The television program The Chosen has swept the religious channels and entered the hearts of many. It did so for a lot of reasons. It’s well written. It’s emotional. It’s extremely well made. It [seemingly] presents Jesus in a biblical light and fills in blanks plausibly without being heretical. I enjoyed the first season and said so, offering a few caveats.
As more information came out about the main actor who portrayed Jesus, and its writer Dallas Jenkins, I decided not to watch season 2 or any further seasons. By calling Mormons his brothers, Jenkins has diminished the severity of the Mormon’s lost state, dismissing the wide divide between the two, Christianity being true and Mormonism being false. He also was soft on whether Catholics are saved. He hired Mormons and Catholics to serve on The Chosen’s religious accuracy board and in the production crew. That’s like getting a fox to guard the henhouse and hiring satan as fact checker.
The actor who played Jesus is Jonathan Roumie. He is Catholic. Jenkins identifies as a Baptist-raised evangelical Christian, and could have used this opportunity to witness to Roumie. Jenkins did not. In fact, he accompanied Roumie on Roumie’s trip to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis. Roumie tearfully gushed it was a childhood dream come true to meet the Pope. Jenkins’ takeaway on his Pope visit was more pragmatic, offering to the camera that it shows how far his television show has come, and secondly, that ‘the walls are coming down’ [between Protestant and Catholic.] See the men say so in their own words below. My heart mourned as Roumie teared up in awe of meeting the Pope. I mourned as Jenkins called Catholics his brothers and was happy the walls were coming down between them.
Should the walls between Catholic and Protestant come down? Of course not. Protestant means protest. Martin Luther and others protested the Catholic Church’s misrepresentation of the basic tenets of the faith, particularly regarding justification by faith alone. Walls keep us safe inside. Walls keep predators out.
See this article from John MacArthur on exactly why the walls should remain up. Failing to witness to people who need it is one of the saddest things in the universe. Not knowing who the mission field is, is another.

When we read novels, watch movies, or tv, we always are bumping up against actors or authors who aren’t saved. They are all around, we’re in the world and that is to be expected. But it’s one thing to read an Ernest Hemingway book knowing Ernest wasn’t saved, and another to watch a TV program that purports to present the true Jesus, but doesn’t. When it’s actually is mixing in false ideologies with the true and passing them off as the real deal. We cannot accept it. Jenkins should know better. It’s sad he either doesn’t … or does but ignores the truth.
And poor Roumie…in awe over a man who is a type of antichrist- according to 1 John 4:3.
and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and now it is already in the world. (1 John 4:3).

The lost are all around us. They come in different flavors, shapes, sizes. The Mormon who speaks well of Jesus…the Pope who claims to love Jesus…the Catholic who kisses the Pope’s ring, even perhaps the professing evangelical who denies the exclusivity of Christ’s doctrines. Do not be deceived. And if you choose to continue to watch The Chosen, be aware of any creeping-in heresies and false ideas the people writing the script insert into the program. Deception is never overt, it masquerades and tickles.

As The Chosen became more and more popular, Jenkins was interviewed many times, and each time he let out more of his views on Mormonism and Catholicism. He even encountered some questions and then increasing push back but doubled down on LDS and RCC being brothers serving the same Jesus we do. Then, the trip to the Vatican. Ugh. What a same!

“Christianity being true and Mormonism being false.” It’s”G-d is true.” In the name of “Christianity” which is a culture that is not always biblical and can fail to produce good fruit terrible things have been done to there own people and outsiders.

Christianity can be seen as a culture but it is a religion and a relationship with Jesus. Sinners are in Christianity, forgiven by God but still sin sometimes. Yes terrible things have been done by sinners, it’s why Jesus Came, to break the hold that sin has on us and give us His Spirit to aid us in resisting sin.
