Fukushima: one year later

Speaking of ecological disasters, how is Fukushima Daiichi doing? After the 9.0 mega-earthquake and devastating tsunami off Japan last March, the nuclear reactor at Fukushima prefecture was damaged. It had equipment failure, nuclear meltdowns, and radiation and cesium release. It was the worst nuclear catastrophe since Chernobyl, and some say that Fukushima is worse. Let’s follow up with how the reactor is doing.

Huffington Post reports today: “More than a year after a tsunami swamped the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plants, the radiation peril continues — reactor 4 is teetering on the edge of collapse, which would force the evacuation of one-third of Japan’s population. The meltdown at Fukushima parallels the meltdown of the US economy.”

And it is far from over, reports HuffPo. “More than a year after the Fukushima nuclear power disaster began, the news media is just beginning to grasp that the dangers to Japan and the rest of the world are far from over.”

Senator Wyden of Oregon recently visited the area. He sent the Japanese Ambassador a follow-up letter. Though the tone of the letter is polite, this news headline says it like it is:

Senator Wyden: Fukushima Worse Than Reported
“Japan, with assistance from the U.S. government, needs to do more to move spent fuel rods out of harm’s way at the tsunami-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, said U.S. Senator Ron Wyden on Monday. Wyden, a senior Democratic senator on the Senate Energy committee, toured the ruined Fukushima plant on April 6, and said the damage was far worse than he expected. “Seeing the extent of the disaster first-hand during my visit conveyed the magnitude of this tragedy and the continuing risks and challenges in a way that news accounts cannot,” said Wyden in a letter to Ichiro Fujisaki, Japan’s ambassador to the United States.”

One official from Japan is also being blunt.

“Japan’s former Ambassador to Switzerland, Mr. Mitsuhei Murata, was invited to speak at the Public Hearing of the Budgetary Committee of the House of Councilors on March 22, 2012, on the Fukushima nuclear power plants accident. Before the Committee, Ambassador Murata strongly stated that if the crippled building of reactor unit 4—with 1,535 fuel rods in the spent fuel pool 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground—collapses, not only will it cause a shutdown of all six reactors but will also affect the common spent fuel pool containing 6,375 fuel rods, located some 50 meters from reactor 4. In both cases the radioactive rods are not protected by a containment vessel; dangerously, they are open to the air. This would certainly cause a global catastrophe like we have never before experienced.” (source)

The amount of Cesium-137 laying around in pools “would destroy the world environment and our civilization. This is not rocket science, nor does it connect to the pugilistic debate over nuclear power plants. This is an issue of human survival.”

An extinction level event. The conspiracy theorists would feel vindicated over that.

Japanese officials finally rate Fukushima a 7 on the disaster scale

The Japanese finally capitulated to reality and rated the Fukushima nuclear disaster an official 7 on the nuclear disaster scale. 7 is the highest level of this kind of disaster. Only one nuclear plant ever experienced a rating of 7 in its disaster assessment, and that was Chernobyl. Below is a headline link to the Japanese article, in a Google translation, and the first paragraph is Google translated from Japanese.

Radiation risks from Fukushima ‘no longer negligible’
“The risks associated with iodine-131 contamination in Europe are no longer “negligible,” according to CRIIRAD, a French research body on radioactivity. The NGO is advising pregnant women and infants against “risky behaviour,” such as consuming fresh milk or vegetables with large leaves. In response to thousands of inquiries from citizens concerned about fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Europe, CRIIRAD has compiled an information package on the risks of radioactive iodine-131 contamination in Europe.”

But the Japanese agency also said that even though the ratings of radiation over Japan are risky for some demographic populations, “the institute underlines that there is absolutely no need to lock oneself indoors or take iodine tablets.” Hmmm.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that their network of radiation monitors (RadNet) detects negligible amounts of radiation in the US from Fukushima. But on the other hand, it is stated by the “EPA that new radiation highs are found in Little Rock Milk, Philadelphia Drinking Water.” “Milk from Little Rock and drinking water from Philadelphia contained the highest levels of Iodine-131 from Japan yet detected by the Environmental Protection Agency, according to data released by EPA Saturday.” In reading the article and doing the math, Arkansas milk was 300% above EPA’s maximum contaminant level for radioactive iodine-131 and that was 11 days ago.

That doesn’t sound negligible to me. So what the governments are saying is that radiation exists, they need to evacuate, some populations are at higher risk, and in Japan AND the US, don’t drink the water or eat the food. But it’s negligible and nothing to worry about.

I would really love to be able to trust my government again, but unfortunately I cannot. However, I offer a trade that is even better: we can trust Jesus. He will never lie. He will never hide data that is important to our well-being. He will always keep us safe (spiritually). He will always be trustworthy.

“The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.” (2 Samuel 22:3) You can’t do better than that! In these troubled times, with everything either falling down or prices going sky high, Jesus is attainable. He is within reach. As a matter of fact, He is reaching for you now. If you have let yourself become distant from Him, hasten back to His side, He will cover you with His wing and shield you from hopelessness. If you do not know Him, once you confess your sins and trust in Him, you will feel peace and understand that no matter what is happening in external circumstances, you will remain solidly under the watchful eye of our God of the universe. That is the best place to be!

Fukushima update, and exhortation to listen to the Spirit

This is a well-founded and interesting update on Fukushima nuclear plant situation by Arnie Gundersen, Nuclear Physicist, of Faire Winds Associates. Gundersen is an energy adviser with 39-years of nuclear power engineering experience and a former nuclear industry senior vice president. Immediately upon listening to his update, you discern he is knowledgeable. The information is delivered in a way laymen can understand. Please view this 7-minute video to absorb the import of the information, then we’ll take a look at Revelation 6 and 8.

I had planned to post a hilarious essay on Peter and Rhoda in the situation that occurred after the angel delivered Peter from jail, as a lighter fare, and I’ll still do that later today. But the times are dark, that is a fact, but we who are in the Light will never fear the dark! The purpose of this post is not only to deliver information to you that the mainstream does not cover, but that hopefully the information transforms us into prayer warriors for the lost, sick, and dying; and diligent seekers of His word. Are we falling to our knees in appeals to the Holy Spirit?  The Lord put us here for a time such as this, let us not close our eyes nor wander away from being all that he intended us to be. It is precisely because things are so dark that we need to be the Light! Exhibit peace, pray for the Japanese, and stand on His word, always.

As was stated in the video, they had never anticipated that the fuel pool would burn as it seems to be doing in Fukushima. A previous study done by Brookhaven found that IF a fuel pool were to burn, that there would be as a consequence 137,000 fatalities from lung cancer. Let that sink in for a moment.

On March 11 when the Japan earthquake and tsunami happened, and the nuclear plant was destroyed, I wrote on Twitter: “FOUR Japanese reactors now lost ability to cool. Major emergency in Fukishima prefecture. Wondering Rev 6:7 plague maybe radiation poisoning.” Little did I know then that the radiation would still be outpouring perhaps dooming large segments of the population. It’s a legitimate speculation. Revelation 6 depicts several methods of prophesied death, one of which is worldwide plague. A quarter of the world dies. Things get even more specific in the Third Trumpet Judgment. Revelation 8:10-11 says:

“The third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of waters. The name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter.”

Most people have taken this to mean literally a star, asteroid or meteor, a solid heavenly body. But if you see the same word’s use in other verses it becomes obvious that it probably a is a metaphor to be taken figuratively.

The word in Greek is aster, and this same word is used in Matthew to describe the star that led the Wise men to he babe in the manger, it is used in Revelation 22:16 where Jesus compares Himself to the Bright and Morning Star, and in 1 Corinthians 15:41 where Paul is explaining that the saints in heaven will differ from one another in glory and splendor as the stars and sun and moon differ from one another in brightness.

There are other uses for the word star in the bible, halal, kokab, phósphoros, planḗtēs etc.But it is this word aster that can be used both literally and figuratively.

Further, if Wormwood is actually a solid heavenly body, take note that it falls on a third of the rivers and a third of the springs. Would an asteroid be able to split up and fall on only and exactly the springs and rivers and on nothing else? God can do anything, so of course it is possible, but tied in with the figurative use of the word aster above I think it an unlikely interpretation.

As a side note, compare the reverse situation in Exodus 15:22-25:
“So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” So he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a tree. When he cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet.”

It is not out of the realm of possibility that the poison infecting the rivers and springs (which come from underground) could be radiation contamination. The information Gundersen delivers about the unknown leak under the trenches spreading unrestricted into the ocean is sobering. If it is leaking into the ocean then it’s likely it is also leaking under the ground to the groundwater table. This article explains the dangers of this happening, since Fukushima sits so close to the water table.

It is a speculation but with all that we now know that is going on in the air and under the sea at Fukushima, and the fact that the Japanese officials have now officially abandoned attempts to stop it, and will entomb it in concrete instead, tells us that the time prophesied of devastation from ecology destruction could be near to beginning.

We need to pray. The Japanese officials have put the Japanese people in deadly danger, and many are knowingly or unknowingly infected. Also, we can donate to the Red Cross. Donations have already surpassed 120M, praise to the generous souls who give sacrificially! Do you feel a burden to go there? To join the missionaries, or to start a missionary trip though your church? It is not outside the realm of possibility that some few reading this already feel that burden. Jesus said “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” For others, you may be feeling a conviction to do something that I haven’t described but was uniquely delivered at the prompting of the Holy Spirit. There is a lot we can do and we should get busy doing it. Our first priority is a close walk with Jesus so that we will ‘have an ear to hear’ when He calls!

Facts and prophetic implications of Fukushima meltdown

The situation in Japan is truly critical. Here is some context and some news, with my interpretation of the end time implications at the end. Believe it or not, I have edited this down from a longer length. But it is a good roundup of the latest and most pertinent facts I could find. I apologize if it is too long.

ABOUT THE REACTOR FACILITIES:

The Fukushima 1 Nuclear Power Plant, also known as Fukushima Dai-ichi (dai-ichi means “number one”), is a nuclear power plant located on a 860-acre site in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. There are six nuclear reactors on site, known as Fukushima-1, Fukushima-2, etc. The plant reactors came online from 1970 through 1979.

Fukushima II Nuclear Power Plant, Fukushima Dai-Ni (dai-ni means “number two”), is a nuclear power plant located on a 370-acre site located 7 miles to the south of Fukushima Dai-chi. There are four reactors at the second Fukushima, which all came online between 1981-1986. After the 2011 Tokyo earthquake and tsunami, the four reactors at Fukushima II automatically shut down without incident.

The situation has been difficult for media to get a handle on because it is a major disaster after all, and things are very fluid. At one point, readings were published that indicated radiation was 10 million times normal but there were extra zeroes in the report that went uncorrected for hours. The radiation was actually 100,000 times normal, which of course, is bad enough. No mother with a baby is going to care how many zeroes are on the report when her child comes down with cancer. But the situation has been hard to get a handle on also because of government’s hiding information and disinformation.

COMPARISON TO THREE MILE ISLAND

Four days ago, we heard from the Japanese Prime Minister that there was a breach at Fukushima-3 and that the situation is in his words, “grave and serious.” An American nuclear scientist, Michio Kaku, was asked for comment /reaction to the news. He said:

“This is huge. For the first time they are using that dreaded word ‘breach’, meaning uncontrolled release of radiation in the environment. This reactor contains plutonium, the most toxic chemical known to science. A millionth of a gram of plutonium can cause cancer if ingested.” 

Dr. Kaku explained that the accident at Three Mile Island rated a five in the nuclear accident scale, because one reactor sustained 90% core damage, but very little radiation escaped into the environment. To compare Fukushima, the officials have rated as a level five on the nuclear accident scale. Dr Kaku said there are three raging meltdowns in progress, one spent fuel pond open to the air, hydrogen as explosions, any ONE of which exceeds Three Mile Island. “At the very least, Fukushima should by now be rated a six,” Dr Kaku said. Chernobyl was rated the highest, a seven on the nuclear accident scale.

But we are really parsing here when talking ‘partial meltdown’ and ‘full-scale meltdown’ when it comes to the Japanese people and the toxicity released into the global environment. There are reports on the ground from lay-people posting to Youtube that the situation is out of control, that plutonium has already been released in the air. What is the latest mainstream, credible news?

LATEST NEWS ON RADIATION SPREAD

China rejects ship from California with “abnormal” radiation — Had only been in Tokyo for a few hours
“Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has not yet decided what it will do with its container ship when it returns to Japan this week, a company official said on Tuesday, after China rejected the vessel for “abnormal” radiation levels. …  Chinese authorities detected a maximum of 3.5 microsieverts per hour on MOL’s ship when it arrived at the port of Xiamen in eastern Fujian province last week, the company spokeswoman said. …  The MOL Presence originated in California, stopping in Tokyo for only a few hours on March 17 before arriving in China four days later, port authorities said.”

Japan on ‘Maximum Alert’ as Workers Try to Stem Leaks of Toxic Water
Trace amounts of plutonium found in the soil

Whether the writer was deliberately attempting to diminish anxiety by using the word “trace amounts” or was accurately using it, it doesn’t matter. Remember what the nuclear scientist said above, a millionth of a gram of plutonium will cause cancer. And the situation is worsening, not getting better. Radiation contamination has already leaked out into Japan, the ocean, and in the world.

Singapore finds radioactivity in imported Japan vegetables
“Singapore said on Thursday its authorities had found low levels of radioactive contaminants in four samples of vegetables imported from Japan. It said samples of wild parsley, rapeseed plant, mustard and perilla leaf were found to have elevated levels of radiation, although an adult would have to consume 3.5 kg (7.7 lb) of these vegetables to receive a similar amount of radiation as one X-ray.  The contaminated samples were imported from the affected prefectures of Tochigi and Ibaraki, as well as Chiba and Ehime which are outside the affected areas.”

Radiation in seawater may be spreading in Japan
“Workers at Japan’s damaged nuclear plant raced to pump out contaminated water suspected of sending radioactivity levels soaring as officials warned Monday that radiation seeping from the complex was spreading to seawater and soil.”

Dr Tom Burnett is a Ph.D, retired nuclear physicist. He says : When the Fukushima Meltdown Hits Groundwater
“Fukushima is going to dwarf Chernobyl. The Japanese government has had a level 7 nuclear disaster going for almost a week but won’t admit it.  The disaster is occurring the opposite way than Chernobyl, which exploded and stopped the reaction. At Fukushima, the reactions are getting worse. I suspect three nuclear piles are in meltdown and we will probably get some of it.  If reactor 3 is in meltdown,  the concrete under the containment looks like lava. But Fukushima is not far off the water table. When that molten mass of self-sustaining nuclear material gets to the water table it won’t simply cool down. It will explode – not a nuclear explosion, but probably enough to involve the rest of the reactors and fuel rods at the facility.”

According to USA Today, published this morning,
Trace amounts of radiation have already been detected in 15 United States.

So we see the issues. The Japanese PM admitted the situation is grave and serious, and today the Embassies ready iodide tablets
“Various embassies in Japan are passing out potassium iodide tablets as a “precautionary measure” to protect their citizens from radiation exposure in case the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant goes haywire.  The central government, on the other hand, is only dispensing iodide tablets to people in the 20-km evacuation zone near the plant but is ready to distribute more to local residents outside the area.”

The radiation is in the plants. It is in the air. It is in the seawater. It is almost in and likely going to be in the groundwater. So what are the prophetic implications?

PROPHETIC IMPLICATIONS

In 1993 John MacArthur preached about “Divine Destruction of Earth’s Ecology,” as depicted in Revelation. He said:

“Man worships Mother Nature, the earth. Man has failed to honor God, failed to recognize God, gives God no thanks, gives God no place, rejects His manifest glory in the creation and worships the creature and the creation, rather than the Creator. That preoccupation with Mother Nature, that environmental atheism, that evolutionist that says God is in everything and everything is God, that kind of atheism that says man is no more valuable than a frog, or a rat or a rock. Three quarters of a million people were in the last New York Central Park Earth Day worshiping the earth, the creation instead of the Creator.”

In Revelation 6:8 we read: “I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hades was following with him Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth.”

In Revelation 8:11 we read: “And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.”

Wormwood is a poison.

“MacArthur again, “The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah was allowed to see as God gave him a vision of future judgment. Jeremiah chapter 9, “The Lord said, `Because they have forsaken My law which I set before them and not obeyed My voice or walked according to it, but have walked after the stubbornness of their heart and after the Baals as their father taught them, therefore thus says the Lord of host, the God of Israel, Behold, I will feed them, this people, with wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink.” And here he’s talking about judgment on Israel but it’s a preview of what’s going to happen in the end. All of this just to point out that wormwood refers to something bitter, some poison that is actually deadly. Whatever this poison is, it is lethal. A third of the waters become wormwood, it says in verse 11. And as a result, many men died from the waters because they were made poisonous. The rivers still run but they run with deadly poison. The wells are full but they’re full of death. The lakes are rippling with lethal quenches.”

Is that Wormwood/poison actually radiation? It is not beyond the realm of possibility. One can see by the rapid spread of the radiation already in the last two weeks how much poison may permeate the waters by the time Rev 6 and 8 rolls around.

I don’t know, I really don’t know what will happen at Fukushima or if it is related to prophecy. All I know is what the bible tells us what will happen. If the radiation situation gets under control that would be a mighty miracle and a relief, and I do hope that is what happens. If it does, it still doesn’t alter the fact that the world will become poison fairly soon, that Divine Judgment will render on the ecology and environment, and the scare we are seeing today will pale in comparison to the actual judgment.

Please imagine the agony Japanese mothers are undergoing at this moment. They hear their thirsty baby cry for water and looking at the tap, which may or may not be an enemy by now. What does she do? She needs to cook dinner and the stores are out of bottled water, and she knows that she only has three choices: pack up and leave her home for good, wait to feed her hungry kids for no one knows how long, or feed them and hope that what you are giving them isn’t deadly. How terrible! Pray for these people!

Jesus will give us strength to endure through these times of overwhelming misery. The way to do that is to-

1. Know what you believe and why you believe it
2. Have a thankful heart. We receive many blessings daily, count them!
3. Walk closely with Him by staying in the Word, praying, and assembling with the Saints. If you are not in a good, bible believing church where the Word is preached unadulterated, then find one, or start one by meeting with a few fellow believers. Paul and Priscilla and Aquila met in their home with a few believers, so did all the first church believers and most churches around the world still meet that way today. We need each other and the people of Japan need our prayers!
