that normally he was not able to walk on water. That was not even a problem. When he saw Jesus, he had such a desire to be with Him, that he went.”

LOL! ‘It never entered his mind that normally he was not able to walk on water“… Is your desire to be near Jesus that strong, that the impulse to be near to Him overrides all else?

How do we be near Jesus these days? First, we repent of our sins and become saved. If we are not saved, we are outside His body. God does not lead those who have not received Jesus as personal Savior. If you are not with Him, you are against Him. (Matthew 12:30). The first step is to be saved, that brings you so close to Jesus that he sends the Holy Spirit to be inside you! Talk about close!

Next, we have to die to self. It is our flesh and our will that separates us from Jesus. When we are not saved it is our sins that keep us from him, our flesh wanting to say and do things that oppose Him. When we are saved, the fleshly will and lusts do not go away. Unchecked and unrepented fleshly sins do cause us to be distant from Jesus, even if we are saved, (Proverbs 28:13) though we do not lose our salvation. But our lusts can be held in check by submission to the Holy Spirit and He helps us resist sin. We do not have the power or the will to do that but the Spirit does. So Jesus said,

“Luke 9:23-24 (NIV) Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.”

Also, pray frequently. Colossians 4:2 says to “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Devote is a strong word, the Greek means to persevere in, to remain steadfastly upon. Don’t become lax in your prayer life, sending up a quickie prayer before bed and falling asleep in the middle of it. The prayers of the saints are heard by the Holy God in His courts!

“The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel’s hand.” (Revelation 8:4)

Have you pondered lately what a privilege it is to pray to God and that He promises to hear them? We have a Holy and Loving God on His throne, with Jesus sitting by His side interceding for us. (Romans 8:34) Wow! Get excited over that!

So, to be close to Jesus we are born again, we die to self daily, and we pray devotedly. What else could we do to stay close to Jesus’ side? Read His Word, of course. That is what Peter was doing- propelling himself toward the Word.

When we pray we speak to Him, but when we read His Word, He speaks to us. Everything we need to know about truth, Godly living, prayer, fasting, parenting, working, serving…it is all in there. Does the Word sit on your shelf, gathering dust?. Does it languish in the back seat of your car, fading? Or is it well-worn, spine cracked, pages wrinkled, children familiar? Personally I find the Word fascinating and beautiful. God sent the Word in the flesh to us, (John 1:14) and after that He sent the Word to us in the closed canon of the bible. (Revelation 22:21). He says things like this in it:

“The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.” (Psalm 19:8)

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (Colossians 3:12)

We are dearly loved, by the Holy God! Not just loved, but dearly loved! So dearly love Him back and read what He has to say to us, read about His nature and character as He reveals it. How can we serve a Jesus we don’t know? How can we love Him back if we do not know Whom we are loving?

There are many things we do to stay close to the Lord, but I’ll end with this one. Stay faithful through trials, dear ones. Stay faithful. Trials come, they do to all born again believers. Peter said to rejoice when they come. Why rejoice?

“These have come so that your faith–of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire–may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” (1 Peter 1:7)

The glory of Jesus Christ! And that is what everything we do is all about: the closer we are to Him the more glory we can reflect back on Him! It is all about He who is coming soon to gather His children to His bosom and take us home. (Isaiah 40:11). His glory is so pure, so bright that no one can see it and live. (Exodus 33:20). But when he collects us, we will be transformed, (1 Corinthians 15:51). We will see it! What a sight that will be! (1 John 3:2)

What’s in a name?

What is in a name indeed. If you ever had a child you know the importance of naming the child a name that fits with the family, is consistent with (hopefully) the child’s character, and doesn’t rile up or offend relatives hoping to have their name go into the next generation, lol.

I was named Elizabeth, and my mother made much of that. She said it was after Queen Elizabeth (the first or the second, the story changed). I always liked Elizabeth. She often said how hard it was to get the family to call me by my full name and not a nickname. It turned out that it was a losing battle, because growing up, I was Beth. When I went away to college I introduced myself to people as Elizabeth and the name stayed that way.

As I grew older I looked into the origin of the name. What did it mean? What was its history? There were several biblical references to Elizabeth, all of which perplexed me, because I wasn’t religious at all. In some interpretations, Elizabeth- Elisheba or Elisheva in Hebrew- appears in the Old Testament where Elisheba is the wife of Aaron, while the Greek form appears in the New Testament where Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist. It means “God’s promise,” or “I am God’s daughter.” In other interpretations it meant “Consecrated to God.” That one confused me most of all. I was far, far from God and certainly not set aside for a specific religious purpose, which is the definition of consecrated.

I often used to muse about that, why I was named something that meant I’d be set aside to perform a certain religious purpose, when I had no religion and didn’t ever see myself getting one. I used to think, “Ho, that is a big miss!”

Names are important in the bible. In the bible there are certain individuals where the expectant parents are told by a messenger angel from God what to name the child. Specifically named people who come immediately to mind are John the Baptist (Luke 1:13), and of course Jesus. (Luke 1:31).

There are individuals who were specifically renamed by God. Abram was renamed Abraham by God (Gen 17:5). Abram, meaning ‘Father is exalted’ was changed to ‘father of myriads.’ Jacob was renamed Israel by God (Gen 32:28). Jacob meant heel or deceit, and was changed to “to prevail” to become great in number. And of course, Sarai was renamed Sarah by God (Gen 17:15). This renaming usually indicated the start of a covenant with God.

Saul was also known as Paul the Apostle (AKA Acts 13:9) but was not renamed as far as I can tell in the biblical record. He was Saul, known also as Paul. Simon was given an additional name of Peter by Jesus (Mt 16:18) but was referred to as Simon, Peter, and Simon Peter throughout the bible at various times and not specifically renamed. Peter which means ‘rock’ in Greek was a reminder to Simon of how God wanted his behavior to be.

Some people were given nicknames. Barnabas, Paul’s helper and also an apostle (Acts 14:14), was given the name Joseph at birth. He was so encouraging though that he was given the nickname Son of Encouragement. (Acts 4:36). How wonderful to be known in the biblical record for all eternity as so helpful that his very nature was reflected in his nickname. As for James and John, “These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”)…” (Mark 3:16-17). Sons of Thunder is another way of saying ‘hotheads’, lol.

As I mentioned, the giving of a new name usually meant the beginning of a new covenant, as evidenced by Abram, Sarai, and Jacob’s new names. This thought is carried through to eternity, when in Revelation 2:17 we are given a new name by Jesus that only we will know. “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.”

So for 42 years I wondered about my name. What it meant, why it had religious overtones, and whether God had anything to do with me ending up with the name I was given. For many years I thought that I could not be further from God if I tried, and I liked it that way. Yet at age 42 what He knew all along came true for me, that I was set aside for a certain religious purpose and I did become God’s daughter. I believe the Lord impressed upon my parents to give me this name. I am so glad that no sin, no distance, and no time period can be too wide or too deep or too long to separate us from Him if we repent. I enjoyed my name for secular reasons and now that I’m saved I enjoy it all the more for His reasons. I am looking forward to being renamed in eternity, too.

You can have a new name if you repent. The first new name will be “Child of God” and “Friend of God” instead of ‘enemy of God.’ He might rename you or you might get a nickname that suits the purposes He has outlined for you. Or you might grow into your name once and for all. The point is, He has a purpose for you and it is a good purpose. His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:30). Jesus is love and He is also your Father ready and eager at you being born again, so much so, that He wants to give you a name He has picked out Himself. “I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” (Isaiah 43:6-7)

Time lapse of night sky through Very Large Telescope. Beautiful!

Incredible time lapse short movie of the earth’s sky at night through the Very Large Telescope observatory in Chile, one of the finest observatories in one of the darkest sites on the planet.

Discover Magazine says,”A couple of things I want to point out: at 1:10 into the video, you see the Milky Way rising majestically over the mountains, and you can see a faint, whitish glow stretching diagonally across the field of view, at an angle to the galaxy. That’s called the zodiacal light, and is caused by the reflection of sunlight by dust in the plane of our solar system. It’s probably due to eons of collisions grinding asteroids into dust; they tend to orbit the Sun in the same plane as the planets. It’s actually a disk of dust, but since we’re in it, we see it as a line across the sky. It’s pretty faint, and you need dark skies to spot it.”

A couple of things I want to point out. First,  it is very beautiful. The following verses are appropriate to ponder this beauty:

‘When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;” (Psalm 83)

“He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them. (Psalm 147:4)

“Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26.

We serve a mighty and wonderful Creator!! Watch in awe and praise Him!

Transgendered Chastity Bono and "Dancing with the Stars", God, and culture

Chaz. Chastity Bono. Sonny & Cher’s daughter…who chose to reject her biologically determined gender as a woman and surgically become a man.

Chastity as a child:

Chastity as a woman:

Chaz as a man:

Cher’s celebrity daughter was tapped to become a contestant on Dancing With the Stars, a long-running successful reality game show. The outcry was immediate. AFP reports, “The 42-year-old LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) activist formerly known as Chastity Bono is the first transgender contestant on the US version of the globally popular reality television series. He’s the only child of entertainers Cher and the late Sonny Bono, and his debut on prime-time television comes hard on the heels of the release of his autobiography “Transition: The Story of How I Became a Man”. “I’m an activist, first and foremost,” said Bono when ABC television, part of the family-oriented Disney media empire, introduced its 12 couples who will tackle the tango, the foxtrot and samba when the series begins September 19. “I will look at this as just a wonderful opportunity to kind of bring my message to even more people than I’ve had the chance to.”

The backlash against this decision to place a transgendered person front and center in prime time apparently stunned Hollywood. There were immediately over 1000 comments on the show’s website. Most of the comments accused the show of pushing a homosexual agenda in prime time. Chastity’s eagerness to visibly tout his transgenderism as stated above belies the show’s denials of having an agenda. GLAAD also says that the inclusion of openly gay judge Carson Kressley and the lineup of dancers including Bono is a ‘major step forward.’ Step forard in what? In pushing the agenda. In this article, the show’s producers seek to address the backlash, unsuccessfully. One commenter said,

RACAsper said, “I fully respect ABC’s Freedom of Speech. They are free to choose whomever they want for whatever reasons they want. I am also free to turn off the show. I am free to state that I am tired of their never ending assault on moral values. I am tired of hastily flipping the channel when ABC and the other networks show a ferociously violent, sexually charged, or deviant clip from their latest show. They keep pushing the envelope and now they’ve gone too far in my book.”

Why is presenting gay, lesbian, and transgendered people ‘an agenda’? Because the attention paid to their agenda, or as it is defined, ‘set of goals of an ideological group’ is disproportionate to their population number. There are only 400,000 people in the United States who define themselves as biologically born in the “wrong” gender. The population in the US is 300 million.

More to the point, the issue isn’t just numerical, it is moral. People intuitively react negatively when confronted with the sexual sins of homosexuality, lesbianism, and transgenderism, because they’re gross. They defy God’s plan. He foreknew each person He was going to make, and he formed us in the womb (Jer 1:5;  Psalm 139:13; Ephesians 2:10). He doesn’t make creative mistakes. If He knew us before He made us then He knew whether we were going to be a woman or a man. If we emerge from the womb and then grow with the mindful decision that we are not the gender we are then it is our mistake, not God’s.

This is not to take away a person’s pain as they grow and feel they are trapped in a wrong body. That struggle may indeed be real to them. But just as many people have struggles, such as unwanted sexual urges toward an opposite or the same gender, toward a desire for alcohol, or for material things that eventually swamp them (Hoarders) it just means they must work harder to resist these urges and wants. The flesh wants what it wants but that does not mean that it should get what it wants. People who succumb to these fleshly desires are to be looked on with compassion, for we all sin. But when looking upon these sins, we exclaim and cry out that God is not to be mocked, and the distortion of transgenderism is an affront to many people who love God and His sovereignty.

In old, staid Maine, a transgender argument is bubbling up now. A family who has a transgendered boy-to-girl is suing the public school system for denial of bathroom access.

The child, who is a twin, was said to have started playing with ‘girl things’ at age three. At age nine, he called himself a boy-girl. The next year, at age ten, he said he was a girl trapped in boy’s body. Eventually, the adjudicating panel ruled against the school district.

How does a child that young know what it feels like to be the wrong gender, or to know what is good for them? We don’t let a ten-year old cross the street by themselves, let alone decide to cross their gender! Allowing a child to distort their God-given biology is a recipe for disaster!

In this Bangor Daily News article accompanying the transgender article above, this doctor (who is the doctor for the aforementioned transgendered child), says “The attempted suicide rate for people who go untreated and unsupported is 45 percent. This population has one of the highest suicide rates of any population in the world. Once they walk in the door for treatment that kind of depression ends.” The implication is that because this small population of transgendered folks is so highly depressed, due to the denial of their expression of their switched gender, they commit suicide. Might I suggest the opposite: they are suicidal because they are living a life that is contrary to their intended gender and satan has instilled in them this dissatisfaction with God’s plan?

The article goes on to interview Dr. Scott Leibowitz, a psychiatrist at the Boston Gender Management Service Clinic. He says, “Gender identity typically is formed around age 3,” he said in a phone interview in August. “It usually presents when a child makes it known that how he or she expresses gender does not match society’s expectations of how that gender should behave.”

Society DOES have expectations of how a gender should behave, and that is for a reason. God’s reason. He made man to be have dominion over the animals, and to provide for the family. He made the woman to be the helper of the man in those endeavors, and to keep the home. He made children the product of their union. When someone chooses not to behave according to their God-given gender, society reacts negatively, and rightly so. As evidenced in the Chaz ‘Dancing With The Stars’ debacle, we are revolted.

In this Christianity Today article, “Peter Sprigg, Family Research Council (FRC) vice president for policy in Washington, D.C., says, “The pressure for acceptance is ultimately a challenge to the authority of Scripture and a violation of natural law. In the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender movement there is a tendency to continually push the envelope in trying to demand the acceptance of what most people perceive to be unusual behavior.”

“God planned for me to be a man before I had ever been created,” Jerry Leach, director of Reality Resources, a ministry in Lexington, Kentucky, to people dealing with gender confusion says. “There was not a woman inside my body longing to be expressed. There is no human condition outside the redemptive circle of God’s love and power.”

The question is often asked, ‘is homosexuality a greater sin than others?” It is answered in a Q&A session by John MacArthur this way:

“Categorically, no, and I’ll tell you why. Because when you have any listing of sins in the Scripture; for example, in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 6, he says in Verse 9, “Do not be deceived,” 1 Corinthians 6:9, “Neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor homosexuals nor sodomites nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” Categorically, you’ve got everything in the same list, … Some would even use those words to refer to people like transvestites or what are they are called today, transgender people, but when you look at a list like that, you see that they’re are all outside the kingdom, so, categorically, they’re all in the same situation. They’re defined by their sin. ”

Then he goes on to describe five kinds of wrath related to sin, especially the sin of homosexuality, and one of them is a kind of wrath that is the wrath of abandonment to a reprobate mind:

“Well, there are five kinds of wrath. There is eternal wrath. That’s hell. There is, I guess what we could call eschatological wrath or the wrath of the last days, the wrath described in Revelation 6 to 19 … so there is eternal wrath; there is eschatological wrath.”

“There is also what I could call cataclysmic wrath, the flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, … and in history, God has judged whole civilizations through cataclysms that took unbelieving people and catapulted them into eternity, such as Pompeii, which was a city literally notorious for its vice, so you have eternal wrath; you have eschatological wrath; you have cataclysmic wrath.”

“Then you have what I would call natural wrath, and that is the wrath of God that comes in a sowing-and-reaping fashion. If you are a drunkard all your life, you may die of cirrhosis of the liver. If you live in sexual sin all your life, you may shorten your life and die of some venereal disease, including AIDS, so there are certain things built in. “Whatever a man sows, he reaps.” That’s another kind of wrath, but the wrath being spoken of here [of homosexuality] is the fifth kind. It’s the wrath of abandonment.”

“It is that judicial act of God, whereby He lets the sinner go. In other words, He stops convicting. He stops calling.” In other words, he gives them over to their reprobate mind, defined in today’s language as “to condemn strongly as unworthy, unacceptable, or evil”.

It seems to me that it is a terrible kind of wrath to be abandoned by God to one’s sin. There does come a time when He stops calling a person toward repentance, and there comes a time when he stops calling a nation toward repentance, too. As we see the warped agenda from a tiny minority of transgendered people has become loomingly disproportionate in secular culture, we must wonder how long the Lord will continue to bestow mercy and how soon He will give us over to our refusal to accept His ways.

Posted in bible jesus, end of days. prophecy, God

Is today the day?

Is today that day that You will call for your church to heaven?
Is today that day You will present a bride to Your Son?
Is today the day You will deal with sin in the world?
Is today that day You will send another warning to the unrepentant?
Is today the day You will quicken the Spirit inside me to grow in Christlikeness?
Is today the day You will send the Spirit to draw my family to the cross?
Is today the day You will grow me in the spiritual fruits?
Is today the day You will chasten me, your child?
Is today the day You will send ministering angels to help me?
Is today the day You will give this land to Abraham and his offspring forever?
Is today the day You will bring Your people out from under the yoke of oppression?
Is today the day You will show Yourself in glory and power?

Today could be the day. For many of these, today IS the day. For others, soon will be the day. The Lord’s promises are true. They will be fulfilled. May His name be forever blessed.
